Majority of former gover­nors and senators across political divide in the coun­try have expressed their readiness to back the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State governor and nation­al leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Independent has gathered.

A Third Republic sena­tor from the North-West­ern part of the country, who disclosed this to Daily Independent on Thursday, said many of them who are still in active politics are ready to take Tinubu’s projects as their own.

He also said that even those who have said good­bye to partisan politics have expressed their will­ingness to come out of their shell and lend sup­port to Tinubu’s quest to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office in 2023.

Tinubu, then a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) represented Nigeria’s largest senato­rial district, Lagos West in the National Assembly from 1992 to 1993 as a sen­ator until Third Republic was aborted.

Upon the return of dem­ocratic governance to the country in 1999, he contest­ed for governor of Lagos State on the platform of the defunct Alliance for De­mocracy (AD). He won and was reelected for another term in 2003 until 2007.

According to our source, “Many of those who are senators in the Third Republic see Tinu­bu’s project as our proj­ect. We will give him the maximum support that he required irrespective of our political divide. I also believe senators who served before us and those who came after us will support him too because there is a group where we all belong. Once a senator, always one.

“I can also reliably in­form you that it is the same among the 1999 set of governors. Those who are alive will support him. That is the spirit that binds them together in spite of their political leanings or ideologies. So, being a senator and ex-governor gives Tinubu a strong advantage in the 2023 presidential election. Tinubu will most likely be stopped at the primary. If he scale through the primary hurdle, they north will abandon him with APC and seek new alliance with SS/ SE.
