Good morning great members of this section. I humbly appeal to the CarTalk Gurus and Experts to share thoughts on this topic

I have an Elantra '09 I got April last year, well used and maintained. No issues whatsoever, In fact my mechanic would always say that I treat the vehicle like a new housewife.

Around December last year, I noticed that it went off while I was in traffic. First it was a one-time experience, then after some days it began to re-occur periodically, as much as twice or thrice in a day. Of course, this usually happens when the brake is depressed, it would jerk and then pick up and some other times it would jerk and then go off.

I drive with my AC on always. Once when I had the AC off, I noticed that this did not happen till I got back home. However, I do not want to link this occurrence with the AC.

Since that first occurrence till date, I have had the ignition coils and complete fuel pump (with filter and guage) changed and cleaned the injector, as advised by my mechanic. The problem persists.

It is frustrating to have your vehicle behave this way unusually. I hate vehicle issues whatsoever. I need expert opinions and thoughts on this PLEASE !!!

Thanks

Have you done proper scan and diagnoses? Have you check the fuse box? You might also need to change the coil but try and diagnose extensively first.

Thank you.

I have changed the coils, all four of them. The mechanic said the scan was not showing anything at the last check.

There has been no mention of fuse or fuse box at all in all the checks and repair works carried out so far though. I'll take note of that. Let me know if you have any recommended automech

Thank you once again

Brake and quench is most often linked with MAF and throttle body along with air filter. Scan first and post codes , then Clean throttle body with carb cleaner, change air filter and do a relearn if possible and test drive

If you're in Lagos check for check Mecho auto tech. You can Google for their contact and address. They are they best in town.

Since, it only occurs when the AC is powered ON, it may have to do with the load the AC mounts on the motor.
To be certain, drive your regular routine without the AC for some days, sorry but it's better than just doing other maintenance that doesn't correlate.
If the engine doesn't stall, except when the AC kicks in, and at red light then you have your answer - Load/Power.

Okay Zidoh, thank you very much sir! I am in Ogun state but I do not mind coming to Lagos if it guarantees a genuine solution. Thanks for your input sir.

Thank you Nurey. Like I said earlier, the mechanic said the last scan which was done after changing the coils didn't show anything significant and I just took his word for it. However, I am now going to ask for another scan and copy the codes myself. Other things you mentioned have also been noted sir and I'll ensure they are checked as well. Thank you once again!

Thank you SamuelLoch. What could probably be the cause for a Load/Power problem and what solution would you perhaps recommend for a Load/Power problem?

Am having the same problem, it usually jerk and off when you are low on throttle like when you go off road and have to go slow. The scan result showed "Hyundai P0231 Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit Low" , I have changed the complete fuel pump but the problem persists, the complete coil too have been changed but no improvement yet.

Try and do this first before giving your vehicle to mech that will cause more damage!
You may have a clogged air filter.

Hi Zarathustra, didn't think I'd say this but it feels a bit good finding someone with a similar issue. I'm intending to come to Lagos based on some thoughts and recommendations received. If you're in Lagos maybe we can find a solution together. Cheers!

Thanks Manuella4ace, that's exactly why I had to bring the issue here. I haven't had any other mech as much as examine this vehicle and if I am bringing it to Lagos then I want to be sure the person comes highly recommended and knows exactly what to do.

I would advise tomorrow, open your bonnet unclip you air box (I marked with this) and bring out the air filter, and try to see if dust has blocked, which is choking you car , because without air, fuel won't burn and engine will go off.

Thank you again Manuella4ace. I think this has been done already though but I will give more attention to it now. I appreciate

Run a diagnosis by scanning your car ECU, the code generated will tell you the actual problem. All these buying of fuel pump, changing of coils, cleaning of air filter bla bla are just trial & error and waste of money, energy and time.

You would need a scan tool that can run live data.oncee its plugged in, select the systems you want to see how they are operating, put on your ac and your full lights, drive around and observe. Best is you either drive while someone with an understanding of live data from a scanner observes the values from systems such as your maf, fuel pump, and others.

This is an isolated problem, i doubt scanner can detect it when its not happening since it would start immediately you restart your vehicle after it goes off. It could also be a fuse or a relay malfunction as a result of corrosion which affects contacts once a while.

You'll need someone good at diagnosis and vehicle electronics to help detect. Best thing is to leave the car with the person for like a day or two to drive around with it. When it happens to such a person on the way, at that point he/she can determine where the problem is coming from. My own 2 cents

Thank you very much kernniejay. The waste of money, energy and time is exactly why I added the word FRUSTRATING to the topic. I have parked the car now for about a week and I'm not moving it until I am sure it's for a permanent solution.

Thank you Joehigashi. Is there any one you can strongly recommend on this forum or in Lagos pls?

This code indicates that there is a power supply malfunction to the fuel pump.

Have you checked the fuel pump relay and electrical connections?

Okay then. I wish you the best and hope you get an expert's solution

I've decided to take mine to Lagos next week, have it scanned and then proceed from there.
