The conflict did not start with the 2014 invasion of Crimea. The crisis started with the brake up of the Soviet Union in 1989. The US and Russia had lots of agreements in order to douse the tension of the cold war. Russia had Warsaw Pact comprising of states under the influence of the former Soviet Union, while NATO had its members of the western Alliance led by USA. For Russia to allow the unification of Germany and withdrawal of Russian troops from the former Soviet states, there were agreements not to expand NATO eastwards. After all NATO was created principally because of Russia. So the Russians thought that with the ending of the cold war, the need for NATO would not be needed anymore. But what happened? NATO kept expanding until it is now almost at Russia's borders.

Russia felt the need to annex Crimea, because it felt Crimeans are ethnic Russians and for most of their history had been part of Russia. The people themselves wanted to join Russia. After the 2014 revolution that saw the overthrow of the Russian backed government, the people of Crimea were not comfortable being influence by a US backed government.
Even if Russia did not annex Crimea, Ukraine will still descend into a protracted civil war as the country is heavily divided between the people who support Russia and those that support the West.
