Starmer calls for full set of sanctions now

Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer called yesterday a “dark day” for the world. He also said we must “all stand firm in our support of Ukraine”.

“There can be no excuses for Russia’s actions”, he says.

Starmer today said he welcomes the sanctions announced which were announced, but claims “we must be prepared to go further”.

Starmer says: UK must end oligarch impunity

Keir Starmer has said that he welcomes the sanctions announced by the government, but claims it must also do more.

The Labour leader says the UK must also "get its own house in order", saying it has failed to stop the flow of Russian finance into the country.

"This must be a turning point," and adds that "oligarch impunity" must end, with anti-money laundering laws enforced.

Theresa May: Defending democracy

Former Conservative Prime Minster Theresa May has welcomed Johnson's statement and his "unwavering support" for Ukrainian sovereignty.

In her speech in Commons today, she said that the battle we now face is "the defence of democracy itself".

Estonia’s President ‘stands united with Ukraine’ (Continued…)

Estonia’s President, Alar Karis, continued to say: “Indeed, it is a decisive moment in European history. President Putin will answer to future generations for his violent actions. As European and western leaders, we also have the responsibility to step up to our values [and] our commitment to a Europe that is united and at peace. We regret every single life lost.

“It is our duty to protect our common values and the democracy we all helped to build. A threat to Ukraine is a threat to the security of Europe.

The minimum we can do is to step up our practical support to Ukraine, which Estonia has done and will continue to do. In the EU, we will deliver on a massive package of sanctions and do so swiftly and decisively. But most importantly we must keep the door to EU and Nato open for Ukraine and we must have concrete next steps for further cooperation and integration.

“We know you will continue to value democracy and remain on the path of reforms. Eventually we will welcome you as the member of the European Union – you belong in Europe.

“We support Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We remain fully committed to the policy of non-recognition of illegal annexation of Ukraine’s territories. Ukraine has a right to defend its borders and independence and we continue helping Ukraine to build its military capabilities to stand against the aggression.”

Hungary is deploying some troops near the Ukrainian border as the defence ministry said this is partly in preparation for humanitarian tasks.

However, Hungary is the first to send in troops, as so far none of the NATO allies have done so

Instead, NATO allies have provided military assistance like supplying defensive weapons and helping to train Ukrainian forces.

Swedish PM ‘STRONGLY condemns Russia’s actions’

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said in a press conference today that “Sweden strongly condemns Russia’s actions.”

The responsibility for escalating crisis “falls solely on the Russian political leadership.”

“Ukraine is an independent country with the same right to make its own choices as all European countries. When that right is violated, it will be met with a clear European response and that will come during the day,” Andersson added.

The Swedish government is holding a meeting today to decide whether to send an additional SEK 20 million (approximately £2 million) to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine.

Possible EU sanctions

Foreign ministers of EU member states are meeting this afternoon, in regards to the growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

In order for the EU to implement sanctions, the proposals will need to gather unanimous support from the member states.

The two EU institutional leaders suggest the package with the sanctions will contain the following proposals:

°to target those who were involved in the illegal decision

°to target banks that are financing Russian military and other operations in those territories.

°to target the ability of the Russian state and government to access the EU’s capital and financial markets and services, to limit the financing of escalatory and aggressive policies.

°to target trade from the two Russian-controlled territories to and from the EU, to ensure that those responsible clearly feel the economic consequences of their illegal and aggressive actions.

Sajid Javid threatens Putin with war if SINGLE Russian soldier sets foot in Nato territory

Boris Johnson now believes Putin is "bent on a full-scale invasion of Ukraine" after Russian tanks rolled across the border last night.

He is unveiling a package of economic sanctions in the Commons this lunchtime to sting the Kremlin aggressors.

Health Secretary Mr Javid compared the tensions to the Cuban Missile Crisis when the world teetered on the brink of nuclear conflict during the Cold War.

Although Ukraine is not a Nato member, he warned that encroachment into an alliance country would trigger a military response.

Mr Javid told GMB: "If a single Russian soldier's foot enters Nato territory - it will be war with all of Nato.

"Britain has already deployed soldiers to Nato's eastern flank in bordering countries such as Estonia.
