1. The first slave ships were brought by the Portuguese Martim Afonso de Sousa in 1532. The official account estimates that between that date and 1850, something like 5 million black slaves entered Brazil. However, some historians estimate that there could have been twice that number.

2. The slave ships that brought slaves from Africa to Brazil were called “tumbeiros” due to the death of thousands of Africans during the crossing. These deaths were due to abuse suffered by slaves, the poor hygienic conditions and diseases caused by lack of vitamins as in the case of scurvy.

3. It is possible to trace the origin of slaves into three groups: those from modern day Sudan in which the Yoruba, also called nagôs, dominate the region and those who came from the northern tribes of Nigeria, mostly Muslims, called malês or alufás , and the group of the Bantus, captured in the Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique.

Is not the theme of the topic but taking advantage of the fact that the topic is about Brazil, I would like to clarify some wrong stereotypes that Nigerians have about Brazil. Not all Nigerians have these wrong misconceptions but some of them have

1) Brazilians speak Yoruba
Yoruba is a common language in African Brazilian religion candomblé. But candomblé is a minority religion in Brazil. Only 3% of Brazil population practiced candomblé. Definitely few Brazilians speak Yoruba

2) Brazilians are Hispanic
Brazilians are considered latino but not Hispanic. Hispanics are people who born in Latin American countries who speak Spanish. Brazilians are considered latino

3) Black Brazilians are treated like Animals
Black Brazilians are the poorest ethnic group in Brazil but that is a such exaggeration. Brazil is a racist country but definitely is not the racist country in the world.

4) Brazil is a completely shithole
Brazil is a not entirely shithole but is not a paradise. Is a average third world country
Some places are more developed than any countries in África. Some places are poor like many countries in África.

5) I don't think that Nigerians have this misconception but some people have. Not all Brazilians are black or have African descent. Exist a lot of white Brazilians, Brazilians with light skin, Brazilians with blue eyes, blonde Brazilians, Asian Brazilians, Arab Brazilians the country are a melting spot of races

That is not true. That is fake news. getting a job in Brazil depends on your contacts. If you know a parent, a friend or a powerful politician who work in the company they indicate you and you are hired. Everyone takes advantage of this corrupt and nepotic system. Whites and blacks

you are right sunny, in Brazil you don't see Black newscasters on TV, you don't see black models on bill boards, you don't see black people working in banks, there are very few black students in universities in brazil, the only place where there is black dominance in Brazil is their football team same with Colombia.

abeg leave that man jare, 90% of blacks in Brazil lives in the favela, the famous black Brazilian players you see today are from the favela, Romario, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Adair, Ramirez, fernandinho. Brazilian society is being classified according to racial and physical features.

The whites enjoy all benefits of being at the highest class, followed by the caboclos (mixture of white and south American Indians) then mullatos (mixture of black and white) the ones we call half cast in Nigeria. Blacks and Zambos( zambo is a mixture of black and south American Indians) occupies the lowest class and suffer all form of racism.
