Is breadfruit not ukwa?

Mu.nzy14, is this ukwa?
Looks like when it is still fresh from the fall or harvested.

But, normally we leave it to stay for long, to ripe and becomes very soft...So you can preess the flesh to bring out the seed which is the only edible thing in that whole fruit.

So, looking at it from outside, it could be ukwa cheesy

If it is, then it seems like one that is yet to mature, ‘cause there are hardly any seeds in it.

Who knew it could be eaten some other way? cheesy
We learn new things everyday.

There are some parts of Africa that eat cassava leaves, and there are some that eat roasted cassavas.
I even just found out that potato leaves are edible too. undecided

There is an edible cassava with little or no cyanide...Eaten way back in the rural areas..They eat It like yam..Roast and eat with palm oil with utazi and fresh pepper...

My dad gisted me 10years ago..so i was curious and ask them to go get it lets rekindle whatever is associated with it..They did..Went into Orlu town and got the stem...They have it plenty now..The tuber has a pink coating...I believe that's the cassava you are talking about...Northerners chew it raw with kernel.

As for the leaves, yes some said it is...

For nke potato, My benue neighbours do...

Yes..A lot of new things to learn...Life is the only stable teacher,We learn as we live.

It’s breadfruit that has been peeled, boiled and pounded like pounded yam. It’s healthier. High source of fiber too
Delicious looking! undecided

The longer the egg stays in the stew, the more stew flavor it absorbs. Just so you know. cheesy

It's called ukwa oyibo in my village. Low carb. Can be eaten with palm oil sauce or pounded. Just like Cocoyam/yam shaa, but only a bit tastier. Ate it once as a child. Too tasty (maggi-ish) for my liking then.

Ok. So, that one is different from the usual ukwa?
Wow! I’ve never heard of it.

I wonder why it’s not commonly eaten, considering how tasty you say it is.

My dear I don't know why it's not popularly eaten o. At the botany garden in my school then the thing go just litter the whole place and no one touches it. Got to know of it because of my momma. She believed unity in diversity starts from the kitchen. And so we ate all manner of dishes cheesy

Just like how the popular ukwa we know used to litter the village where I did my NYSC. They just sweep and heap them into the nearest bush.

I'm not even sure if the correct Igbo name for the yam-like breadfruit is ukwa oyibo. Just that it was what I was told the name is. It is kind of seedless. Slice off the core and boil. The ripe ones taste like sweet potato.

Jackfruit, the one I was just informed is ukwa oyibo/bekee has edible seeds. The seeds are larger just like you described

Ukwa is instead a different specie of breadfruit called Treculia Africana. Typically larger than the breadfruit used in the previous posting. undecided

P.S. There are many different varieties of breadfruit out there. Some seedless, others obviously not. undecided

Smh...which aru? I ga araputa kwa onwe gi ebe a o... grin ha nwere ike ga checkia ma i wu kwa Ada Igbo na VAR... grin grin

That is how Ukwa is handled na...You carry the fruit from it's tree where it will fall on it's own when mature, to a safer area where it will stay for days/weeks...To start decaying before the collection of it's seed..which will be washed using empty tomato basket to wash it in the nearby stream if na village or under a running Tap if na town.

I and my cousins did it when we visit village during Christmas way back in the days...Under supervision of late grandma...She has a gigantic ukwa tree she planted when she was married newly..That ukwa tree is more than 70yrs old now...Still fruiting.

Modified!
Kobo did justice with the post up there..That is collection of it's seed after days/weeks of assembling of the fresh fruit...
