South African police have confirmed that a male suspect has been arrested for breaking glass windows and doors at the country's Constitutional Court (ConCourt) in Johannesburg. The iconic venue, which serves as the highest court in the land, was vandalised extensively on Wednesday.

The shock scenes come just days after Parliament in Cape Town was set alight, and a suspect arrested. The motivations behind this attack on ConCourt are yet to be established, but this incident has unfolded at a highly sensitive time for South Africa.

At first, it was believed that bullets were fired into the chambers. This has since been dismissed by law enforcement officials, and they have confirmed the assailant’s weapon of choice was actually a hammer. Thankfully, there are no human casualties to report at this time.

Police ended up firing a warning shot before arresting the perpetrator.

The Johannesburg-based courthouse serves as an indisputable symbol of South Africa’s democratic history. Judges Matter, a collection of legal experts in South Africa, have described the attack on ConCourt as ‘outrageous’ – and they are hoping a swift prosecution will follow the arrest:

“Although it’s not clear at this stage whether this relates to the release of the report of the Zondo Commission into State Capture (high level corruption during Jacob Zuma's presidency), it is nevertheless gravely worrying . Judges Matter condemns this outrageous attack on the Constitutional Court building as a symbol of our judiciary and constitutional democracy.”

Now that they've run out of foreigners' properties to burn, they've turned to their own national assets.
What do we call this now?
Indigenophobia?
Personaphobia?
Or nationaphobia?
Why are those people so bent on destroying things?

@TMKsouth,come make I dash you one room for Onitsha in case they decide to torch every house in South Africa.

On a more serious note, are you sure this is not because of the SA's government's decision to keep Zuma behind bars?

I think it's definitely Zuma related.

His supporters did say they will render the country ungovernable and attack state assets should he be returned to prison. Remember, there's a court order for his medical parole to be overturned which he is appealing.

Part of the State Capture report was also released on Tuesday. It was the commission that investigated corruption during his term as president. The man heading the commission is the deputy chief judge at the Constitutional Court. So...

Somehow we think we know who's behind this, but then again we're not too sure because the people being arrested don't fit the profile.

Checkout the guy who was arrested for setting parliament on fire:

The ANC's presidential election is also this year, Zuma must return to prison, and the axe is supposed to fall on Zuma and allies since the State Capture report will be acted upon in June.

So it's gonna be a tough year indeed sad

CONTEXT

State Capture Commission

After four years, 400 days of testimony, and over 300 witnesses, the State Capture Inquiry found that the South African state was captured.

The inquiry, officially known as the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State, is headed by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Zondo handed the first of three parts of its report to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday.

The first volume covers South African Airways (SAA), SA Revenue Service (SARS), government communications and public procurement in general, and in it the commission makes wide-ranging findings.

The inquiry made recommendations that criminal charges be instituted against key role players in state capture, including former SAA chairperson Dudu Myeni, former state logistics Transnet CEO Brian Molefe, former electricity generator Eskom CEO Collin Matjila and the India-born family the Guptas, among others.

Former president Jacob Zuma was also slammed by the commission, which said he had advanced the interests of the Guptas at the expense of the South African people
