oglalasioux: That's because in that period, we were still replacing the British in all sectors, including the police (the last British Nigerian police force man retired in 1979) That's why they all looked so young. It was because they were . We did not have enough trained people at independence (14 years ago at the time of the video) that Balewa in his independence speech asked for the Brits to stay back. That we now have 'old' sergeants has a lot to do with the fact that we have now trained enough people. Infact when we got independence, we did not have enough senior officers at all levels...so people were rapidly promoted. That's why you had someone being a general in his thirties like Gowon. The 1966 coup and civil war also reduced numbers drastically. |

treatise: Not in 1974.
Bubu did not become minister till 1977/8. In 1974, there was no ministry of petroleum resurces...there was a Department of Petroluem resources and the NNOC , precusor of NNPC. The ministry came later |

Racoon: Problem with automotive industry then was they were basically assembly plants. The oil crash of 1981 meant that there was not enough dollars to import said parts to Nigeria. Then Ajaokuta was not finished on time, plus we don't and still don't have enough small scale manufacturers of the tiny parts and components needed in each car. (a big problem from the word go...but so long as we had the dollars, it could be overlooked) |

All this government know is to look for things that happened in the past to justify their present stupidity and incompetence. |

treatise: Well, OP said 1974, so if it is 1974, it has to be...especially as OP has not changed the title. I know you guys don't like Buhari, I don't myself, and I don't regard him as a good leader, but this tendency to regard him as some sort of bogeyman has to stop. If you want to blame Buhari for fuel scarcity in 1974, a good two years before he became petrol minister, then we can also blame Obasanjo, Gowon, IBB, Abacha and GEJ for all the scarcities that took place in their time. Plus, fuel scarcity happens because the petroleum industry is not allowed to operate at a profit. And has not been since subsides were brought in in 1973. Buhari is a bad leader for perpetuating, and helping to perpetuate, a system of bad economics that has been in place for decades. 1 Like |

A final word on this thread As usual, people miss the point why the long lines were there...and it has a lot to do with one reason In 1973,subsides were brought in. To help the poor....at the expense of the petroleum industry. 1974, queues result. Now in 2022, we are and have been reaping the 'benefit' of subsides...periodic fuel scarcity. Removing fuel subsidy would end periodic scarcites, but since it also means increased food prices, and so forth, Nigerians don't want it. But at the same time , our economy gets damaged. |

At 165 per litre there is fuel scarcity. The queues did not start now. Just crazy this time around. December and at intervals last year there were long queues for petrol. No fuel subsidy high prices |
