Keep an eye on the business from time to time & work on your conversational skills, it is too rigid. Most times we focus more on the price than the value the domain name can bring to our buyers. Didn't see your full messages but I don't think he was that convinced, he might have bought it if you gave him a cheaper price range, again it's a start-up right? They might be lean on cash & won't want to splurge on a domain name that would be useless if they eventually folded up/too shortsighted to see the value of an emd now/or just bidding their time to see if you'll drop it.

So chat him up from time to time, ask him about the business, gain his trust. Or play the long game, find a way to develop the domain name, if you start gaining massive traffic, & the startup eventually blows, they might come knocking. It's a lot of work but the sales price won't be $800 anymore. Don't rest & wait for grace, start thinking like a business man. Put yourself in your buyers shoes.

Really, it's not that easy at all. But I always have self-motivating phrase in my mind while doing grunt tasks: "Begin and continue with the end in mind." I've done a lot of legitimate online businesses but nothing trumps blogging and selling your blog as an exit strategy. I'm in the mailing list of Side/Hustle/Nation/com and the day he sent me a mail of a website he sold for over $500million, I started re-strategizing.

There is too much money to be made online depending on what you love to do. I love domaining, affiliate marketing and blogging as a package. You can use it to travel the world over if you like. And you can outsource if you have fund to invest upfront.

You're right about the udrp, might be construed as trying to disrupt their business if he developed it along their line of business or anything similar.
Doesn't distract from the fact that It's still a brandable non trademarked name with multitude of uses. The onus is on the owner & his level of knowledge.

On the location issue.

Your Gmail is region-locked(not permanently though) & this location can be traced . There's is a chrome add-on for that. Think it's the same too with most online accounts.

VPN would only hide your location on websites using analytics & all that but it's the internet, you can always be traced.
