i'm planning on studying computer science in unilorin but it seems the public consensus is that computer science taught in nigeria university is outdated so is it worth the money and time to still study it.
I love computer science but i'm mainly doing it for the money and i'm currently learning python so is it worth going to study it in the university to get the certificate or being self-taught is better

Computer Science in public most unis in Nigeria is just maths in disguise, and practical practice is non existent. You'll have to teach yourself most things. But it's a good degree to have especially if you consider moving abroad.

grin grin grin grin, For areas like mechanical engineering, or other skills that are physical, still need University, but Software, A.I, cloud computing, no need. cheesy cheesy cheesy kikiki

You can verify it yourself. Check the number of leetcode users online from Nigeria then multiply that number by the number of undergraduates at level 100 to 400 across all Nigerian universities that offer computer science. It's simple stat that can give you a basic overview.

How did u arrive at your 99.9% and 0.1%?

cheesy cheesy, I remember when i did some courses In a Nigerian University XX with a computer science department, they were so scared we might spoil the computer, even when we were typing, we were also scared lol.

And we used mostly Fortran, anyway it was a basic intro, into algorithms and their flow chart, and procedural programming.

Although the environment was so rushed and fearful, i developed interest, one does not really gain anything in such a tense atmosphere, online tutorials, having my personal computer, and the ease of access coupled with self Study definitely made me a professional.

There are so many online resources, free and paid, i recommend one should be very observational, and bookmark the resources online.

There are bootcamps, even schools, and places, where one can gain experience, i consider Nigerian universities as sad places and trash.

True talk bro.
Pls can I send you email?

Studying computer science in public UNIVERSITY changed my life but the rules is, you must be ready to develop yourself beyond class room lectures.

Before I graduated I was solving my lecturers system problemz

Continue to learn programing properly while you do the degree. Yes outdated but you could still pick a thing or two. Go into tech for the right reasons, to solve problems, when you do relevance will follow and for sure money will go with the relevance

This kind of thread has always filled the air.
I teach computer Science in a public institution, my advice is,
Just like teaching someone to drive a car, you learn in a field of a less busy road. To drive from Lagos to Owerri or ibaban is your choice.

The Nigerian university will definitely give you the science, and a touch of core application.
You have to keep practicing by solving problems.

If you are doing it for the money, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Yes there is presently a lot of money in Tech, but the most successful folks are motivated by things other than money.

I got into tech long ago. Many years before it started hitting the spot light locally. My motivation then (and now) is to solve problems whether I make a buck or not. I ha e done several personal projects purely for the fun of it and wanting to know how certain things work.
Stop confusing the young man. Money is a great motivation to get an education or to learn a skill.
If you are not motivated by money, others are.
I wake up every morning thinking of how much I would make that is my deal.

My brother that is a Suicide mission, Nigerian lecturers are sadistic, wicked for absolutely nothing, full of themselves, some are never willing to lend a helping hand especially if you are doing engineering that is where you will see their height of wickedness, all because of theoretical knowledge. What is coming for them is worse than they ever thought bunch of mofos.

You can go the self thought route it is hard, rough and long enduring but if you can make it through the night there's a brighter day.

Forget about tutorials for tools and frameworks focus on leetcode. DSA, systems design and competitive programming. You can learn the tools and stacks in final year. Thats what I will do if I were you.

Does leetcode require prior knowledge of any programming language ?

99.9 percent have never heard of leetcode the remaining half of the 0.1 percent that have heard cant even solve the easy questions there. Leetcode is fucking hard. The earlier the better.

I've just signed up on leetcode and there seem to be different categories of questions. Can you point me in the right direction? Also, which language did you use when you were starting out?

All the listed categories are important honestly. You should spread it across and do multiple per day.

That's how computer science is anywhere in the world, not just in Nigeria, and that's because computer science really is maths in disguise - its inventors were all mathematicians, and its prime purpose is the study of the Lambda Calculus. The entire point of studying the subject is to learn concepts that transcend particular languages and platforms, something many commenters fail to recognize. Languages, databases and operating systems come and go, but what stays constant between them are the underlying ideas, which are what any good computer science course will try to teach.

OP, by all means hone your practical skills on sites like HackerRank and LeetCode, but don't confuse being able to regurgitate memorized solutions to existing problems with the ability to display insight into underlying issues, and don't expect to go into the software field using only a single programming language throughout your career, no matter how popular it might be at the time. If your main motivation is money, think hard about whether that will be enough to power you through decades of unending study and skill acquisition, because nobody is going to pay you huge sums of money to sit on your oars and stagnate as new platforms, problems and toolsets come into the market. This is not the right career for those motivated only by greed.
