abduleez1:Mid Budget to Low budget movies market has never been theatres. Thier niche was direct to home DVD and with the introduction of VOD, they switched to this. Any mid budget or low budget movie doing a theatrical release is planning to fail financially, thier best bet is a limited run then straight to VOD and it has been working wonders for them, just look at A24. |
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by abduleez1(m): 2:03pm On Jan 31, 2022 |
oyaskii: Bruh you are mistaken. Mid budget movies have always had their share in the theatrical market. Things only changed in the past 3yrs and got worse after Covid. Examples of low to mid budget movies doing great in theatres in the last 4/5 yrs: The Conjuring Universe Split Get Out Joker It 1&2 Uncut Gems Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Knives Out Hustlers Crazy Rich Asians Little Women Ford vs Ferrari John Wick etc... Them over plenty sef wey I fail to mention. And most of these movies have also been critical hits and Award winners asides of being box office hit. 3 Likes |

abduleez1:Bro, Most Mid to low budget movies have always most of the time have one route..Screen at a movie festival - have a pre screening, have limited release ( some skip this) and then go to DVD or VOD. The ones you see that have a wide spread release are those that have favourable "pre screening" so they will know they will likely make a killing if they do a wide spread release so they will strike a deal with a film distribution company say Sony releasing pictures or Warner Bros pictures, these companies will in turn promote and distribute the movies worldwide, so will you still term these movies as "mid or low budget" , putting the distribution company in perspective? |

oyaskii: Bruh these are mid to low budget movies. Doesn't mean much whether you give them promotion in film festivals (Cannes/ TIFF) and the likes. The bone of contention is the budget used in production and marketing. DUNE was promoted in film festivals, will you now use this analogy to claim it's a small movie. Distribution company doesn't matter whether it's coming from juggernauts like WB or Disney. The budgets, the scope of the movie and director attached or genre determines its status — big, low or mid. Case in point WB releases tons of mid budget movies every year. |

abduleez1:Screening doesn't mean much for Big budget movies because they know they will make a killing with or without, but it means a whole lot for mid and low budget movies, because this practically help them guage her successful it will be, a mid or low budget movie that does well in these festivals have big VOD companies or distribution companies fighting for thier rights to the movie. Why big budget movies even bother screening at these festivals is because of awards nods, beacause most of the penalist at these festivals are also on the voting board of awards. In essence what i am saying is that movie festivals aren't restricted to mid or low budget movies alone, but they need and utilize it more...but i am beginning to see your point. |

oyaskii: Yea. I get your point. What I'm trying to say is that some mid budget movies are specifically designed for theatres. I'm not necessarily talking about Indie movies or B-list. Those are the type of movies that mostly depends on film festivals. Independent films from minor studios are usually the ones who depend on film festivals for its promotion and hopes of bigger industry players to buy them or distribution deals asides from Awards bait films. Movies released by traditional studios like John Wick, Old, Malignant, A Queit place and the likes are not designed for festivals as they're not even Award movies. Some movies are targeted at Older audience. Older audience means less money. PS: when I'm talking about mid budget I'm not talking about films produced by IFC, STX, ScreenGems and many unknown studios. I'm talking about WB, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Legendary, UAR, MGM and to a lesser extent A24. Not those tons of shitty B, C and D-list movies released yearly. You can read up this article to get clearer view of what I'm saying.... https://collider.com/why-mid-budget-movies-are-important-for-theaters/ |
