Clinical Senegal down Burkina Faso to qualify to Sunday's final

Senegal celebrate Abdou Lakhad Diallo of Senegal opening goal during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Afcon Finals Semifinal match between Burkina Faso and Senegal
The Teranga Lions of Senegal produced a brilliant second half performance to beat Burkina Faso 3-1 to qualify into Sunday's TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 final.

Defender Abdou Diallo started the party for the 2019 losing finalists when he calmly slotted in from close range on 71 minutes.

The PSG defender kept his cool inside the Burkinabe box after Koulibaly's volley fell on his path before guiding his shot past substitute keeper Soufiane Ouedraogo.

The West African derby lived up to it's billing at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé with Senegal having two penalty claims turned down following VAR reviews.

With an eventful first half which saw the two teams cancelled each other in the middle of the park. Saliou Ciss came close for the Lions of Teranga with low fierce drive past Koffi's far post on 14 minutes.

Edouard Mendy pulled a smart low save on towards his right to deny Burkinabe forward Hassane Bande seven minutes before the break.

The Stallions were forced to change their goalkeeper Kouakou Koffi following a collision with Senegal's Cheikhou Kouyate.

The second half saw both sides going for the breakthrough and it was the Teranga Lions who scored first through Abdou Diallo.

The young defender found the back of the net from close range before Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Dieng doubled their lead from Sadio Mané's clever cut back.

With time running out the Stallions pulled a goal back eight minutes from time when midfielder Ibrahim Blati Toure latched on to Issa Kabore's cross.

Kabore was picked out by captain and talisman Bertrand Traore on the right and the forward placed an inviting delivery towards advancing Toure to slot past Mendy.

The two-time losing finalists completed their task on 83 minutes through star man Sadio Mané. The Liverpool forward showcased his class with he stylishly dinked his effort past Soufiane Ouedraogo to send Senegal to their third TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations final.

Senegal will face the winner in the second semi-final between Egypt and hosts Cameroon in Sunday's final at the Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé.

Battle of Mane vs Salah.
Senegal in a great position to win their first ever AFCON. But Egypt has shown great resilience in eliminating the likes of Ivory Coast, Morocco & Cameroon. So you can never rule them out.

Tipping Senegal to win unless it goes to penalty shootouts.
Wish Senegal wins so they'll taste AFCON glory for the 1st time.
Would be double wahala for Egypt if Senegal wins today & also defeats them in the World Cup playoffs next month.

Some Facts about Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations:

1. Egypt has been a frequent participant, having played in 25 of 33 AFCON editions, the most of all participants in African history.

2. The Egyptians won the inaugural 1957, and successfully defended it two years later.

3.The 2000s witnessed the most successful Egyptian side in AFCON, as Egypt won the tournament back to back from 2006 to 2010, expanding their result to seven, an African record.

4. Egypt is also the country that hosted the most AFCON editions, with five times. Three of them ended with Egypt being crowned champions. The recent 2019 edition was hosted by Egypt, but the Pharaohs had a dismal performance, lost to South Africa, another former AFCON champions, 0–1, right at home turf in the round of sixteen in spite of three group stage wins.

5. Since the beginning of 2017, no player has been directly involved in more goals (9) at the Africa Cup of Nations than Egypt’s Mohamed Salah (six goals, three assists) or Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar (seven goals, two assists).

1. Since the 2000s, Senegal began to surge and became a more competitive opponent in the Africa Cup of Nations.

2. The 2002 tournament marked the best ever result in Senegalese football history, with the team falling to Cameroon 2–3 on penalties after a goalless draw in the final.

3. Senegal once again finished as runners-up in 2019, losing the final 0–1 to Algeria.

4 Following a successful FIFA World Cup debut in 2002, in which the side reached the quarter-finals, Senegal officially established itself as a new powerhouse in Africa. In spite of this improvement, however, Senegal is yet to win an AFCON title in its history.

5. Senegal hosted the AFCON in 1992

The 5 best Egyptian football players to play for their country
The Pharaohs of Egypt are the most successful team on the African continent, having won the African Cup of Nations a record 7 times, with 3 in the 21st century alone.

In this post, we’re discussing 5 of the best Egyptian footballers to ever play.

1. Mohamed Aboutrika
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Forward

Caps: 100. Goals: 38

Considered to be the greatest Egyptian player of all-time, Mohamed Aboutrika’s contribution to the national team and Egyptian football was shorter than most of the peers on this list, yet Aboutrika’s impact was similar or even greater.

His senior international debut came on 19th March 2001 at 22-years old. Aboutrika was then in his fourth season as a pro at Egyptian side Tersana. A very late bloomer in his career, the forward wouldn’t get his second cap till 2004, when Aboutrika scored in the game versus Trinidad and Tobago, making sure he stayed in the setup.

After performing so admirably in his first major international tournament, Aboutrika was rewarded with a place in the team of the tournament. Afterwards, Aboutrika became an integral part of the national setup, amassing 12 caps between the post-06 AFCON and pre-08 tournament. Aboutrika was called up to the 2008 AFCON.

At the 08 AFCON, the maestro played all 6 of his nation’s games, scoring 4 goals with 2 coming in the group and 2 in the knockout rounds; with 1 being the winning goal (and only goal) in the final versus Cameroon.

He scored the winning goal in two consecutive AFCON finals, and by this point, Aboutrika was already an Egyptian icon. While he wasn’t voted player of the tournament, Aboutrika was named in another team of the tournament.

Next was the 2009 Confederations Cup, where the attacker played all 3 of his nation’s games as Egypt exited in the group stage. Despite a poor collective performance, Aboutrika was named in the team of the tournament for his individual performance.

His last international tournament was the 2012 Olympic games, where he captained the U-23 team to the QF stage. Playing in the forward line of a 4-3-3, Aboutrika netted 2 goals in 4 starts in an impressive display. His last senior international cap came in November 2013 at the age of 35. A one-time African footballer of the year, Aboutrika was a fantastic finisher with immense composure. Although a set-piece specialist, most of his goals came as a result of great positioning, and Aboutrika had poacher-like instincts.

Proficient with both feet and blessed with powerful long shots, Aboutrika ranks third in Al Ahly’s top goalscorers of all-time (126).

2. Mohamed Salah
Position: Forward
Caps: 71. Goals: 45
Mohamed Salah isn’t the most successful footballer to have represented The Pharaohs, but he is the most talented. His senior international debut came on the 3rd of September 2011 at 19-years old. This was during the forward’s third season as a pro at Egyptian side Al Mokawloon. His first goal for Egypt came soon after, during his second cap versus Niger. After 2 seasons of consistent senior football, Salah was called up to represent Egypt at the 2012 Olympics football tournament.

3. Ahmed Hassan
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger

Caps: 184. Goals: 33
Egypt’s most capped player of all-time, as well as the most capped player from Africa, Ahmed Hassan’s legacy stems from his longevity in the international game.

4. Hossam Hassan
Position: Striker

Caps: 176. Goals: 68
The Pharaohs’ top scorer of all-time, Hossam Hassan is a legend in Egypt due to prolifically scoring for Egypt as well as the nation’s two biggest sides, Al Ahly and Zamalek. His senior international debut came on September 10th 1985 at the age of 19- Hassan was in his second season as a pro at Egyptian giants Al Ahly at the time.

5. Essam El Hadary
Position: Goalkeeper

Caps: 159
Egypt’s most-capped goalkeeper and third-most-capped player of all-time, Essam El Hadary was the Pharaohs’ last line of defence for over 20 years.

His senior international debut came on 25th March 1996 at the age of 23- El Hadary was in his third season as a pro at Egyptian side Damietta. An occasional member of the national team in the first year, the shotstopper began to appear more regularly in 1997, earning 9 caps that year after only 2 in the previous year.

1. Henri Camara
Position: Striker
Caps: 99. Goals: 29

Senegal’s highest goalscorer of all-time, Henri Camara was part of the golden generation of the early 2000s who shocked the continent first, before surprising the world afterwards.

2. Sadio Mane
Position: Winger / Forward
Caps: 79. Goals: 26

Arguably the most talented Senegalese footballer of all-time, Sadio Mane is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world. His senior international debut came on 25th May 2012 at the age of 20; Mane was then only in his first season as a pro at French side FC Metz.

3. Papa Bouba Diop
Position: Defensive Midfielder / Centre back

Caps: 63

Goals: 11

An underrated player during his prime, Papa Bouba Diop was the box-to-box dynamo who drove the national team forward on the biggest stages. His senior international debut came on the 16th June 2001 at 23-years old. Diop was then in his fifth season as a pro, and first at Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax.

4. El Hadji Diouf
Position: Winger / Forward

Caps: 70. Goals: 24
The superstar playmaker of the prodigious Lions team of the early 2000s, El-Hadji Diouf’s off-the-field antics later on in his career have put a black mark on how good he actually was as a player. Diouf’s senior international debut came on the 23rd April 2000 at 19-years old.

5. Aliou Cisse
Position: Midfielder / Defender

Caps: 35

The leader of the national team during his playing days and current manager of the Senegalese national team, Aliou Cisse’s mentality has served him well throughout his career. His senior international debut came in 1999 during Cisse’s fifth season as a pro and first at French giants Paris Saint-Germain; he was 22-years old at the time.
