Russia red line for Ukraine is joining NATO if you read between the lines. I do not believe Russia wants occupy Ukraine that is not possible any more as it is not 1800. Russia has moved in into where they wanted which is two new region of Ukraine, they have been there before now but by proxy now they are fully on ground. All these would have been resolved if Ukraine has granted those region the kind of autonomy they wanted, and Russia would not even have the thought of annexing them. But there has been a power vacuum there since 2105 and Russia has taken the advantage of that.

If the whole thing stops Russia has already won because those two regions are not going back to Ukraine. In few years there will be referendum and they will join Russia officially like Crimea. It is all west propaganda that they want to invade Ukraine. They have have recognized those two places as independent states and provide military support for them as a friendly nations which is acceptable under the international law just like Ukraine is asking for help from others as well.

Europe and Ukraine had given up a lot to make Russia comfortable that it will never be a vessel state to the United States.

They gave up their EU membership proposal, gave up their nuclear weapons, gave up their economy to be controlled by Russia business men..

Putin has always said that Ukraine is not a country and it's supposed to be part of Russia, So this is what this is about.
