You can open a fixed deposit account, for as many years as you like or buy a developed property that is genuine.

Shares is outdated. They are worth peanuts. Their era is past.

Although I support you saying he shouldn't be in a hurry

I suggest putting his brother's portion in fixed deposit.

As much as fixed deposit is good but the value of the money will depreciate. I will advise he put the money in insurance scheme that he can have access to the money in 5 years time with lucrative interest on the funds not bank that hardly put any interest on the money. There is a saying that money today is not equal to money tomorrow

Hello Nairalanders,

So straight to the point. Please I need your advice about two things.

1. I just got my inheritance and I got cash of 8M and there's this popular belief of people squandering their inheritance,I don't want that to be my portion so which business can I invest it into. For context, I currently have a job and I'm not ready to quit so please put that into consideration.

2. My younger brother is still a student so he has asked me to save his portion of 6M in bank until he graduates but I don't think that's a good idea. I would rather he put it in some form of secure investment that will be yielding something. Kindly give us suggestions.

May the soul of my beloved Father continue to rest in peace. Amen

U can invest in SEC certified investment companies
Like Citi trust ltd and reaprite
Pls take note of d SEC certified

I don't usually comment but I do read from time to time but I belief you are sincere and I think I can assist with my token.

1. Watch this Youtube video from alux.com - (15 Things To Do If You Get Rich All of a Sudden). Link -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVJOyArnq3s
2. Pick a pen and paper and write down all the suggestions you have seen from Nairalanders and review/meditate on it. They wil give you some ideas on Financial Education.

Having said the above, this is what I will do if I find myself in your exact situation.

1. I will not quit my job. I will continue working like nothing has happened.
2. I will change my brother's 6m in US Dollar and invest it with Stanbic IBTC Dollar denominated Money Market fund. You can walk into any StanbicIBTC Asset Management office to open an account.
3. I will do the same for my own N 8m.
4. I will not do any investment or business with the money until a minimum of 6 months.
5. I will get financially educated and review all suggestions above and choose 2 or 3 viable ideas and invest 20% of the money and see how it goes for at least a year.

I belief If I followed thses 5 steps, by 12 months I will be in a better situation to make decision on the remaining 80%.

I wish you the best.

Stange you quickly forgot the part where you said OP should go to the factory in China himself !!!... Plane ticket is cheap now ?

It's better to go to china and get it when he has 14million because when you go to bank to covert your naira to yuan it's around 60-65 but when you use agent they will collect 93 yuan per products and they are not trustworthy because they are after your money not your desire for your business to be profitable, they won't test your items if it's working or not they will just ship the way the seller sent but buying it from factory directly you can negotiate with them, you will test the item yourself and see and you can also tour some factory for many things to add to your business and you can see something that they have there that it's not in Nigeria and also you will have proper documentation with them and it's not all the time you will have to go there when you have gone there for the first time and they have your contact...they can ship the item to you too Nigeria anytime, I cant be explaining all this, do you think it's all the time jumia go to china....they have there supplier numbers

A factory in china can't afford to loose someone buying a goods worth 5 million or can you lose a client that is paying you 6 figures..

My brother go and find good land in a suitable place.. At least 1 and half hectare which wouldn't cost you more than 2.5m, spend 2m on fencing then plant palm trees, plantain and leave some portion for arable crops. In the night 7 _9 years you will come back to praise the lord

Here's my advice. Split the money 10 ways. Two parts to a stockbroker, a part for bonds, another 3 for crypto(crypto will crash to between 8k to 15k so u wait till then to buy and hold), a part dollar holdings, another for TBs(treasury bills), the last 3parts for land purchase.

The only thing you can successfully do with that money is to buy a land
And maybe build on it

Depending on your location though.

If you put the money into a business it may not go well

You will do your best but inheritance has a way of vanishing mostly when it is Money if it is clothes with time it will start tiring on it own.

Money gotten from inheritance na by grace my brother

You can ask people around you who has inherited wealth
They will tell you more

Or nairalanders with experience
Sha

Good luck

When you already spend close to a million on your own transportation alone, how much profit will now remain, not to even talk of Covid test money....... And it's like you don't know 5m Naira is not even up to 60,000 Yuan. You expect factories dealing in wholesale goods worth over 100 thousands of yuan to treat you like a king ?!!!! ... Rest bro....

The best investments usually are on yourself.

So, buy a laptop and a digital based skill for you and your brother, maybe from Udemy, perhaps email marketing or UI/UX.

The reason for this is the world is going to merge with the metaverse soon, so u need something u can pitch as value to another person in exchange for money. In order not to be constrained by your geographic location, you need to be able to offer this value online.

Next, take some money and upgrade your wardrobe. I don't mean buy amiri or ashluxe or those tear tear jeans wey dem draw gun or flower on top. With palm slippers wey u go begin resemble who efcc de find. You can still get those if that's your style and your wish, but for real, just get a few decent mature stuff. Some suits, and definitely some shoes and good perfume. I've learnt that packaging goes a long way in this life, it at least gets you to the front door of where you want to be, to get inside the house however, will require other attributes.
Also, invest in a good gym or better yet assemble some gym equipment at home. Nothing much, just basic weights.
To some reading, this may sound useless but again, I implore you to read the first sentence of this response. If you won't even invest in yourself, how likely is it that others will want to invest in you. Health-wise, I don't need to justify the gym expenditure for you. You've heard it while growing up that health is wealth. Also if you remember how dem do laykon of bbn because if him body u may understand better.

Two, something fit happen, u lose all that money without ever having the chance to do something good for yourself. Na just regret u go de regret.

The budget for all that,I will leave to op's discretion, all that self care spending can get addictive easily, just don't be foolish about it.

Finally, there should still be some millions left, take it and buy USDT. The digital version of the dollar in the crypto world. Once acquired, put it in locked staking, if u are using binance. It's like the crypto version of fixed deposit. Or if you are feeling courageous, you can buy some trusted coins like (Ethereum, Solana, Luna, Btc, Ftm) (this is not financial advice), now that we are in a dip and prices have fallen, coins are cheaper. Buy and don't be panicking and checking everyday to see if your money is decreasing. Don't sell until the prices are back up and are higher than the point at which u bought. Whatever year it may be. You're holding for the long term.

The reason for this is even if you put it in traditional banks fixed deposit, your interest will not be meaningful. Their interest rates are not really eye popping, u fit leave the 8m for 3 years for bank na only 8k u go come see as interest on top after the 3 years. And the naira value may fall even further in those three years, making your 8 million less powerful than if you had spent it today. Bread fit be 100k next year, use that as an example.
If you decide to buy land, it's good but your focus should be on reselling it as land always appreciates in value. If you decide to build, you will need way more than that 8million, if you doubt me go check price of iron rod today or dangote cement. Let's say you miraculously manage to develop it, you might not see you money back till you first child's 28th birthday. Because 1, you might not find tenants, 2 you may find tenants they don't want to pay the price you need to recover your money soon, some won't even pay you the rent and will damage the property, they'll then take advantage of the law and be dragging you to court. As time passed, the only person winning is the lawyer who is billing you every time he appears in court for your case and some of the judges too. Maybe you are lucky and the case is settled after like 2 years. You won, but at what cost? Financially and time spent. So buy the land to flip it after a year or two or three.
If you choose jakpa na him go worse pass, first of all u will use close to half of that money to get there, and then some more just to hold body while you try to settle into your new environment. E fit happen you no get meaningful thing to do there now you find urself living in worse conditions than when u were here, just that u have a little more safety and 247 light, and you get what u pay for, which are not usually cheap. When u tire to de wander for wilderness u return here with ur last card, nothing to show except accent and your 8m inheritance gone in the wind. You can be lucky though, it's a gamble.
Then finally, the best is always to channel it to a business, but business wey u no sabi or get one competitive edge/advantage over others, is just you gambling your money and paying manager and staff salaries, just so you can answer name as 'oga' or 'CEO', if you already have a proven way of generating money then channel the money there to grow it. Otherwise, refer to the above mentioned.

Please don't message me to consult later. Don't even use this as advice, I'm just commenting so e go enter another page. Cheers.

Don't ever make the mistake to invest your money with anybody.

You can start blogs in different EVER GREEN NICHES targeting audience from the tier 1 countries. With your money, you can hire good writers from Nigeria and also run social media campaigns to promote your blog. In 2 years time, you will be glad you did.

Hi, greetings!

Care to share the ever green niches? I'm a copywriter and I'm planning to establish a blog this year. I'm yet to pick a niche. I need ideas and suggestions.

Thanks

Alright!

Evergreen niches are contents that remain fresh so long as the Internet exists. Unlike news blogs which become obsolete in just a few days.
These are some examples of evergreen niches:

1)Health

2) Wealth

3) Relationship

4) Self-help

5) Technology

Hope this helps

But lands with good title and leave them there if you don't have time to be running around.

14m can actually build a rental property that'll earn both of you annual income.

Get a half plot of land somewhere "open" with like 4m to 6m, use the 8 to 10m to put lockup shops on it and have them rented out.

In 4 to 5 year's time, you can resell the land and the property on it or renovate the property into something more "standard" to earn better returns.
