Damn! That's one of the things I fear most. |
Re: Keep Safe Distance: Just Witnessed A Ghastly Accident by Piyke: 7:15pm On Dec 18, 2021 |
I was cruising at 80 - 100km/hr on the inside right of a trailer. The trailer was about 5-car lengths in front, on the middle lane. Suddenly, by the corner of my eye, I caught what looked like a car zap by my left on the lane closest to the median barrier. Nothing happened immediately until about 5 seconds later.. 2 Likes |

Re: Keep Safe Distance: Just Witnessed A Ghastly Accident by Piyke: 7:26pm On Dec 18, 2021 |
Piyke: Next the trailer did a sudden swerve coming into my lane. Instinctively, eyes looked in the rear mirror, thankfully car behind kept a safe distance. I did too from the trailer. I applied the brake, when simultaneously the sound of screeching tires filled the air. It was then it became clear. The trailer was manoeuvring to avoid the car to its left that had lost control. |

Piyke: What type of car do you drive? |
Re: Keep Safe Distance: Just Witnessed A Ghastly Accident by Piyke: 7:40pm On Dec 18, 2021 |
Then the troubled SUV emerged in front of me. It was a 2005 (or similar year) Toyota Land Cruiser. It had done a 270 degree spin, swerved across the middle lane, which the trailer was on, and was now moving with its rear across my own lane towards the service lane. It entered rear first into the gutter separating the main express way from the service lane. Both rear tires ruptured from the impact with the edge of the gutter. Due to its speed, it continued out of the gutter, went across the service lane and finally came to rest by the road kerbs. I held my breath while all this happened. BTW I had cleared off the road and parked. 1 Like |

Immediately, people started racing out of the car as if it was going to explode. It looked like a family returning from a wedding. 4 guys in Asoebi, plus an older woman who was now sitting in shock by the side walk. The guys were hugging each other, and I could imagine, thanking God. I didn't observe any injuries. The lesson here. Let's keep a safe distance from other cars while driving... This could have easily become a pile up of some sort. After observing no immediate help was required, as per injuries, I turned on my left-turn signal, merged back onto the highway and left. Lavisha: There was really no need for your statement, the close call wasn't about the vehicle he was driving but the etiquette of the driver. And stop calling what other people can afford to drive toys they worked hard to enable them afford it. 16 Likes 1 Share |

Speed kills. One needs to reiterate this well. I'm glad they weren't hurt. I have a stupid friend that does 90-130 km/hr on that road anytime he's coming back from work at night. His excuse is that the roads are wide and free. Drives a 2014/15 Honda. The car moves very fast too. He doesn't hear word, I hope the car won't take him one day. I'll show him this post when he comes back tonight. 3 Likes |

SportsHD: 90-130km/hr at night on a free road isn't too much.. As long as your car has good handling, you're good! Don't forget some crashed going 60-80km/hr. Just hope you always return home every day! 7 Likes 1 Share |

Same Airport road wey I dey blow 170km/hr regularly..these v6 engines are built to be pushed..and that road is practically the only road where I can give her some kind of latitude to show what she's got ... Once did 210 on that road and everything just went quiet...it was as if my car was floating on clouds...it was that dangerous quiet that brought my senses back..quiet wey be like say my dead ancestors don dey observe one minute silence for their incoming son ... .That road is the closest thing in Nigeria to an Autobahn ....That road dares you to finish yourself Op couldn't have said it any better tho... maintaining a safe distance while driving is key... Although I kinda feel that Land Cruiser suffered a tyre mishap which led to the skid ....since the narrative didn't state that it was rear-ended or T-boned by another vehicle 13 Likes |

Piyke: Thank God it all ended with no life lost and no injuries that caused one to be maimed or permanently confined to a wheel chair. The rate at which Nigerians drive recklessly leaves much to imagine. It's a lesson for us all who's just read this post. We need to be more alert, much more sober and extra careful when behind the wheels. Thanks brother, seasons greetings. 2 Likes |
