And every man works his socks off to become better than others not become their equals.

Forget equality of outcome, equality of opportunities is the only thing that can be strived for (albeit difficult itself), because once one beats the odds and gets a better outcome compared to others, you can't expect his generation to face the same odds. Which means they don't face the same opportunities as others.

In my opinion once America won the cold War, they no longer had to present capitalism as a viable alternative to communism, and things went downhill from there. American capitalism wasn't always like this.
