Well, for me, Algeria would be a team to beat but i don't think their 'favorites' tag is absolute like some members here are putting it. I see teams from West Africa coming out strong in this AFCON.

Dad, Leave Morocco out of Chriskels' radar. If there is anyone you should asking about Morocco, na me. The Atlas Lions are my favorite African team in world football only behind the Super Eagles.

It's been so for a long while now.

Chriskels' specialty na CIV, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and even Guinea perhaps. grin

Sometimes I genuinely question if he's a fan of the SE. Every African football fan and his toddler knows that countries like Nigeria always stand a chance at these kinds of tournaments.

Historical in the last 13 AFCON's we have attended we got to the last 4 12 times winning a medal of any color every single no matter the quality of our squad.

It's not like we are going with an absolute squad of farmers and carpenters. Most of them with the right motivation and spirit can do something.

Are we outright favorites? No but underestimate us at your peril.

There's a reason why in world football people would still fancy the likes of Italy, Germany and Brazil to win the WC over a more talented Belgian side. Character and pedigree speaks a lot for a team.

andrewbaba44:

What past history are you talking about ?

I will even put naija 3rd up there

When last did Morocco or Senegal won the afcon ?

It is called Pedigree as a football nation. Same thing that makes a country like Italy win tournaments meanwhile teams like Holland, Belgium and England would be struggling from generation to generation.

On paper and current form teams like Senegal, Mali, Ivory coast, Ghana and Morocco might be ahead of Cameroon but I would rather put my money on Cameroon to win it. Not Just because they are the host but because they have proven from generation to generation that they have that tournament winning mentality. They have that Champions pedigree.
Senegal n algeria,
even as good as they r,
I would put my money on cameroon, nigeria and egypt
before any of senegal and algeria,
any time any day as far as afcon is concerned.

Even if they don't go on to win it this time around,
i will always tip these three countries to win the afcon irrespective of what anyone thinks or says here because they have proven it on many occasions.

Hey Chris, are you from Achara Layout? I grew up there, bro - Mkpofia/Amawbia axis grin

Wow, it’s a small world, yo.

O pari

I be Achara layout, through and through. I grew up adjacent St Paul's Catholic church, Off Igbariam and Mayor Junctions, precisely Nnajinwugwu street, the next street to Amah street where Chinedu Okoli(Flavour N'abania) also grew up. Me and others including Edu Malaga(Chisom Egbuchulam's younger brother), Obinja(Obinna Nwobo) who was a mass server then for All Saints Catholic church were ball boys when the likes of Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi, Flavour N'abania(ezigbote JB grin) and co were playing street football at St Paul's semi Sandy pitch.

Achara Layout get men oo!

Are you a Sempre, UNEC sec, Command, Federal, Union or Army Day old boy? grin

I agree that they are a team to beat, but I just don't rate them that highly
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2023, 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheSuperNerd(m): 12:53pm On Jan 08, 2022
They could falter if they come up against a team who will drag the middle game dynamics with them and frustrate them at their own game. Also, don't rule out some touch of luck.

I recall vividly how heavily Luck worked against Morocco at the last Afcon vs Benin Republic in the Round of 16. Hit the Post, missed big chances, missed even a penalty from Ziyech, and more. It just wasn't going well and eventually they caved in psychologically and the squirrels triumphed.

But like My Dad, Chief Icon4s has opined, this tournament could indeed go the way of a west African giant. West African teams are likely to rise strongest at this edition but notwithstanding, the Algerians are still good. Time will tell it all.

Hey guys! Am I the only one who doesn't rate Algeria against other top guns like Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco and Ivory Coast?

You really cannot discount what home support can do for you in a tournament like this.

In looking at teams I put aside emotive Favouritism and look at matters as objectively as possible.

I will start from one proviso, all Francophone teams have an advantage over all Anglophone teams. Cameroon like other Francophone countries have direct acces to the French League and that means a huge pool of talent.

But if we are to look at what gives you an advantage it's always quality players and to have 3 outstanding players through the spine of the team is a great advantage.

Onana Ajax goalkeeper alongside Mendy are probably the best African goalkeeper in the World. You can guarantee Cameroon defense will be birthed from French league one like Castelleto at Nantes to name a few. They also have Anguissa in Midfield NOBODY in our squad can compare to him Dude is very good. They have Ekambi from Lyon, Choupa Bayern M., Aboubakar and Basagog can't be ignored. In all depu they have strength in depth.

They are top favourites in my opinion to get to the Finals.

The SE played a local team from Cameroon
Coton Sport FC de Garouab we beat them 2-0 that's not an inspiring result whatever way you look at it.

Senegal have Mendy, Koulibally and Mane to name three top class if not world class players in their squad, I am sorry we are not better than them on paper.

Cote d'Ivoire are not very good in the goalkeeping department. We are better. But it ends their, defender are Éric Bailly , Willy Boly (Wolves) they are very good.

Midfield they have Kessie , Akpro, Bogarde to name a few. Upfront the top goal scorer in the Eredivisie Haller, who is flanked by Pepe and Zaha.

And you truly believe that we are better than Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire. On paper we are absolutely not.

However, it's football it's a cup competition anything can happen. I will admit that inexplicably for too many years Cote d'Ivoire have the players but never seem to achieve. Could this be the year they do

Nigeria is not a favourite in my opinion , maybe our never say never " Warri no deh carry last " Spirit may take us past the group stage, but winning it very doubtful.

Nonetheless, I'm screaming for Nigeria to win .

Home support has only worked for 2teams for the past 11Afcon Editions and those teams are North African teams(Egypt/Tunisia) this time around whether u be home team oh, if you jam team wey crase them go beat you in front of your president

I don’t want to say much ,he is not 28 years ,even musa with more caps that is having a successfully career for both club and country is even older than what he claimed to be grin

It’s not by playing for the eagles for 10 years that will make you determine the player is using his real age or not ,omeruo has played for 8 years for naija and it’s a normal thing to me as far as you are fit enough and playing weekly for your clubside ,if players like pepe Thiago Silva can still be playing for their national team at 38 39 then the African man with football age should have no problem still playing for his national team at 33 let alone 28 grin

Omeruo was one of those that used his real age at the 2009 U17 world cup, that's why he is still lasting and strong for about 13yrs now in the colors of Nigeria another real small boy spotted at the U17 world cup was chidera Eze, during the 2013 WC, e pain me that boy no translate into super eagles
Omeruo is one quiet personality in the eagles fold otherwise he should be a commanding captain in the eagles of today

This is not the time to say what we all know.

Omeruo claimed to be 15 in 2009 he has remained almost the same since then no change in facial skeletal development and or hieght. That year all of then were age cheats some even removing 10 years from their ages.

Fortune Chukwudi the captain comes to mind when confronted he said , but it's not only me . He was close to 30 claiming U17.

Go and look at pictures of Iwobi at 15, Yobo at 15, Aina at 15 , Ekong at 15, and stop saying what we already know.

Agreed but it's still a factor.

Sometimes it can be a two edged sword and the pressure to win so much you completely loose it . Remember Brasil in the World cup against Germany.
