EFCC Closes Case Against Oronsaye Stephen After Calling 21 Witnesses by Ebubu8: 8:49pm On Feb 03, 2022
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, closed its case against a former Head of Service, Stephen Oronsaye, standing trial over charges bordering on alleged stealing and obtaining money by false pretence before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The anti-graft agency closed its case against the former Head of Service after calling 21 witnesses and tendering several documents.

The 21st prosecution witness (PW21), Mr Umar Abba Tilde, a Compliance Officer with Zenith Bank Plc, told the Court on Thursday that he could not ascertain whether Oronsaye ever made an endorsement for withdrawal from the accounts, as he was, at no time a signatory to the Federal Pension Accounts where alleged fraud was perpetrated.

Led in evidence by EFCC lawyer, Mr Oluwaleke Atolagbe, the banker revealed that two withdrawals, N161, 472, 00 million and N28, 375, 000 were transferred from a pension account to a company on July 6, and July 7, 2010, respectively.

The witness further told the court that a letter of August 24, 2010, signed by Oronsaye as the then Head of Service of the Federation instructed the bank that all e-payments must henceforth have final endorsement from the office.

However, under cross-examination by Mr Joe Agi (SAN), lead counsel to Orosanye, the witness said that the former Head of Service did not sign the mandate for the two transfers made in 2010, adding that Dr Shuiab Sani Teidi, Mrs Eu Chide, Mohammed Kaltung Ahmed, Hassan Mohammed and Attah Danladi were the signatories to the accounts.

The witness, who was the last called by the prosecution before closing its case, admitted that he was in the Kano branch of the bank when the two transfers were made and would not know if Oronsaye ever made any endorsement.

After the prosecution announced the closure of its case against Oronsaye, Counsel to the former Head of Service, Joe Agi (SAN) applied for an adjournment to enable him to open his defence with only two witnesses.

The court subsequently adjourned till March 9 and 10, 2022 for Oronsaye to open his defence.

embarassed They have collected their share of the loot and hurriedly closed the case. The corrupt organization turned a blind eye after clearly witnessing the obvious case of money laundering below and they expect people to take them seriously.

"The anti-graft agency closed its case against the former Head of Service after calling 21 witnesses and tendering several document."

Total waste of 21 witnesses, documents, court hearing, and tax payers money.

Make EFCC swear say them never cut their own cake give them.

cardoctor:
No be naija we dey?
Will you go and steal and let us see how far wink
Many of you will learn the hard way las las.

This case has been on for like 10 gruelling years for Mr Oronsanye and his nuclear family and so far he is yet to get a respite , especially with the conviction of Maina and admittance of the exhibit that proved that Maina shared part of the pension funds he stole with Mr Oronsanye, he is likely going to end up in jail convicted like Maina and Farouk Lawan.

This was a man who had a successful career in the private sector and joined the Federal service from the top and within a short period became the Head of Service. He obviously "knows people " like we say in local parlance so it would have gone to his head that, sebi this is Nigeria, if you know people, you can do and do.

This fallacy has killed a lot of people and it's just foolishness that makes anyone who wants to steal or break the law think he or she will do it and will get away with it. If you have anyone telling you that nonsense that "this is Nigeria ", flee from him or her before he turns you into Maina, Oronsanye, Farouk Lawan, Rickey Tarfa and other disgraced personalities.

When you go and do laulau and break the law, it may just be one person who will insist that you are not getting away and when the poop hits the fan and your illegitimate action hits the fan, people who you think you know and thought should back you when you break the law, will abandon you.

Where are all those milling around him, Oronsanye then? Where are those 'powerful ' people, political leaders, contractors, captains of industry, his Oba, alumni, etc who must have recieved some big favour or the other from him when he was the No 1 civil servant in the land?

Where are they now that his poop has hit the fan? I hope his disgrace will teach others out there that there's nothing like " this is Nigeria " , only permanent interest.

Don't join them to break the law and decieve yourself that this is Nigeria. If you do, your own disgrace will be more than that of Oronsanye and co.

ignorance. Closed case means they are done with their own part of the prosecution. Defence lawyer will start his.

go and educate yourself man and stop exposing your ignorance. "Close case" in law is not what you think it is. When a prosecutor is done with his prosecution, he closes his case for the defence lawyer to start his. This is the best layman's explanation i can give. Note, i'm not a lawyer.

Comprehension is really a problem.

The headline says that the EFCC has closed its case … meaning the lawyer prosecuting has finished presenting his witnesses. Now it is the turn for the defense to make their own case!

It doesn’t mean the TRIAL IS CONCLUDED

Illiterate. Closing a case is different from dropping charges. If they have closed their case, it means they have finished presenting their evidence, left for the defence lawyers to open their own defence by providing contrary evidence.
