I studied statistics
Do you think I should go for the Data science or stick to cyber security?

Ethical hacking

My brother studied Chemical engineering but what's feeding him today is programming. He's working for a top firm in Lagos as a programmer. Mind you, he learnt these skills online via YouTube.

I studied mathematics and I've been teaching ever since. Though I got a job in the bank as a customer care representative but I had to quit because I couldn't fake and smile unnecessarily. I told my bro I wanna learn programming and he encouraged me to go for data science, data mining and not web development. His reason was that, data science/mining is related to my field and that I'll learn faster.

I've been lazy in the data science stuff because I kind of enjoy teaching and the pay is not that bad. However, I'll be starting my data classes next year.

On your matter, statistics and maths are very related. In fact, it may be argued that you have the advantage as a statistician.

I'll encourage you to go for it. I'm going for it too, I just don't know how I'm gonna combine my teaching, masters program and data science classes.

I wish you good luck on your data science journey!!!

I just need a good laptop now

That is my top priority for 2022

For learning Data wrangling on Excel and GoogleSheets, OKAY
For basic coding on Python, Okay

Many Python libraries won't load, neither will Power Bi or Tableau public run efficiently on that laptop spec so make your conclusions.

I am currently a PhD student in data mining. I once took a course on data science and I agree with you, data science is all about visualization. We once had a 4 hour lecture on making graphs look beautiful. Continue the good work...

I am interested in a PhD in a data related field.

How can i contact you please??

In data mining, most times we talk about the good news and very few times we talk about some bad news. Today, I'm making a small exception and working on information which brings some bad news. When we work on information like this, the idea is to prepare the concerned authorities to take actions which should maximize safety. So, this kind of work has its own objectives.

Though this year witnessed a crash of a military jet in the Northern part of the country, there hasn't been a crash of a commercial airliner in Nigeria for quite a while. Nevertheless, Nigeria appears a little notorious for some of its lax aviation safety procedures. Just today, there was a close shave with a Max Airline craft as reported in the news. But how likely is it that we could see another crash soon in Nigeria?

I looked at the data and tried to answer this. The time between events is sometimes modeled using an exponential distribution. I collected data from past airline crashes in Nigeria and was able to confirm this (Image 1). The curve is not so steep, but is exponential and confirms that property of duration between successive events. Using likelihood theory, one can arrive at a mean estimate for the parameter of the exponential distribution and then go from there. Here, the mean estimate is 782 days. This means, on average, the time between two crashes in Nigeria is a little over two years. Next, we arrive at a cumulative distribution using this parameter and then try to calculate the probability that there could be a plane crash after 1500 days from the last one which was on 21st May 2021 when a military jet crashed in Kaduna. The probability turns out to be quite high, about 0.85, i.e. 85% chance we will see another plane crash inside 1500 days or in 4 years (Image 2). How about in 500 days? A little less than a year and half? That turns out to be about 50/50. So, at least, given the data, the chances are quite high that we may see a plane crash in Nigeria before September next year.

Anyways, these are just random musings which have not taken into consideration external factors such as the improvement of aviation safety in the country since 2012 when we had the Dana crash, nor have I taken into consideration other factors such as the volume of flights in the country since airplanes started taking off. Still, it does look like reasonable analysis which authorities may want to pay attention to to help plan for eventualities.

Source of data is planecrashinfo

Hello Folks,

Please I need your inputs .
I'm planning to enroll for a 6 months Data Science training with NIIT in Lagos...Costs 350k.. I'll be learning SQL, R mining, python.

Please I need your reviews on NIIT, are they worth it?? For those who has got any experience with them.
OR, if you can suggest an alternative tuition providers that are better.

I'll be expecting your inputs.

Thanks
