How Do I Get My Zeal Back?? by Supreme145(m): 11:39am On Dec 27, 2021
Recently I've observed my motivation levels as regards to coding has dropped drastically, I went almost two weeks without coding due to power outage and I could recall how restless and wasteful I felt not coding all those days. Light has been restored for some days now but I'm beginning to feel lazy, the numerous reject mails I wake up to each morning has left me dejected and wondering if I'm on the right path.

I'm currently trashing out my react skills and applying for internship and entry level positions both paid and unpaid without success. Normally at my level I should be focused on upgrading my skills and practicing more but for someone that has bills to pay, the need for a job has overridden every other interest.

Depression is setting in and I'm struggling to get my motivation back, Its been days since I opened my VS code which very unlike me, I feel I'm wasting away but I still can't find that zeal to code.

Has anyone been in this kind of situation before How do I get my motivation back??

You have to remember why you began coding in the first place. Remember the joy you felt when you learnt something new, the excitement you felt when you decided to go into data science and use that as your motivation to keep going.

I know it's hard, but If you remain depressed you're going to lose both ways. Or if you don't feel coding is for you, you can leave it and do something you feel passionate about. That's the best advice I can give you.

Can you post some of your projects you are using to apply to jobs here. How does your CV look like? You can remove your name and post here. If you applying to jobs and you aren't even getting any interviews back then it's either your cv is very bad or your projects are very horrible. If you are getting interviews but aren't passing them then that's a different problem altogether.

yeah I can relate to this so well. You have bills to pay . Yet you need to learn. The two don’t work well, because of the lack of patience it entails.

Here was how I got out.
You have to specialize, yeah you heard me right. You need to cut down unnecessary stacks of languages and pick only a few you will work with. Spreading your time around too many stacks is one of the biggest form of unproductive setting and a system crafted to make you work so much with less achieved. So my brother gather yourself on just few stacks.

2. Start forgetting or worrying too much about theories and how you need to learn this and that about your chosen stacks. Focus on value delivery. The only way someone will pay you or give you an opportunity is when you can help them fix thing. So from now on start channeling your thought to “What is the smallest thing I possibly do for a person that would be of value with my current stack”. Soon enough you will realize that accumulating more knowledge ain’t the goal. Rather it is value delivery.

3. Do only one thing at a time. For the moment now just start doing and learning about one concept of your stack once at a time. The logic is start learning the most likely value you would be asked of at your level now. So in other words note down future idea, don’t jump into them until they start cropping up or when you’re chanced. Focus 70% of your time on things needed at the moment.

Finally and the most important of everything above. Get depth please. You need to learn some part of your stack beyond the beginner level. You need to start exploring codebase of bigger project of your stacks and explore how advance dev make use of them. People who do not have deep knowledge of their stack would never get the better offer.

In summary, focus, do one thing at a time and find a little depth.

This is my portfolio website https://siemtech.netlify.app
I also came across a post on reddit about lack of getting interviews and most of them pointed to a bad CV too, I took a critical look at my CV and felt it might be the problem. It's in a PDF format so I don't really know how to share it here.

Your projects are horrible. I like the ideas behind them but the presentation is horrible. Movie site was copied From YouTube. Very horrible CSS. Mistakes on others. Overflows, insufficient paddings, horrible font colour combination sizes et al. Find a good template online and use that to remake your sites. This won't do well against the competition at all. Yinkakun.co is the portfolio of a new developer we recently hired. Go through that and see. He's also a junior developer too coding to less than a year.

This overflow issue. Does it mean the extra space that is seen when you drag or swipe the pages from left to right?

i made a post here on nairaland as someone with experience teaching and consulting with white people on programming that front end is a bit saturated. These guys learn front end back end web dev right from primary school. In the University people doing coding are up to 500 in one stream per university. If you get a front end job know that God smiled on you because a lot of people are into it. However, never give up. Keep on applying. I hope you have portfolios?

To get your zeal back why don't you code an idea....An idea that could be such a breakthrough for humanity and posterity that owning it's code and Intellectual Property could increase your intrinsic value to the society and your wallet in the long term..Coding for survival is the most painful and boring task one could ever undertake, if you are hungry with bills to pay tis best you go find a blue collar job like barbing, cat fish farming ,cab driving etc leave coding for those with full stomach and brains..
