"The Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government Counci, Mukhtar Baloni has revived the local government legislative system and presented N4.7bn 2022 budget to the council" This annual budget of N4.7 billion is to small to move anyone out of poverty. And here is why: Kaduna North local government population is 364,575 (per 2021 census ). Now, N4.7 billion is $11, 280, 000 ( US dollar per Naira is .0024 as of today. What this means is that each citizen of Kaduna north local government will be living on $31 per year--translating into $2.58 per month. With $2.58 per month, you cannot buy clothes, pay rent, send kids to school, take family out on vacation. Consider this: Nigeria imports everything and export nothing except crude oil. Prices of imported items are too high for anyone to survive on $2.58 per month. No wonder why there are killings and kidnapping going all over the country. May God help us! 1 Like |

SoNature: I'm certain this should be the norm according to every constitution that has ever existed in Nigeria. The local government is the primary level of recognized governance in Nigeria, to which all the wards submit, they have constitutional responsibilities which both federal and state governments have usurped. For instance marriage, divorce, communal dispute, customary laws, kingship and chieftaincy is under LGAs according to our constitution but we know that's not the case in reality 2 Likes 1 Share |

ANDREW91: According to the constitution, the state assembly is to function as the local government assembly for all local government in the state. This is to reduce the cost of governance. Also to ensure people with relevant experience do the job. In fact, councilors were supposed to be the assembly in Local governments. However, it was observed that people elected councilors don't have the necessary experience to perform legislative work satisfactorily. That was why the state assembly was made to perform those functions. So, if we go back to each Local government having their legislative assembly, imagine the cost. And what will they do after passing the budget? Nothing more. Even the state assembly, how many laws do they make in a year? Do they perform any oversight function on state governors? |

ANDREW91:oga mi eh. Here are things we need to change; We don't need bicameral legislature. We don't need permanent legislators. They should be made to meet only when there's need for them. About 60% of our budget goes to loan servicing and recurrent expenses. It's not supposed to happen like that. How large is the states that the governors can't take care of the local governments. Some of the things we do is reserved for governments that are rich. We're not rich |
