Language is one of the biggest problems in this country. I don’t know why we speak too many languages in this country……CONFUSION One single language will have been better 1 Like |

Very correct. Of what use is teaching when there is little or no impartation just because of language and big vocabularies involved. If these subjects are taught in mother tongues, it will remove one major obstacle out of two. Students will then be left with understanding only the concept being taught. It will drastically reduce the time taken for actual learning to take place. |

It is rather unfortunate that the Bible and Quran were translated into various African languages but no book in science or engineering got translated into any native African language. The Chinese, Japanese, Russians and other Bon English speaking countries teach sciences and arts in their own language. It is about time we wake up. 1 Like 1 Share |

Annie001: What?! Mathematics useless? Capital no. The statement is too shallow bros/sis. Counting is the lowest, most basic part of mathematics. Next is simple addition, subtract, multiplication, division, etc. Mathematics is the next most important subject after Language. It is the language of science which has brought all of the advance technology that have made our world such a beautiful place to live to today. Without mathematics, the house you live in can not stand. What about invention of vehicles, guns, bulbs, determining the right proportion of chemicals in a drug, even fertilizers, manufacturing of farm machineries, war equipments, etc. I could deduce from your assertion that you have been dealing with only few data and you are not really doing much of analysis. When you start analysing your income/expenses, measuring actual efforts against results in projects, projecting/predicting/analysing payroll, when you get to do serious data analysis, then you will appreciate Mathematics. Mathematics is technology and technology is mathematics. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Nigeria is a country with so many ethnic groups and languages, so what language will WAEC, GCE, NECO and JAMB general mathematics use in setting the national examination for students in Nigeria? Will not be a chaos and cacofony or total confusion ? This Prof is playing with mass failure |

If you like use heavenly language who go fail maths go still fail. You can only have little provement. Even in England some parents are protesting against maths..saying their wards mustn't study maths in school. |

Lukgaf: Easier said, now when you make your explanation in the modern tongue, in what language will the students make their own explanations? Mother tongue or English? All I see is nothing but confusion |
Re: Sunday Kayode: Maths Should Be Taught In Nigerian Languages by OmegaAutos: 12:14pm On Jan 01, 2022 |
Lukgaf: Permit me to disagree with you a little. Why we are not excelling technologically isnt a problem of being taught in English rather the system itself. We run examination system where we are only judged by what we can remember/cram. School system to be changed to that which makes learners think, reflect and profer solutions to societal problems. I used to have a friend/class mate back then in FUTA, he was rock bottom of the class in terms of grades but we all know this guy is a genius, eventually the system frustrated him he went to India to study and came back doing wonderful things, too loaded to be employed by any company, he owns a company that install ricemill and so many other heavy industrial solutions, wrote several computer programs for FG and Ondo state. Untill we change this, nothing is gonna change. Even the kids you are suggesting should be taught in their mother tongues now find it easier to speak English more than their native language and that will bring more confusion. Lets clamour for a change of system 1 Like |

For my own public secondary school, I really love maths, but unfortunately we were not taught further maths and I paid for it in my 100 and 200 level in university. And it affected me career wise. Both maths and further maths should be introduced to all secondary schools in Nigeria. |

Re: Sunday Kayode: Maths Should Be Taught In Nigerian Languages by Lukgaf(m): 12:27pm On Jan 01, 2022 |
OmegaAutos: I partially agree with you sir. If we can explain the concept in our mother's tongue, then we are going to excel "excellently". Many students from rural areas are disadvantaged when it comes to understanding English. Many fails not because they do not understand the concept but because they do not know how to express themselves. Take, for example, sir, assuming you ask a kid (especially) those from the rural areas "what the uses of cutlass are"?, many of them might find it difficult to answer the question. But ask them in their mother's tongue, you will get a non-exhaustive list. |

Lukgaf: It can't work because of the diversity in terms of language. You say let everyone do it in his language........ how many classes will you have considering the population?? Can all exams happen without the use of a language barrier breaking language like English? Can the knowledge of the subject even be applied in the absence of a language barrier breaking language like English?? Every state in Nigeria requires a language barrier breaking language like English! |
