When I first came here, I met many great writers, many of whom I've made friends with. So, you will understand how I always wanted their success because I'm gingered too.
Many of those guys are no longer writing or tired of writing or not as freaked about it as before.
Many posted free books here because they wanted acceptance. And Nairaland gave that.

But soon they realise that the views, comments, and likes don't convert to money. The confidence just keeps crashing down.

Many of these guys give up. Even the new crop of writers did.

I decided to build Writertain Publishers because of this. But it's not easy. Finances and all. Writing is hard especially when you need money and fame to survive.
But we mustn't give up. I know friends that haven't touched a story to write in a long time because of the trouble at ever turn.

So, I'm asking you.

How are you, mentally?
Let's talk before this desire eats you up.

Well, I think I'll object to that. Sorry for the double quote. I don't feel accepted on Nairaland. They're all making me invincible unless I go calling them. Which is kinda frustrating. But I'm fine. And yeah, about what you said about confidence... you're so right. There was a time I gave up completely on writing. Then I was like ‘what's the point?’ It was depressing staying without holding a pen as at that time. Guess that's why it didn't take me long before I got back up.

I don't think you understand what divepen1 is driving at. You see as a writer, all you ever wish is to someday be under the spotlight with one of your books. And the denial of this in the real world, is what makes writers turn to freelancing.

Tell you what, ghostwriting to me is an advanced form of slavery. Imagine writing a bestseller for a client and earning peanuts. Consider what that would do to the supposed writer

You're really right. A true advanced form of slavery. I can't write a really selling piece and end up not taking the credit. I'm going to feel really empty embarassed Like I've done nothing.

Hi! I need someone to link me up. I'm a writer, but clients seem to be scarce. Some of the few that manages to contact me for work are not ready to make good payment.

Good afternoon great minds
It took me a long time to get back to my first love (writing), low self esteem was the reason for this, after so many years and I really am back.
Please tell me how to fastening improvements worthy enough for the limelight .
Thanks

Oh... I think you're missing my point. I don't mean I want to claim ownership of ghostwritten books.
I'm saying once the book is gone, you don't have anything to do with it.

So, the big joy is to write for yourself and get the fame or whatever satisfaction worth deriving.
That's why I didn't talk about the money because I agree there are people making cool cash from freelancing.

Please sir, i cc’d you on a thread, please look into it please

Yeah, its really not easy... I recall starting a story here on NairaLand, with my other account..The masked love if I could recall correctly.
The comments and positive vibes from my readers were there..I was encouraged and intrigued to write on...but these positive vibes, encouragements and intrusion was rattled by the fact that this does not help me financially...I write for hobbies, it's my passion but since it is time-demanding and time is money, I kind of find it a bit less rewarding.
Take it or leave it, an average Nigerian is committed and concerned only with things that will fetch him money.
So as rightly stated by Divipen..the lack of financial rewards to the writers is a contributing factor.

Additionally, with the intense hardship, evils and countless woes that betides the citizens of the nation in the past few years, i doubt if there will be anyone interested read stories here on nairaland, supposing a writer writes out of enthusiasm, cos we're all distracted and depressed by the hardships and happenings in our society...just speculating, though.

I don't agree... People read when they are down, people read when they are happy. People will always read, even if we are at war. I have had countless people reach out to me privately to tell me how my stories help them when they are down/depressed.

Even if the population of dedicated readers in Nigeria is small (compared to a country like America), the readers are always there, yearning for something new to read.

The problem is with the readers not getting compensation for their time...It takes a lot of time to write good stories, so, even the writers that take writing as a hobby will eventually find themselves using up so much of their time to write, and this will affect the work (job) they do to put food on their table.

If only Nairaland can share the income they generate from this section with some of the writers that bring in readers which equals pageviews, then maybe those writers will keep writing.

Money is very important for survival in this world.

They should do ooo. I have a lot of story ideas but end up not writing them cause I don't see the cash coming. Even when you put out your stories to buy, people end up going for the free ones. It's frustrating, really. Sigh...

Yeah, it's quite frustrating. Even if it is 10k a month that a fiction writer makes consistently from his stories, it will still give him the encouragement to keep writing. But most Nigerian fiction writers make nothing from their works...even the ones that make money from their works, it is not consistent.

And those that make money from writing for others don't have fulfillment.

And that's why I wish to travel abroad. Cause I know this country isn't for me...

It's so hard for me to start writing! The pandemic broke my concentration, and now I cannot get it back.
My anxiety doesn't allow me to write everything that comes to my mind. It's so hard!! Did it happen to you as well?

I totally feel what you are saying bro. Its not easy as a creative. Especially if you don't have other income sources. I am just lucky I have other income sources and thus mentally I am Ok. I just keep churning out the stories, praying and planning for the future.

The belief that one day you will blow and then people will discover that you have a long list of body of works and come consume them like ravaging fans also pushes one on.

Was enjoying your Writertain blog turned forum sometime ago. What happened to it?

That's the spirit. E go better na the mantra.

If it helps anyone here, you can write short stories for kids for me at between N24,000 - N40,000 PER STORY of 8000 Words. This is not a one-time gig but is ongoing. Feel free to shoot me a pm if interested. Please, I know everyone here is talented but only really interested in writers that have punctuation, plotting for fiction, and basic grammar down pat. Thanks all.

This is great. I wish I could write children stories.

Guys that can write children stories should take advantage of this.
