Magodo Brooks Residents Association has denied claims by the Lagos State Police Command that the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, was humiliated and denied entry into their estate.

Residents of the estate lamented that apart from arresting and detaining security guards, a widow and her children were also arrested and detained on the order of the CP.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, had in a statement noted that the CP didn’t lock down the estate, noting that he was stopped from entering the estate despite being accompanied by his armed security details, driven in his official car bearing an official number plate and a pennant, including all the paraphernalia of office.

But the estate, in press statement, said the security guards had no prior knowledge of the CP’s visit and were arrested in their bid to assist him with directions.

The statement read, “The Executives of MABRA will like to apologise to all residents who were delayed in the traffic jam caused by the social visit of the commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu on the 1st of January, 2022 to our estate,” the statement read.

“At about 6pm – Saturday evening, Odumosu entered our estate to attend a social event at the instance of one of our residents.

“It was quite a busy day in the estate yesterday as many residents had ongoing social events.

“The estate security operatives on duty, having not had prior knowledge of Mr. Odumosu’s visit and in a bid to assist him with directions to the house of his host, sought to ascertain the particular resident he was visiting.

“The commissioner interpreted this act as an insult on his person and ordered the immediate arrest of all the security operatives on duty even after gaining access into the Estate to attend the party.

“A resident who happens to be a widow that was passing by with her three children was also ordered to be arrested alongside her 3 children by the commissioner of police. Her offense was that she tried to intervene to understand the situation.

“The Executives, represented by the vice-chairman and the publicity secretary, after being briefed of the situation, proceeded to the party to apologise on behalf of the security operatives for any disrespect caused to the commissioner and plead for the release of the resident, her three children, and the security operatives. These pleas fell on deaf ears.

“At this point, the executives, members of the estate security committee, the estate CSO and some residents had converged at the estate gate to plead with the commissioner on his way out with the hope that his anger would have subsided after enjoying the party.

“To our amazement, the commissioner came down from the car on his way out, said he was insulted by our estate and further instructed that the remaining security operatives who replaced the arrested ones should also be arrested.

“This resulted in complete shutdown of the estate as no one could go in or come out as our estate gate is automated and the operatives with the access token were all arrested with the token. This further resulted in the traffic jam that occurred on CMD Road for over 4hrs.

“Pleas from different angles were made to the Commissioner with no yield until about 11 pm when he finally gave in. The estate was finally able to bail the security operatives who were already put in cell, the resident with her children who were put behind the counter at about 11:30pm.”

People get overly emotional and even hypocritical over this issue because a police officer is involved.

1. The Commissioner of Police Odumosu didn't need to give advance information of his coming to the Estate security men because it would be stupid to for him state his movement. Of course, giving such information would require the CP's security details to secure the Estate gate security until he arrives.

2. On arrival at the Estate gate and having PROPERLY identified himself as CP of Lagos State, he ought to have been allowed in immediately. Keeping him at the gate is unnecessarily exposing him to possible attack by criminals. Even a military formation would know better than keep a properly identified CP exposed to danger at its entry point.

3. CP Odumosu didn't need to tell the Estate security men the exact house he was going to before being allowed in. That's a classified information until his details secures the house for his safety.

4. Deliberately tagging the CP's visit as social to denigrate him is pure IGNORANCE because even a 'common' DPO is always listening to his radio equipment and giving directives anywhere he is. The fact is that when not on official leave, a CP is at work everywhere and every time.

5. I doubt if the police singled out that widow for arrest for nothing. She may have jumped into the matter and said unsavoury things. Being a resident in an Estate, I am familiar with some 'radical' busybody residents that would jump into issues without complete knowledge.

6. This is not the first gated estate that the CP has had cause to visit in Lagos. The truth is this incident was avoidable if only the Estate security was more professional and less power-conscious. Their unprofessional attitude activated power-tussle mode in the OFFICIAL state police force to show their constitutional superiority. The irony in this drama is that when armed criminals show up at the Estate, it is the official state police men that are called in to risk their lives.

7. By the way, is an estate which has individually-owned houses a private property or a community? If Magodo Brooks is NOT owned and rented out by one person as its private owner, is there any difference between this Estate and for example Ajegunle in the eyes of the law?

8. Yes, Nigeria police has many outright criminals as members but it is still the only one we have to enforce law and order and maintain security.

Who do we believe sef

..but then, what level of provocation can warrant a whole Commissioner of Police with his security operatives and orderly, to arrest entire security guards of an Estate

I cannot really phantom the audacity of those security guards to delay a Commissioner of Police, with all his security details at the gate for over 30mins as claimed by the police press release... it's really sounding somehow.

The nigerian police is a criminal organization ~ Canadian Judiciary.

Does that mean high ranking police officers like CP Odumosu are high ranking criminals?

Wisdom will never depart from you, how will a whole CP stay in traffic for such minutes if his details wouldn't have come down to harass everyone if he has stayed just 4mins not attended to.

Who are they deceiving with their press statement

I like the fact that you try to be objective but still your points are very biased and obviously trying to justify the police.

Firstly, you should know that hotel and estate security don't joke with unauthorized entry. They get sacked and can enter jail due to a resulting crime. Hotel security once prevented DSS from arresting Suleiman till Fayose came to intervene. That is stupid bravery though considering the power these agencies have officially and unofficially.

Secondly estate is shared private property not public ground as the police is claiming. Any policeman without a warrant as well as military officer not on official assignment has no right to enter anyone's private property without informing the owners. That's why the estate is making it clear that he came for a social function.

Lastly I know the estate too is lying by saying that they were assisting him. That's a big lie because that wouldn't lead to any arrest. The security men were likely preventing him because he did not disclose his intentions to them. But legally they're right.

So whether you look at it emotionally or objectively. The Policeman is very wrong here. Estate is private property not public space.

It is not a crime to prevent an officer without a warrant from entering a privately owned property when not in any official assignment or responding to crime. Know your rights.

If DSS has court-issued warrant and was stopped from making arrest, a criminal offence has been committed.

When that incident happened. Hotel security asked DSS what they came for. They were not told anything. If they had a warrant, they would simply show it. They didn't have one and it's not the first time. Wike also stopped them from arresting a Judge without warrant back then, when Buhari was going crazy.

Ask yourself, Can that AIG enter Aso villa uninvited simply because he is a high ranked officer? He would simply be arrested for intruding.

I don't need to be there in order for me to use my brain and not swallow hook, line and sinker, a press release from our 'friendly' police force. In traffic, even the ones that are attached to normal VIPs come down to harass road users to make way for their principal to pass and here our 'almighty ' lagos CP was kept at a gate for 30mins, with him and his details introducing themselves to private security guards. Yeye dey smell

Magodo Brooks Estate or whatever it is called is not a State within a State. It is no Vatican. Nigerian Police has absolute constitutional jurisdiction over it.

Most of these estates have become an island sadly

Some deny access to road users under the guise of securing their estates to the detriment of other people's lives (Isheri Magodo is a case in point)

Obviously you don't know the law. Jurisdiction is defined and regulated by the constitution of the republic and the police is only an agency of the federal government.

According to the law. Police and other law enforcement agencies do not have the right to intrude into a citizens private property without invitation except when there is a search warrant, arrest warrant or when responding to crime/emergency situation. That illegality is normal does not make it legal.

Mr CP came for a party and wants to barge in like it's a secret mission, without the owner of the house knowing? The security were in good legal standing to question him. The only "crime" they committed is stopping a big man from behaving like a big man.
