So if an individual builds without DPC but was able to do a 'German gloor' before tiling the floor of the house, will the individual experience all the adverse effects you mentioned like earthworms and wet floors and walls?

don't get me wrong though, when we talk about DPC, it means standard German floor, but literally dpc is that barrier applied between reinforced concrete slab and the earth filling in the foundation to check water, if you do German floor without a dpc, you might be battling with moisture, not as much as the house without German floor, in some cases you may not have moisture issues at all.
For earthworms, not an issue for a house with German floor.
But in one thing again that will determine all this is the water table of the area.

Placed on?

I understand the part about not being on the floor.

But the bolded?

First of all, Concrete cover is essential to create a bond between concrete and steel, it also help steel against corrosion and harsh weather. It is simply the clear space between the surface of concrete and the reinforcement steel.

In this context, concrete cover is the space between the ground and the BRC wiremesh.

Wiremesh should be placed at the upper third of the oversite concrete (German floor), This will help fight against shrinkage/crack which originate from the slab top.

While concrete provide compressive strength, the wiremesh provides tensile strength.

The attached is the section of the strip foundation I uploaded previously, the dark straight line under the part labeled “150mm concrete floor slab” indicates the BRC wiremesh and position.

Pics 2: How to achieve concrete cover. Notice the red bricks (biscuit) placed underneath the wiremesh

I hope I answered your question sir

OK, now i understand clearly. I did DPC, which is the standard German floor that you referred to in a bungalow. But I noticed that ONLY the living room with a step down of about 18" has SLIGHT paint peeling from the wall. Please is the problem from the DPC or the step down?

I have also experienced that in a duplex I spent my early years in. It had DPC but paint peeling in only the room with a step down.

18 inches is 450mm for a step down thats much, or is it two steps? should be the dpc around the wall areas.
One thing again to be sure, when you check the ground level and the normal dpc level, that part you referred to as step down should be a step up, that is adding to the normal foundation height, but if it is a step down, it means that the living room part is very close to the earth filling, that also might be the problem, only inspection can verify the true cause.

are you guys trying to blame the QS or what!? I don’t get it..:

Brabus was paid over 97% of the total contract sum? Why don’t u question him as to where he didn’t buy and store materials at that time? What do you expect? You guys should at least pity the client. He did his part but brabus didn’t!!

And when they call him to come to the site for evaluation did he show up? No he didn’t.. claiming he was busy !!! You guys should learn how to ask the right questions

Yes, I usually step twice to reach the level ground.

OK, please, I am currently on a 2+3 bedroom bungalow and I did a step down on the 3 bedroom part, is there a standard level for stepdown? Hopefully i can still adjust at this stage.

And yes, after building to the level of roofing I did German floor NOT DPC but raised my foundation by 4 blocks from the ground. A dry area with no history of water logging or flooding. Do I have any reason to be worried about the wet walls, peeling paints and others?

Please NOTE that I asked the engineer to do DPC, the funds were available, but he said it wasn't necessary because of the area and the height of foundation.

DPC literally means German floor comrade. DPM is the barrier sir.

Yes the standard for a stair riser is 150mm, for each step, if it is too high, you can reduce it by filling it with cement and tiles

the thing here is a dry area can become wet during wet season, your German floor did not cut across your walls at the foundation level, now it means that it is the foundation wall that ran up to the roofing, therefore from the depth the wall started from the ground, there's a possibility that there will be a capillary rise of water up the walls, because your German did not cut across the walls.

Please NOTE that I asked the engineer to do DPC, the funds were available, but he said it wasn't necessary because of the area and the height of foundation
sincerely this moisture does not solely depend on the height of the foundation, think of the wall as a pipe taking petrol from a gallon, as long as the wall is in contact with the earth, deep inside the ground when the earth gets wet during dry season, the capillary rise of water will occur.

OK. Can there be any remedy for the 'capillary rise of water' at this stage? Is there a 'U-turn' at this stage to prevent rising damp or can a reversal or preventive measure be taken at this stage? Thank you.

I would recommend you put some decorative tiles up to that height where it peels, make it look like a decoration rather than a patch, but some people here suggested otherwise.
so i can't really say. I hope our bosses in the house can help you

As far as I know, your options are, but not limited to..

-making use of water-proof cement mix during plastering of the wall.
-making use of water proof paint from @gbadexy.
-tiling to conceal the dampness.
