Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are unique collectible crypto assets, have been around as early as 2012 when the concept of Bitcoin Colored Coins first emerged. These coins were simply satoshis – small fractions of a bitcoin – marked, or “colored in” with distinct information that could link the coins to real-world assets, such as “this satoshi represents $500 of John Doe’s New York office building.” For the most part, however, Colored Coins were used to create and trade artwork like “Rare Pepe” digital cards on Counterparty, a peer-to-peer trading platform built on top of Bitcoin’s blockchain.

These cartoon frog images adapted from a viral internet meme were some of the earliest examples of unique digital artwork tied to crypto tokens. This paved the way for the ideation and creation of new non-fungible token standards – a set of blockchain building blocks that allow developers to create their own NFTs.

NFTs can be used to represent virtually any type of real or intangible item, including:

Virtual items within video games such as skins, virtual currency, weapons and avatars

Collectibles (e.g. digital trading cards)
Tokenized real-world assets, from real estate and cars to racehorses and designer sneakers

NFTs are uniquely identifiable digital works of art; anything digitally created can potentially be sold as an NFT (including a Tweet). They are frequently associated with cryptocurrency because they must be created and maintained through blockchain database systems. Much like the cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Litecoin support their eponymous currencies, Ethereum supports Ether. Ethereum supports most NFTs which, like cryptocurrency, have long chains of code that uniquely identify and tether them to a single point of origin. A difference between an NFT and a cryptocurrency is that a non-fungible token cannot be substituted by another—it is truly unique, like a social security number or the original Mona Lisa. On the other hand, one Bitcoin can be traded for another—they are interchangeable. Hence the term “non-fungible” token.

Financial experts around the world are constantly adapting to the changing landscape of cryptocurrency. Expert or not, the question is, “Will cryptocurrency be economically sustainable?” The question that needs to follow this and, quite frankly, any innovation subsequently must be, “is it environmentally sustainable?”
One calculation suggests that the average NFT has a carbon footprint equal to more than a month’s electricity usage for a person living in the EU. The technology behind cryptocurrencies and thus, NFTs is hugely power hungry. Most cryptocurrencies are based on a system called “proof of work” (PoW). This PoW system requires that a certain amount of time and effort be exerted before being able to add another block to the chain. The reason this energy intensive system is required is because most cryptocurrencies are decentralized. There’s no server farm to manage the data; information is saved on a global network of individual computers, called “nodes,” and each node needs to undergo processes to be in compliance with the PoW system.

Before we get into creating and selling NFT art, we want to give you a brief refresher on blockchain technology. At its core, the blockchain is a distributed public ledger and a ledger is a fancy way of describing a database of transaction and/or item records.



Most don’t realize it, but there are lots of ledgers in the world that people have been using for decades without even realizing it. For example, banks have a private ledger of account balances. And if you’ve used a Visa or Mastercard, you’ve used a distributed private ledger. For access to Visa’s ledger using debit and credit cards, they charge businesses a ‘merchant fee’. The main difference between distributed private ledgers and distributed public ledgers like the Ethereum blockchain is that public ledgers don’t require a centralized trusted authority to verify transactions or the authenticity of goods in a person’s wallet.



The key benefit of decentralizing this authority is allowing creators and consumers to easily transact with each other. An artist creates art which is then signed with their wallet’s private signature to prove its authenticity. The signing is then recorded to the Ethereum blockchain. Then once someone buys the art, the buyer can verify the art’s authenticity using the public Ethereum blockchain.

One of the benefits of the Ethereum Blockchain is that it supports Smart Contracts. Smart Contracts allow parties to transact with each other without a centralized authority. Ethereum is the currency required to transact using smart contracts and it is required to create and buy NFTs. When you transact in Ethereum you pay a fee called the ‘gas’ fee which varies depending on Ethereum blockchain traffic. This gas fee goes towards miners who process the computations used to process the smart contracts.
