Malawian: Houses owned by individual Igbos were returned to them in the S/West. The then Federal Military Government however deliberately confiscated Ojukwu's properties. Infact, Ojukwu would have faced firing Squad if he had returned under the military regime. The then reigni Shagari civilian Government, out of political exigencies, saw the need the need to pardon Ojukwu. 2 Likes |

IGBOSON1: Ever ethnic group strive to promote it's interest. The Ijaws, Efiks,Oron, Ogoni, Ekpeye and Ikwerre agitating for their own Region (COR) which led to the creation of Rivers and Cross River States in 1967 (which forced Ojukwu to hurriedly declare Biafra 5 days later) were acts of self determination and not necessarily anti-Igbo stands. There wouldn't have been civil war, ifGowon had created the 12 States in Jan,1967. 2 Likes |

IGBOSON1: Get your facts right; Awolowo was only premier of Western Region between 1952-1959. During the civil war, Military Governors were the people in-charge of the S/West and not Awolowo. Awolowo, was not in-charge of feeding Biafrans, so the often repeated allegation that he starved Biafrans is a bold lie. What really happened was that the Federal Military Government effected a land, sea and air blockade of Biafra to prevent smuggling of weapons into the secessionist enclave. It must be noted that by this time, the Ijaw, Ogoni, Oron ,Efik and most of the coastal peoples cooperated with the military Government to make sure that this policy worked. The Gowon Regime provided a safe land corridors for food and other relief materials to reach Biafra with the condition of 100% inspection by Federal Authority, a great humanitarian gesture which the Biafran Authority rejected. Ojukwu, instead preferred air-lifting of food (+ weapons) from Sao Tome & Principle to land at a clandestine 'Airport' called the Uli Airstrip which operated between 12 midnight -3am. When the 3rd Marine Commando under Obasanjo captured the Uli Airstrip in 1969, it signalled the beginning of the end of Biafra. 3 Likes |

aribisala0: ‘There is nowhere you go to war and expect to be fed by your adversaries’! This is a comment that can only come from a hateful, medieval-minded thug who doesn’t know what the rules of engagement are between two parties at war! Ever heard of the Geneva convention!? Well, the Gowon gov’t (of which Awo was a central figure during the war years) fell foul of this convention on many fronts! Nobody expected you to ‘feed the adversary’ as you claim, but you were EXPECTED BY INTERNATIONAL LAW, not to wickedly mount a food blockade around the territory of said adversary...more so, after you had used your hired Arab pilots to strafe Biafran farmlands, schools and markets! The so called ‘police action’ couldn’t be concluded on the battlefield, as your lot expected...your pogrom-loving, murderous and weakass Nigerian soldiers weren’t up to the task, so Awo brought up the ‘brilliant’ idea to starve non-combatants so the Biafra military high-command would capitulate! It never for one moment bothered him that his plan would target non-combatants, but so long as the Biafran soldiers couldn’t be defeated on the battlefield...man-to-man, this was the only alternative that would see the northern hegemony ‘win’ the war and sustain the geographical expression Awo had been against from the onset! One would have expected a man, who said Nigeria was a mere geographical expression, to take advantage of the fact the northern hegemony had their hands full facing Biafra, and work towards pulling his own region/people out from the contraption as well! One would have expected Awo not to speak from both sides of his mouth, but act based on his earlier assertion that ‘if by omission or commission, Biafra was allowed to secede, that the Western Region would leave also’! This statement, more than anything else, showed he thought he had the authority and backing of the Yoruba to determine if they remain in Nigeria or secede! His pronouncements said one thing, while his actions said another! If that isn’t the height of deception, double-speak and being two-faced then i don’t know what is! Awo was in no way ‘fair’ to Ndigbo! Having a sudden prick of conscience after helping the northern Islamic hegemony to get away with murder (murder before and during the uncivil war), is not any sane persons definition of being fair! If you wanna talk of Yoruba who were fair to Ndigbo, you talk of Soyinka and Fela! And i’m sure if Gani Fawehinmi had something to say on the matter, he’d be fair-minded as well! One thing i’ve noticed about Yoruba bigots like you is you are not prepared to admit Awo made a few wrong calls as pertains his stance on the uncivil war, ‘one Nigeria’, and the place of the Yoruba race in the world comity of nations! Igbos have severally made known their feelings on Zik and his love for ‘one Nigeria’ over and above that which he had for his ethnicity, but not bigoted Yoruba like you! You’d sooner take a bullet than admit Awo was anything but infallible and holy! No amount of monies handed back to Igbos as a result of having a guilty conscience and to make himself out to be ‘the good guy’, can compensate for the millions of innocent lives he helped waste for a cause he never believed in ab-initio! If he had apologised before passing on, or if his apostles like you had shown a bit of remorse, then that would be a different case. But no....you still insist till tomorrow that Awo is blameless and fair-minded! You see how your hateful and vindictive mind works!? Let’s say, for the sake of argument that Zik planned with the Balewa gov’t to throw Awo in jail on trumped up charges of treasonable felony.....let’s just say for a moment this was true (even though i don’t believe it happened as you say), you mean to tell me that was justification enough for him to ally with the very same group (northern hegemony) responsible for throwing him in jail in the first place!? Unless of course you’re now saying it was Zik who dreamt up the whole plan and bullied the Balewa gov’t into executing it!? Even at that, it shows your level of hate, depravity and malevolence that you could use the purported actions of Zik as justification for visiting such level of misplaced retribution on the entire Igbo race! Your case is irredeemable! Your hate and bigotry have turned you into the very epitome of evil! 2 Likes |

eduj: Sir , Port Harcourt Lands can only now be acquired on a 99 year leasehold Port Harcourt Lands still belong to the Indigenes Sir , How would you feel if you discovered that your Corrupt Local Government Chairman using his Position and Office had Sold 93% of your Hometown Permanently without your Permission for which you were later paid a measly N2000 that you never asked for on a Piece Of Land that was immediately resold for N60,000 to his Uncle You then took your Case to Court but couldn’t get Justice because the Judges were Azikiwe’s friends and had also received their own share of your Ancestral Lands as settlement ? Azikiwe Sold 93% of Port Harcourt on ETERNAL FREEHOLD much of it to his Kinsmen, friends and relatives after acquiring it using Eastern Region Funds channelled through his ACB Bank Even the Land Titles had been Completely taken away from the Indigenous owners by Azikiwes Eastern Region Government It is like how Magodo in Lagos was taken by force by a Military Govt against the will of the Indigenous owners who were paid Peanuts much of the land was dashed to Powerful Military Officers the rest was sold by the State Government at exorbitant prices and the Original Land owners were left in near destitution telling their offspring the bitter story of how they had been deprived of their Ancestral heritage This was the Genesis of the Abandoned Property Saga in Port Harcourt 2 Likes |

Idiko1: oyatz: Re: Open Letter Of Resignation To Odumegwu Ojukwu This is the letter of resignation written by Ojukwu's Chief Propangadist and International PR person. "OPEN LETTER OF RESIGNATION TO ODUMEGWU OJUKWU FROM Robert S. Goldstein Public Relations Representative of Biafra in the United States (Published in the Morning Post, Lagos, August 17, 1968) As your Public Relation's Representative in the United States, it is my distasteful duty to tender my resignation based on the following points: POINT 1 - In November of 1967 when we met in Umuahia, you and your Cabinet were very impressive. You told me of the woes of your little Republic, that thousands of people had died, were dying and more were prepared to die for freedom's sake. You and your Cabinet told me you believed world opinion would help your cause if you could get your story across. You expressed the opinion that very few if any people in the United States knew of the plight of the Biafrans. You asked me to tell the world that Britain had teamed up with Russia in a conspiracy with the Federal Government of Nigeria to murder every Ibo in Biafra. You suggested I use my talents to induce the Press to write about the Biafran side of the war, as at that time all news came out of Lagos. You will recall I did not take the asssignment that day but stayed on several days before deciding to take that job. To help win the peace At that time I stated to you and your cabinet that I was taking the assignment making it crystal clear I would try my best to help win the peace not the war. POINT TWO - I immediately arranged the first world Press conference in Biafra inviting the US Press as well as journalists and television people from England, France, Switzerland, Africa and other parts of the Globe. This was the first news break through. I arranged regular trips into Biafra for the world Press, helped set up stringers, etc., so that your statements and the statements of your Cabinet would be heard. At that time, I was absolutely positive you were right and your cause was a just one in the best interests of the free world and your countrymen. POINT THREE - Finally the Republic of Biafra was recognized first by Tanzania, then quickly followed by Gabon, the Ivory Coast and Zambia. Our public relations work was paying off, world opnion was starting to side with us. Peace talks were arranged at Kampala. I thought that if anyone walked away from the table it would be the Federal Government. But to my dismay it was Biafra that left the Conference. After all the fighting and killing, I knew that peace would not come easy but I could not understand leaving the Peace Conference until the last point was negotiated and the avenue explored. POINT FOUR - Then urgent telex messages were received from 'Biafra' telling of tens of thousands of people starving in the refugee camps, the villages, the bush country - stating if something werent done in the next few months over a million women, children and aged would be starved to death. I immediately contacted the Press, urgently petitioned the State Department for action on their part. Food, medicine and milk were sent to the only available ports open for immediate shipment to 'Biafra' via land routes through Federal and Biafra territory, under the auspices of world organizations such as the International Red Cross among others. Then came the incredible answer from 'Biafra' that land corridors could not be acceptable until there was a complete ceasefire, and that an airlift was the only solution to feed the starving. You then appeared before the various Heads of State and representatives of the OAU at Niamey in Niger. I fully expected you to at least accept the world help that was offered your starving throngs. However, you delayed, hoping to use these unfortunates with world sympathy on their side as a tool to further your ambition to achieve war concessions at the upcoming peace talks in Addis Ababa. Thus innocent victims continue to perish needlessly of starvation, the most agonising death that can befall any living creature. POINT FIVE - This was incredible to me. I am now convinced that I have been used by you and your cabinet to help in military adventures of your origin....using your starving hordes as hostages to negotiate a victory. If at some later date, following the isuance of this letter, you do concede to allow a mercy land corridor...would you expect me to agree to espouse before the world Press the incredible delay of your decision. What explanation could I honestly give for the needless prolongation of this horror. Inconceivable acts I pray this communication may in some small way influence you to move affirmatively, allowing the mercy land corridor to be born. It is inconceivable to me that you would stop the feeding of thousands of your countrymen (under auspicies of world organizations such as the International Red Cross, World Council of Churches and many more) via a land corridor which is the only practical way to bring in food to help at this time. It is inconcivable to me that men of good faith would try to twist world opinion in such a manner as to deceive people into believing that the starvation and hunger that is consuming 'Biafra' is a plot of Britian, Nigeria and others to commit genocide. POINT SIX - I cannot in all conscience serve you any longer. Nor can I be a party to suppressing the fact that your starving thousands have the food, medicine and milk available to them.....it can and is ready to be delivered through international organizations to you. Only your constant refusal has stopped its delivery. I am this date, tendering my resignation and am returning to Mr. Collins Obih of the African Continental Bank all the fees you have given me (Letter of Credit No. 354 $400,000 US.) I have sent your representative in New York a Bond in the amount of 800.000 pounds that I was holding in your behalf. I have also this date, sent the Bond of 200,000 pounds issues by the Central Bankl of Nigeria back to them for disposal. POINT SEVEN - I am now convinced that one Nigeria is the only solution to peace. I also call upon you Mr. Ojukwu to allow your starving people to be fed. Their well-being is of deep concern to me as well as other right thinking people of the world. Your acting in the utmost haste in this matter is in my opinion the first step toward any lasting peace in your country." Robert S. *The economy of the former Eastern Region was planned from ground up by the US consulting firm Arthur D. Little.* *Dr. Azikiwe brought them and they worked with M I Okpara at first, then with Sam Otti and later Eluwa who headed the Civil Service and later with Sir Louis Phillip Odumegwu Ojukwu who at the time was the Chairman of the Eastern Nicerian Development Corporation (ENDC) and also the Chairman of the Eastern Nigeria Commodities Board (ENCB)* Louis Phillip Odumegwu Ojukwu also sat as Chairman of 15 multinational companies at the time - John Holt, PZ, Michelin, Costain, Thomas Wyatt, Guinness, GB Ollivant etc He was so rich that he single handedly funded the establishment of the Lagos Stock Exchange but refused to list his company there for fear of losing control His photo still hangs proudly on the floor of that exchange as its first chairman *Arthur D Little also worked with a coterie of young Eastern Nigerian economists at the time - Pius Okigbo (PhD Northwestern), Ukwu I. Ukwu (PhD Cambridge), Chukwu Sunday Okongwu (PhD Harvard). These young men in their early twenties worked with Arthur D Little to plan our economy from scratch* I know this because Ukwu I Ukwu taught me at Nsukka and I also worked in Dr Chu SP Okongwu's economic planning firm right during and after grad school in Nigeria. *Arthur D. Little recommended the setting up of a university in the East to produce key skills needed to drive economic growth as most of those skills were not being taught in Ibadan at the time* *Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe sent Dr Akpabio (MA Columbia) who at the time was the East's Minister of Education on an extended tour to universities in Michigan and New York for collaboration in key fields like medicine, engineering,, surveying and photogrammetry and business administration.* *UNN was the first school in Nigeria to offer many of these courses.* Ibadan at the time taught mostly Classics, General Science and later Medicine *Palm oil, Palm Kernel, Coal, Cocoa (from Ikom), Coffee from Obudu and later petroleum from firstly Izombe - Oguta area and later from Oloibiri in Ijaw land drove the economy of the East* *In terms of development, the East started late, compared to the West.* *Development and education had started in Lagos and Abeokuta right after Beecroft occupied Lagos in 1850s and made it a British colony. Lagos and the SW thus had more than a 70 year headstart over the East in terms of total gross capital formation and the platform that it gave for growth.* *But after the implementation of Arthur D Little's recommended growth plan, the East's economy grew at more than 9.2%, starting from 1958 till 1967 when the war began* *At over 9%, the Eastern Region in this period, had the fastest growing economy on earth consistently for 9 years and was estimated to equal Western Nigeria by 1978 (in terms of total gross capital formation) and then overtake the Western Region after that.* The civil war truncated that momentum and the East never recovered after that. *Louis Philip Odumegwu Ojukwu brought his industrial influence to bear on the growth plan as he singlehandedly pushed for the establishment of not just industrial estates but industrial corridors in the region.* *An industrial estate is localized. An industrial corridor joins two or more industrial estates to form an industrial conurbation.* *Industrial estates sprang up across the East TransAmadi in PH.* *Aba for light industries.* *Umuahia for biotechnology.* *Emene in Enugu for steel and industrial automation.* *Nkalagu, PH and Calabar for cement and building materials.* *Onitsha as an emporium to drive retail trading.* *Obudu in Cross River for dairy, holidaying and corporate meetings.* *Because he was the chairman of 15 multinational companies at the time, he used his influence to compel many of them to buy into the East's industrialization plan.* *Okpara also partnered with Israel for the setting up of industrial farms and plantations - seedling production, extension services, assistance to farmers etc.* *So plantations (cashew nuts, palm kernel, cocoa, coffee, timber etc) sprang up in Oghe (Enugu State), Okigwe (Abia State), Obudu, Itumbenuzor, Akamkpa all in Cross River state and in various parts of Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia etc.* *Okpara personally delivered some of the seedlings himself by driving behind the trucks that did the delivery.* *Sir Louis Phillip Odumegwu Ojukwu pushed for the establishment of 3 major cement plants in the region - Nkalagu, Eastern Bulkcem in PH and Calabar cement factory in Calabar.* *Nkalagu and PH opened before the war started in 1967. Everything for the take off of the Calabar cement factory was purchased but the war truncated its take off.* *In 1970, Governor Esuene of the newly-created Cross River State opened Calcemco plant to the appause of many.* *Three industrial corridors were planned also planned for the East* *The Emene-Nkalagu Industrial corridor which was to focus on automobiles, building materials and industrial automation. Kaiser Motors in the US at the time (it has since been acquired) had agreed to build a car plant in Emene and a plant for car engines. That corridor was to stretch for almost 100 miles* *The second industrial corridor was to stretch between PH and Aba. So industrial centers were set up in Trans Amadi and in Aba and over a ten to 15 year period, these two centers were to be linked by many feeder industries that would be located on the highway joining both cities.* *Okpara had hoped that over time, the PH-Aba industrial corridor would follow the old road between Port Harcourt and Enugu and join with the Emene - Nkalagu industrial corridor to create a massive industrial cornubation that almost imitates the almost 200 kilometer Ruhr Industrial Valley in Germany built under Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck* *Onitsha was to drive the East's Retail economy and so the market was built there as an Emporium...to attract buyers from all over Nigeria and West and Central Africa so they could come spend their money in the East.* *Dubai would copy this same model 50 years later and implement it successfully but on a global scale. Onitsha market achieved its purpose by 1958, two years after the East achieved self government. It became the preferred destination for retail and bulk shoppers from a over West Africa and even Cameroon, Gabon and Congo. This gave the Anambra Igbo a head start in retail trading...an advantage that they enjoy till date.* *All of these development and growth projects were centrally driven by the Eastern Nigeria Development Corporation - ENDC and the revenues were centrally aggregated into the account of the Eastern Nigerian Commodities Board (ENCB). Both groups were headed by Sir Louis Phillip Odumegwu Ojukwu* *Funds for development came mostly from 3 sources.* *1. Local revenues from the export of cocoa(Ikom and Itumbenuzor), coffee (Obudu and Arochukwu), timber (Akamkpa) Coal (Enugu-Udi), Palm oil (Rivers, Imo, Abia), Palm kernel (Rivers, Imo, Abia)* *2. Direct Foreign Investments* *3. Loans from Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC)* *Umuahia was to midwife the Easts' biotechnology industries which explains why Golden Guinea Brewery and the Root Crop Research Instutute were established there.* *Obudu because of its pristine hills and its fresh weather was to be a holiday resort for many as well as a primary center for a dairy industry that just started before the war commenced. Obudu Cattle Ranch was the first in a series of investments that got scuttled in Obudu by the war.* *Lastly, oil was discovered late. Chief Nwodo, Eastern Nigeria's first Minister for Trade (father to the past Ohaneze Chairman) negotiated the first contracts with Shell on a 50-50 investment and sharing basis.* *Virtually all of the East's oil assets were seized by the Federal Government under Gowon with no compensation paid till date. The Federal Government simply inherited the East's 50% slot and paid nothing for it. Today everyone profits from it* *Most of the catalytic cracking and downward refineries that NNPC would later build were in the plans that the Eastern Regional Government had for the region.* *Today, some of those plants are located in far away Kaduna and no mention is ever made of the East.* *Every Nigerian today depends on that oil to survive including states that claim that they can survive from internally-generated revenues.* *I believe that rather than whine everyday, we Igbos should sit down and learn our history...take a look at the growth plans that got scuttled in 1967 and see how we can work to together to pick up the pieces and build again from scratch* *Nnamdi Ezeji* 1 Like |

Idiko1:EVICTED ? Implying Ojukwu was occupying Vllaska Lodge> Do you have evidence ? Did the house belong to Ojukwu or to a company owned by his father? Always you see the tribal angle Did Yorubas not lose property to the military government in Lagos state under that same Mudashiru? |

Idiko1: The is a blatant lie. The properties were aquired by the Federal Government during the civil war and NOT in 1985. |

oyatz:Actually the property was not physically occupied for many years and when Ojukwu returned he forced entry and took possession. That really s what is noteworthy that when Ojukwu returned no one had taken posssession I do not know if there was any gazetted take over but I doubt it. The position of the Lagos state Military Government was that the property did not belong to Ojukwu which is a technical /legal matter and that he was a trespasser. The property belonged to a company which presumably Ojukwu's father owned but which should have been paying tax Anyway I always advise not falling for these tricks to divert attenton from the sublect of the thread when they see they have lost the argument This thread is not about Lagos state but Port Harcourt Saro Wiwa Confiscated property No one has shown any evidence to substantiate that Do not allow anyone to get you talking about whether Mary was really a virgin when she conceived Jesus |

If I say Buhari created the World and you say no . Who has to prove ? The onus is on he who declares to prove That is the way logic works but you won't understand I do not know what the photo is I have no clue. I just do not believe what the OP is saying that is all Why should I believe . That photo could be anywhere even outside Nigeria . I do not know |
