We have a surname that is not Nigerian or African.

In the UK when my sister applied for a job and got called for thr job interview they mentioned to her that they thought she was not African her name.
That was the first decent job she got.
But i think things have changed now with more migrants in UK and valuable services they render.
Give Nigerians a chance and they will excel. Nigerias problem is we spend so much energy time n money to hate each other or surpress each other because of tribe, religion or political affiliation

You for try read wetin him write before you comment o

they equally asked him of his origin (Nigeria) when they could not pronounce the name. you should be smarter than this. They relate the name to where he came from n immediately they rejected him. If this guy was from a more serious n well behave country, he could not have issues with them.

It is not about Nigeria, it is about your tribal name so difficult to pronounce.
I am Igbo but i find names of Edo/benin, urhobo/isoko, Tiv and some Ijaw name difficult to pronounce.

They find yourrs difficult too.

I have being using my IGBO last name since i was born in East london for more than 30 year I had the same problem right from the very first day in college, at one point it didn't bother me anymore. There is no way i am changing my last name, to what? Williams? Hosford? Norman? No way!

When I changed it ones or twice to an English translation "Kings" everything went smoothly until i changed it back grin since then i thought bollocks! to them! The pakis and Turks are using their muslim names like Khan, Uzgur, Tarik, Osman, mohamed and Chakrabati so what is wrong with using mine. Fork em!

But sometimes they reject people for jobs not because of their last names but because they are born in nigeria or holds a nigerian nationality sadly. Even Ghanians with their Ghanian last names still get decent jobs...

But i think things has changed in recent years people are employed now in cities regardless of their last names or country of origin..

In Wales it might be different because they are still sort of backwards. Even Welsh people are sometimes discriminated by The English, the English are discriminated by the Scots.

Are you from edo state?

Back to your question
Your surname, first name, last name will not denial you the authorization to apply for a visa for any country...

The consular is not required to learn how to pronounce your name... He or she only need to confirm the names on your visa application tally with your passport...

Then on your own part...as long as you can speak English and express your self... You have got no issue...

When you land...if you want, you can decide to give yourself an official English...

It's a marra of choice tho

Goodluck

No I'm not from Edo.
Thank you sir.

This name changing y'all are talking about,is it changing it officially on all documents or just changing the name you tell people you bear?

If you have an Oyinbo friend, tell him/her to pronounce:
Oghogho (edo name)
Akpenvwoghene (Urhobo name)
Anyikamba (Igbo name)
Mowaninuolaoluwa (Yoruba name)

Tell me how they won't wanna avoid such names.

Forget about it, you are not hiding behind anything, nothing acquired in this world is natural about you, your name was given to you by someone: your parent. So you can change that if you feel it is constituting a cultural barrier for you in your new environment. You don't have to bear an English name to make your name pronounceable to an English man. What of changing your name to "Tope"? You will be surprised how a Briton will pronounce "Tope" even better than a Yoruba guy.

Nope.

But if you have an ethnic name, you would probably not be called. Unless the position is quite specialist and you have a PhD with a rich experience.

After I encountered Similar experience, I give out my name depending on the environment I find myself but to be candid, my English name is the most popular one for now. Anytime people who are not from my side wants to pronounce my main name, they pronounced it as if they've lost four teeth.
