grin grin I know you didn't do a structural drawing for that building instead one old baba that wears native clothes told you he has built 20 hotels and you gave him the job.
Your house is headed for a collapse and there's nothing you can do to stop it. You must have alot of balls to even be climbing the stairs of a death trap.
A shaking decking and you still allow ppl to climb it, looks like you are playing wit govt or you think govt is playing.

How are you able to conclude he doesnt have a structural drawing? I would ask questions before coming to a conclusion.

Hello guys.....thank God I found this thread.

I have a duplex under construction, we are at the roofing stage now, but my worry is I noticed the decking in two room vibrate if u jump on it. I first noticed it when a helper dropped a bucket of sand on the floor of the deck while I was standing on it. The way I felt a pulse under my feet I didnt like it. Few days later I noticed cracks under the deck......

I called the engineers attention and he said it was poor concrete mixture and that the guyz that poured d decking didn't get to the right level.

His solution is to chisel off the middle of d decking in d room about 9inches and then introduce an external beam.

Meaning we will crack open the middle of the room abt 9inches wide, wall to wall and then introduce a beam under.

What do the experts here thing. I'm really worried bcs cracking a decking isnt soo good, would it not affect the whole building.

I will not talk about the property side.

I will talk about the legal implications.

You may have a defective structure; you have also made the fact that you are aware public knowledge.

If anything happens to anyone on that site and you can be linked to this profile, then it is no longer pure negligence (unintentional torts), it is a case of premeditated harm aka intentional torts.

You can be sued for millions.

Please invite a fit and proper structural engineer to assess the situation and determine next steps.

You also stand a very serious chance of losing the property to government as a result of the property going down and harming people.

Carefully ponder your next steps Sir.

Lot of structural issues here now.
The user with vibration problem
If you are the owner of the build the truth is you will never feel comfortable with the vibration and you tend to feel it more than others as this is normal we as an individual react to vibration in different manners but there's permissible allowance for each structure,

Since the vibration on your build is not from external source like building close to the bridge , highway or railway's then maybe some questioning will go into the structural members serviceability limit state sizing, construction pictures, over reinforced or lighty reinforced, you made mention of seeing defect already, well i proposed in absence of not having a reall pictures of what you said retrofit using steel rather than cracking your deck and beam open..

Tell your engineer to re run the the analysis to determine the stress point maybe after NDT and some carbonation and vibration check equipment should be installed ,then he compared bth frequency with allowable etc..

For user with crack and stressed deck
If you dont own the build pack out as solution to defective structure is quite expensive and i know the landlord will plaster it off and let to the nxt individual.

But if you r the owner get an engineer to determine the problem, building are like patient to engineers as well let him move around and ask more questions to observe if maybe other thing r wrong,

Poor concrete mixture might be a problem, another likely cause can be the reinforcement, that is the rods, maybe they're are not properly connected or hinged together. You have done the right by an Engineer, but i hope you called the right engineer, engineer by profession and certification not by title.

Mr okenwa mentioned scredding will fix the cracks. I saw this scredded wall and the plastering crack is still very visible.

I appreciate all the opinions given.

For those building in Ado -odo otta, does the local govt collect any money for decking. A notice was placed on my build asking me to pay 100k for the decking

That was from ọmọ onílè. grin
After they demand money for decking, they will come back when you're about to roof the building, for roofing levy.
Didn't you pay them foundation levy before?

All these "Engineers" sef..

Does your building have a well calculated structural drawing? Or the Engineer just handled it how he liked?

Truth is, "cost" of repair is usually more than doing the right thing from the outset.

AND when I say "cost", I don't mean financial cost alone.

Was the Engineer on site during the casting? Seemed like you got the casters yourself too.

He is correct, you have to introduce new columns calculatively ( each of the columns should have column base with steel reinforcement) for the purpose of transferring the load to the ground, it cannot just be on the wall, it's columns that suspends it.

Please how many columns will be needed and can you tell the estimated cost? Its 39ft by 49ft building

It's unsual for ceiling fan to cause cracks on a reinforced slab.
You need to carryout a comprehensive check on the slab especially since you intend to put an additional load on it.

Get a structural engineer to examine and conduct integrity test on the slab. This will ascertain the strength of the concrete..

BigFrog:
My shop decking is cracking as a result of the ceiling fun hanging rod they put up there. It's not firm. It wobles with the ceiling fan and I now notice cracking allover it decking.

Another thing is I plan to uninstall the ceiling fan. The decking is a new deck ans there is plan to put another shop on top. I was worried if all this will affect the structure and it looks like the deck is not strong.

I need advice from experience personal from this house to advise.

Chiselling the slab and introducing a beam on the wall might not solve this problem. Get a second opinion by inviting an external structural engineer to look at the building.

Good Day To all the Professionals in the built industry contributing to the thread.

I've been following this thread for a while now, although I have no construction projects which I own or handle.

I'm a professional in embryo, having just finished NYSC,
I studied Building. BSc.

In the built industry, most companies or individuals are usually looking for professionals with cognate experience. I understand experience matters a lot. "If you no sabi; you no sabi niyen, no 2 ways about it". Also, hiring an individual with no experience to handle a project could cause a great damage in the long run.

That being said,

I'm currently seeking a position as a graduate Trainee or intern in a construction company.

if anybody is looking to hire an intern or trainee who would assist him/her in running day to day activities on and off site, I'm your Guy!

I'm a fast learner and I love getting my hands and clothes dirty.
Contributing to the success of project is something that I love to do!

I looking forward to celebrating the success of a project with the firm I'll be working with, the feeling of having to see a completed project which I was part of, looking back and recollecting past events, challenges that was faced and solved in ensuring the project is success!

I'm based in Lagos. However, am I willing to relocate? the answer is YES!

The iron bender that did the decking are to be blamed here. I think they didn't put internal beam across before reinforcement and you supervisor must be crappy for not speaking out
