Karlovych: The names above had top strikers ahead of them Bebeto had Ronaldo for instance. Bergkamp in the national team had Kluivert. At Arsenal had I think Wright. I think Romario had a lot of criticism for poor defensive contributions. Today, it is so strict. I am not saying in the past we did not have them but it gets stricter as the modern game evolves. Firmino would hardly had ever played as a top nine in the recent past. |

Barryseal: I think with respect to video analysis, I do not know much about how in-depth Dr. Terry is but I believe he is sound enough for that. Joseph Yobo seems the one handling physical fitness, he is highly exposed to high-quality physical coaching and I think he is good enough for the job. As for Agu, I think his time is up. We need fresh ideas in that department and I think someone indigenous will best suit due to the need of carrying out thorough scouting locally. |

TheGoodJoe:I forgot Dr Terry. He appears to be in that sort of video analyst mode. What I meant about a physical trainer is a tested physio. I saw our player eating egusi and poundo on snapchat. Ordinarily, they should be on strictly monitored diet. The world of physio have evolved past being an ex international qualified you as a physio. The morden physios work with a lot of data driven analysis to get players to their peak, Yobo is not fit for this purpose, at best he can assist a real physio. Cameroun for my money are the best preforming team in this tournament. Their physical condition is unmatched by any team I have seen so far. |

Barryseal: I actually took notice of the eba or whatever swallows that they were on and I felt it was detrimental to the team. However, the likes of Eguavoen, Yobo, and Dr. Terry should have deep knowledge of the role of diets and fitness, for me to harp too much about it. However, I hope they have a dietician in their team or make effort to have one soon to improve the teams fitness. Nice input. |

TheGoodJoe:Ronaldo and Kluivert at no point in time were ahead of Bebeto and Bergkamp respectively, once again you come up with defensive contributions like it is the role of a forward. A forwards KPI is to score goals for his team. |

Karlovych: What are you telling me? Bebeto and Ronaldo played Atlanta 96 together and France 98. France 98, Kluivert was the lead striker, Bergkamp was supporting. |

Barryseal: We brag about having one of the best squads in africa but we can't find a good goalie. Naija na just hype abeg. Over hype infact. We have better GKs out there but our useless GK coach Alloy Agu refuses to call them up...Adebayo Adeleye who plays for Hapoel Jerusalem is there but has not been given a chance. Agu is doing us a disservice.. Imagine Noble who is a bench warmer with Enyimba and has been reported to be a jittery goalie makes the team for better goalkeepers in the league, like Olorunleke Ojo (Enyimba) or Adewale Adeyinka (Akwa Utd) who would have been far better choices from the domestic league. 1 Like |

TheGoodJoe: There was nothing sound and strategic about such tactic it made the S.E look abysmal and very negative. A team can like that when they're leading not when it's 0 - 0.. It's was a show of poor game management.. |

codemaniacs: When RB Leipzig used that approach against Manchester City, it worked brilliantly. Maybe you will call that abysmal too. It was a sound strategy and it would have been wrong to just press carelessly and get the team tired. It was sound process but the goal and red card disrupted the strategy. |

TheGoodJoe:So based on your statement that means that Ronaldo and Kluivert were ahead of Bebeto and Bergkamp? All players were centre forwards whose primary responsibilities were to score goals for their teams. A player being ahead of another is akin to Van Nistelrooy being ahead of Kluivert at Euro 2004 where the latter was a bench warmer that lead to his early retirement from the national team at 28. |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2023, 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 12:15pm On Jan 30, 2022 |
Karlovych: You are missing the point. When I said ahead, I mean in position. Ronaldo played closer to goal than Bebeto. So that is why Bebeto will have some of the attributes I talked about Immobile. Kluivert played closer to goal than Bergkamp. Ciro Immobile plays a the most advanced position. However, he pulls up impressive stats in other attributes. |

TheGoodJoe:The likes of Ronaldo and Kluivert despite playing closer to goal all had such attributes as well and regular came into midfield and wide positions to support the attack. |

TheGoodJoe: We're talking about Tunisia not Man City and RB Leipzig.. Tunisia had at least 6 players out due to covid and other injuries. They were a weakened team which means it's Tunisia that was supposed to use and was even using this defensive tactic until they noticed the S.E despite having all it's key players available was also playing defensive. It wasn't a sound strategy when you consider Tunisia's situation.. |

codemaniacs: You guys keep talking players out like if it means a weak team. Nigeria rested players against Burkina Faso and still had a good outing. So leave that side. So as Tunisia is not Manchester City, Nigeria is RB Leipzig. |

Karlovych: You can not compare it to the requirements today. There has been a lot of evolution in the tactical needs of strikers. How many of them then played like Firmino? |

Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2023, 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 12:59pm On Jan 30, 2022 |
Karlovych: That is precisely the tactical difference I am talking about. Immobile is the lead striker but does a lot of work far from goal. Same with Firminho too. Even Benzema with CR7 in Real Madrid did lots of work far from goal. That is exactly my point and how the modern-day strikers are not strictly judged by goals but by what they bring to the table tactically. |
