The Prime Minister has just announced sanctions on five Russian banks.

Boris Johnson has said that he will be prepared to use sanctions against Russia using "new and unprecedented powers".

He announces sanctions on five Russian banks: Rossiayaz Bank, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and Black Sea Bank.

Sanctions are also being imposed on three "very high net worth individuals"

Boris Johnson in the Commons: The UK must brace itself

Johnson says MPs will struggle to contemplate how in the year 2022 a national leader might calmly and deliberately plot the destruction of a peaceful neighbour.

The Prime Minister said: "Yet the evidence in his own words suggests that is exactly what President Putin is doing".

Johnson added that the UK must brace itself for the next possible stages of Putin's plan.

Boris Johnson in the commons: Putin's plan must fail

MPs in the Commons today agreed when the Prime Minister said that "the resolve of the UK to defend our Nato allies is absolute and immovable".

Johnson said: "We cannot tell what will happen in the days ahead but we should steel ourselves for a protracted crisis the UK will meet this challenge side by side with our allies."

He says that perseverance, unity are needed to resolve this, and says that: "Our thoughts should turn to our gallant Ukrainian friends who threaten no one, who ask for nothing except to live in peace and freedom," he says.

Johnson ends his statement by saying: "Whatever happens Britain will not waiver in our resolve."

PM on the Champions League final

Boris Johnson says there's "no chance of holding football tournaments" in Russia.

This suggests he may back the country being stripped of hosting this year's Champions League final.

It is due to be held on 28 May in Saint Petersburg.

Estonia’s President ‘stands united with Ukraine’

Estonia’s President, Alar Karis, who met the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in Kyiv today has said.

“We stand united with Ukraine. We will not walk away. We will continue to support you in every possible way.

“I praise the Ukrainian leaders who, despite constant provocations, remain calm and express willingness to solve this conflict peacefully.

“Russia must end the intolerable provocations and stop fuelling the conflict, which has been ongoing for eight years. Moscow should immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Ukraine’s territory and its immediate vicinity.

"We strongly condemn all military and hybrid actions against Ukraine. We regret that despite diplomatic efforts, there are no signs of willingness to de-escalate – quite the opposite, [with] the buildup of Russian forces continues, including in Belarus.

“I align myself with everyone who wishes we had a way to secure peace through the force of diplomacy and dialogue.”
