The Elechi Water front in Diobu, Port Harcourt, is currently being demolished by officials of the Rivers State Government.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpVE6LcYUsw[/url]

Heavily armed mobile Police officers escorted tractors and bulldozers to the area this morning.

Residents of the area said, police officers dispersed occupants of the shanties, who were not allowed to remove their belongings. They added that the government, they don’t respect any rules, they don’t respect the Constitution.

However, the residents pleaded to the Governor to end the ongoing demolition, as they don't have any other place to go.

You would recall that the state governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike had in a broadcast said shanties around the Iloabuchi axis of Diobu, would be demolished.

What stops Government in investing in affordable and sustainable housing projects.

Government in Nigeria is just about exploiting the masses, not providing for them.

That is what they want to do. You cant make an omelette without breaking an egg. Affordable houses cant be built upon shanties. The shanties need to give way.

If you want to do that, you build the affordable housing first and move the people there before demolishing.

The government is not operating a charity organisation. The place wasn't allocated to them by the government. It is a case of one leaving the way they came. Quit Notice has been served since the time of Amaechi. If you dont know ask.

This true. But you know our environment. The politicians in the society with big money bags will not allow it so.

I stayed in a remote Osun town once and you should see how cheap the standard of living is there.

Farmers drive good cars there and stay in good houses with gotv sef.

A mini-flat was N 18k per annum and N300 meal is enough for anyone. ( A wrap of pounded yam is N100 and meat N50)

These people leave such convenience to come dwell in those shanties to live under such deplorable conditions.

To live in the city is not by force, land and building materials are expensive so forget affordable housing for the masses that flock from their villages and towns into cities.

I really like your post however, I feel it can serve as a template for development. A friend of mine who was in the Philippines pointed to this kind of sustainable living plan and how comfortable they lived.

However, when it comes to people who have lived in cities for a while, some born there, you can not expect them to just uproot to the villages.

If the Government wants to really help (which they actually do not), they would make the sustainable goals a priority and improve the lives of those in urban and rural areas.

Please can you tell me the name of this community?

Ila-Orangun is the location in Osun.
Exactly, this is the solution. Improving the lives of those in those rural areas can effectively trigger a reverse migration which helps solve a lot of these issues we face with rapid urbanization.

This people have been living there for the past 40yrs, no rent no taxes, are they owing the government?, was the government supposed to compensate them before eviction?, or the government should have given them a notice of 10yrs more?,
The displacement is not good but it will definitely happen....

You are right.

You will see people staying in small towns living well: have an average car, live in their own houses and have basic conveniences unlike poor people suffering in big cities.

Even in developed countries, most livable cities are usually not the big cities.

First, Lagos dismantled shanties, and now Port Harcourt. I like it.

I have said it many times, the citizens are the enemies of themselves. The population is damn too high, and still getting extremely high. But these people are poor. Read comments....na. Govt should do everything for them. Port Ha4court and Lagos are two expensive cities...yet, they want to live there.

A group of people who cannot control their sex urge is a sinking group.

The world is going tech route and most of these people are not thinking of acquiring the future skills. Very soon govt is who will start feeding them. Govt this...govt that.

Mark all those asking govt to provide cheap accommodations. Is ordinary block cheap? There is no way govt can construct blocks of flats and each apartment wont cost over 5million naira. With the rate at which everything is expensive. How many of those living in the shanties can afford installment payment. If you ask them pay even common N100k ler year, they cant. And if its N100k yearly you ask, how many years will they finish paying all. Think na. Yet they all want to live in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

I know it is hard. The economy is bad. But most of those who are suffering have even more than four kids to care for. When you know you are poor, having just one kid is ok. Nope, they will keep giving birth like dogs...and ask govt to care for them. Sex is everything to them. Very irritating group of people..

The poor should leave Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt and relocate to Osun someone mentioned above. Na by force to live in a city?
