Priest Angrily Bans Igbo Songs In Church.

The Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa Gberigbe in Ikorodu, Lagos, Rev. Fr. James Anelu has banned Igbo songs and choruses in his Church.

The Priest who angrily stopped a soul lifting chorus during the second collection said the Igbos cannot keep dominating other people even in his Church.

He sighted the case of his Benin Diocese where Igbos dominate to the point of becoming the Bishop in person of Akubueze.

Rev Fr Anelu said that the spirit of God recognises only languages indigenous to that geographical location.

On saying this, the whole congregation went up in tumultuous uproar, leading to abrupt dismissal as people massively worked out of the mass.

Yoruba and middle belt
Sorry to disagree with you bro.

Yorubas I know attend mostly Christ Apostolic Church, Celestial Church and other Pentecostal Churches owned and managed by their people.

Come to Ibadan here, majority of Catholic and Anglican worshippers are Igbos.

I knew this because one Catholic Church we used to fetch free water then in Ibadan had mostly Igbos and few other tribes as congregants. Yorubas there were very few.

Igbos even have their own Anglican Church in Eko-Bola close to Dugbe, Ibadan.

I think that was the same scenario in Lagos.

Even Middlebeltans attend Catholic more but the most dominating denomination among them is the first church that started in their locality.

Crosscheck your fact very well bro.

I doubt the veracity of this news.
But if it is true, I'll say the priest is not only too naive but sadly too tribalistic to even be a priest.

If you're Catholic and have been one for the last forty years, you'll remember a time when all masses were said in Latin. And all hymns in English.
However, in the early 2000s, there appeared to have been a conscious attempt to infuse local elements into the church.

Masses were then said in Tivi, in Efik and in Hausa.
Hymns were sung in Esan, in Igbo and in Kanuri.
And Credos were chanted in Kalabari, in nupe and Kanuri.

Now the thing that make it look like there is domination is this.

- Igbos tends to travel a lot and naturally, they'd sing their songs in these places they go to.

- and while some other tribes are stuck in the 90s — with local songs composed by Irish priests and nuns, there have been big attempt by igbo composers like Jude Nnam to write their own story and push their own melody.

- and on numbers, it's like saying The Yorubas are trynna dominate aladura.

E no make sense.
