I dislike the noise of generator. I don't realy like people to know that i'm at home. What specification will you recommend for using solar power only for my computer. |

UncleAyo: The power issue in Ibadan is general, when it comes to power supply Akobo is one of the best place to live in Ib, hang in there and you’ll enjoy stable electricity after it has been fixed. I use MTN lumos and it’s really helping me with my work (web development), if you desperately need power I recommend lumos |

LikeAking: Honestly, this is the best advice. There are people who enjoy constant power, fast internet, good road in their neighborhood and security in this same Nigeria. All you need do is find that the area and relocate. It will save you a lot of headaches and heartaches. 1 Like |

LikeAking: This is what I do but sometimes you change to a location that has history of good light and on getting there, The light stops being as good as every one as described. This has happened to me twice. @Op I have a luminous inverter that lasts me 8 hours ( charging my laptop and powering my two monitors). The light here is not so bad, So most times, The light comes back on before the inverter battery goes low. The last time I ran on generator was a month ago 1 Like |

UncleAyo:Jesus! Abeg o run very far away from those mtn guys, you can get an inverter and a battery, atleast 3 batteries you can make a deal and get each battery for 90k, the inverter may cost 50 to 55k since you'll be mainly powering ur computer, I for talk 1million, but I no know your budget 1 Like |

Terminology you need to get familiar with of you want to dive into Solar Panels: Monocrystalline v Poly Crystalline. I'm not a pro but there seems to be a preference for the monos. Charge Controller: responsible for harnessing the electricity generates by the panels to charge the batteries. MPPT preferred. Inverter: Stand alone vs Grid-tie. Standalone is what is mostly available in the Nigerian market as there is no economic offering for selling excess electricity (generated by your panels) to NEPA Batteries: stores the electricity generated by the panels for later use. I think Gel-based batteries are what most local installers try to push. Again, I'm not a pro so can't advise properly. No matter the cost, get good batteries. Very good ones. You'd not regret it. Panel orientation: Should be south-facing here in Nigeria as we are slightly north of the equator. Don't overlook this. You can maximise charge by properly orienting the panels. I have been on solar for the past 4 months with zero consumption from NEPA. NEPA sent me ₦150k+ estimated bill. Refused to pay and got disconnected. Their father. I have 24 hours uninterrupted electricity although I have had to modulate my consumption. No AC, pressing iron, microwave or boiler (aka electric water heater). And it has been worth every penny. Just intermittent gen use when I want to use energy demanding appliances. 12 Likes 4 Shares |

airsaylongcome:boss abeg, what would you advice? I have a wall fan of 48W and a home theater (I can't remember the power consumption rate) 5 energy saving bulbs A laptop A phone 43" smart TV and A decoder. What solar settings should I go for to stay completely off grid and what would be the total estimate? and a game console |
Re: Please How Did You Solve Your Power Need Without Use Of Generator by airsaylongcome: 3:16pm On Mar 18, 2022 |
uniqUN: The real big drain would be the TV. The sheer size of the TV makes it a power hog. A 1-1.5kva should be sufficient for basic use if you keep TV usage down. My recommended preference would be 3kva but that's a huge cost implication. For me I had an inverter with battery from years ago that cost around 500k to setup (Dollar rate wasn't this terrible). Bought 6 320w panels for total cost of ₦770k which has sustained my entire off-grid during this dry season. But I'm worried about the coming rains. Very worried 2 Likes |
Re: Please How Did You Solve Your Power Need Without Use Of Generator by uniqUN(m): 3:56pm On Mar 18, 2022 |
airsaylongcome:Thanks for the feedback boss. I'm not much of a TV person. I mostly only use it during weekends. I can cut it down if 1.5kva can serve me well. But how many batteries and panels do you think can work with that? Judging by when you bought yours, it must be more expensive now. Please, do you have the current idea of the estimate or price for the 1.5kva? During the week, I'm not available from 8am to 6pm. So that should cut down my usage. But when you say you are VERY worried about the coming season, abeg shey na whitewalkers dey come ni? I guess that's one of the downsides of solar |
Re: Please How Did You Solve Your Power Need Without Use Of Generator by airsaylongcome: 4:16pm On Mar 18, 2022 |
uniqUN: Lol at the bolded. Naaah, my worry is because the rains will heavily reduce the production of the panels. And ro be honest I would not like to pay a dime for electricity again after enjoying 4 months of zero NEPA bill. During the entire period when petrol was scarce I did not feel it one bit. No need to on Gen and at least 20hrs of uninterrupted electricity. I say 20hrs because on days when there was cloud cover, the inverter dey go off between 3 and 5 for, morning depending on use. My biggest joy is that I always knew that at 6:45am when sufficient sunlight show, I go get electric. Regarding the cost of setting up a 1.5Kva inverter I cannot properly advice as prices have been crazy lately. I have a 4 battery setup. Maybe installers following this thread will be able to advise on present cost. Whatever the cost is, make sure you get really good batteries. E get why 3 Likes |
