Just like the man that sat in the pool of Bethesda, waiting for one Golden opportunity until he successfully spent a better part of his life waiting, it is time for us to walk..

Is it fair? No!! I believe my work deserves 1kper word, but my current client cannot afford that and I understand!

Since there's no available offer, I'm going to enjoy putting my best for what you call “peanuts” till I slowly but surely command a greater pay and find better offers probably higher than yours ( I have a running blog from the “peanuts”)

I would like y’all ‘high-earners’ to stop talking and start teaching, if you can't, we don't wanna hear about it!

Signed
Peanut earners

Yes! That's what I thought! Silence! No one wants to leak their fishing method but shame those resulting to scraps

Typical human behavior! Some of y’all condemning 1.5k words would not mind taking a 50k bank job. I spend zero production cost except my time and maybe fuel, my clients provide every working tools I needed and I made 80k monthly writing 1naira per word.

Was is stressful?? Freaking yeah! But it wasn't more stressful than the regular teaching job and guess what? I worked from home even before covid came and introduced working from home.

I don't know about you, but I would pick getting peanuts that covers my bills while improving myself in an area I enjoy plus I get to work from anywhere I want to be, I can't put in words, the amount of progress I've achieved fr myself with that peanut.

Plus there's room for improvement, my rates are constantly changing, in fact my clients increase my pay without me asking, add bonuses and a lot of other incentives, it's almost like an online workforce and I like it here, cheap pay or not

its hurting to see y’all walk over opportunities that could change the life fr someone because its not standard. Well guess what! Nigeria is a 3rd world country and I can count a million things we are missing out on but should we keep dwelling on that and continue waiting for that Almighty drop or should we pick our tools and start tilling the hard ground before us?

At 2naira per word currently, I make 100k monthly, run a physical business and a blog. No, I'm able to take out needed time fr myself and have a better social life than most of my mates. Plus I've reasonable financial freedom for my age, but it took me a while and that's okay

This isn't to brag, but I think we youths are aiming too high and the ones who seem to get it on first try, is making everyone feel its supposed to be easy.

This guy I encountered with recently, really gave me a close insight to the general mindset of an Average Nigerian youth. We are in a rush and think that we deserve than we actually do!

Its a pity tho, a bird at hand they say; is worth a million in the bush. Please do not by any means settle for less than you deserve! but I would rather you wear out your fingertips over loading cheap articles, than to stand alongside the road waiting for your next meal!

A word is enough for the wise, I retire at this point

The start of this issue is that you called people greedy, I only told you its not greed its knowing your worth. No one is saying we can all make millions. I am not and Ive been writing 5 years. Its not about making millions but about settling for anything. Again I agree that not everyone can start big, but like I said before don't tell people to settle for anything. I have said this to you in my reply twice, everyone has a different destiny. Exactly what you claim now. Your time and mine are not the same, doesn't mean that you call everyone greedy for refusing to start small. Your initial post was titled the greed of Nairaland writers. Which again I say is wrong. It is completely wrong to say because another person isn't willing to start with a low pay the person is automatically greedy.

Your point is that we can't all start the same and people have been brain washed to wait for the gold. That is unfortunate because gold doesn't just come to you. Besides there are many groups, links, books, and sites to help you upscale, what you should say is you don't have the source. Let's be honest half the people who brag about making it big aren't, they just want to sell their book or course. But that is their own business.

Your anger, I get. You have tried to upscale and it isn't working as fast as you would like. But again, calling those who don't want to start small greedy is wrong cause everyone has their own destiny. I think I have overemphasized my point and if you don't get it then really nothing can change that. But anyway you are right those who have gotten a glimpse of the way should share it. I will do just that, actually I will do even better. I will create a WhatsApp group strictly to give free tips on getting better jobs. I am not sure how many people I can help but it just might favour someone.

And I would just like to end on a friendly note. Don't get angry at people who don't share their secrets, it wasn't easy to come by. Many people are not also very genuine if you help them scale up, we also have the issue of scams and more. You have got to protect your money ground. Also because someone has succeeded in one end and is flaunting it, doesn't mean they have everything. I can bet there is something you have that I want badly but can't get. In one way or the other we all have things that make us feel worthless. But if we all act on that and call everyone greedy or selfish, or some other term then we will have more mental health issues than we already do in Nigeria. Be grateful for what you have, work your way to what you want, and never undervalue yourself.

For one you know that title is simply click bait, and after receiving a work that I wouldn't sell for 1naira from a guy who feels it should worth nothing less than 5naira, I was greatly angered!

I feel shortchanged that some people who aren't halfway up to my skill level are seeking higher while those that knows how to aim higher are hiding the knowledge then come around to do what I regard as “mocking”.

There's no need telling a man who's down that he is down, he knows that already! Maybe try telling him how to get up

You are right, but I think at this stage in your life as a Nigerian, you should know that people generally just misbehave. I don't get moved anymore when someone claim to be making millions. It's their luck not mine. If I tell you how many roads I have taken to make legit money, you will shock. But leave that one aside. Life isn't equal and yes, many people below you will earn more than you. It happens, I still work as a third party writer with clients who will not for the life of them open the work to check. Their own is just to submit the work and they are thriving. Like I am sure of three of my clients who can not write even if their life depends on it but they are working for big companies.

My own is just to make my money, I don't care about them and their earning, hence my point of never settle for underneath your worth. You think you are pissed, what would you say about me who introduced someone to writing and she made her first 600k in bulk, me I never see 600k bulk before. I am happy for her and moving my own ground. But all this is simply me saying, there is no point feeling bad about not thriving as fast as others, I'm okay with my own clock as long as I can pay for Netflix and watch Korean series and maybe by small chops tray. Everything else is just jara.

Buzz me if you like. Maybe I can be of some help to you.

I will reply you in succession to your reply. True it's a one in a million chance of making it big immediately, but as I said, everyone's destiny is different. You instantly calling anyone who doesn't want to earn 1 naira per word at the start, greedy, is wrong. Everyone's ambition and motivation varies.

Next you are right, Not every pocket is the same and of course there are small rate payers, no doubt. However not all writers are the same, and even the newbies are not the same. I have met first time writers who are 10 times better than so called writers with years of experience. You must understand that skill matters and if you believe you have the skill, you can sell it for as high as you deem fit. And not be tagged greedy. *That is why there are tailors who have been sewing for decades who cannot stand the skill of a newbie who just learnt to pick up a scissors*. My point is skill, skill makes you worth anything you demand. Skill is what people want. Years does not guarantee skill, it only guarantees experience.

I am not making it hard for anyone to make their mark. And my write up will not change the fact that there are writers who will take .50 naira per word. I only replied you because you decided to tag every writer who doesn't want to start small greedy. I want to correct that notion. Knowing your skill and time and refusing to be underpaid is not greed, it's knowing your worth. How far that worth takes you, is not the business of anyone. Make your honest niche with writers who are okay with starting small, but don't make those who don't want to, feel bad about their choices. Everyone is different and every destiny is different. Know this and know peace.

No I beg to disagree, experience plays a heavy role in skill level. Why do you see some jobs asking for ridiculous amount of job experience? You can never compare the knowledge gathered from working directly in a field with that of learning about the field

I reasoned like you too until I compared my work skill 1year apart without taking any intentional improvement measures, I was only repeating a singular act that sharpened my skillset without me trying

In fact it was so outstanding a client who had stopped working with me because they felt I wasn't up to skill, rehired me and increased my rate. Why do you think internships exists?

Sure I would totally accept some help but that's the thing, we cannot keep withholding in fear of what could happen if you tried! This is a new era and we have to be our brother's keeper if this country is ever going to move an inch forward.

I can't tell you how long I've been writing for but no one gives you a helpful lead, they just keep talking about the promise land where your income matches or even supersedes your input, but no one in my 7years on Nairaland have shared a single tip to help those without the platter of opportunity like themselves.

They keep pointing towards the air, at least if you find a way, try show another person! You won't know the impact you are making up til 50years time and you look back and see no one “suffering and smiling” cos they have no other option

With all this yapping about paying peanuts and whatnot...the latest trend on Nairaland is you guys who hire writers failing to pay up after a successful delivery of the articles. You writers' hirers are becoming criminals also.

Hey, you can connect to the whatsapp group here. https:///LaPr4tW3dk5G0P9lQNH0KN. It will be more like a podcast, cause I find it easier to talk than to text. Anyway. It won't be a daily think but if there is any point or topic you want me to cover and I have the answer I will do my best to cover them. I will also try to give my tips as I remember them. So its open to anyone who would like to join. I will be officially starting the group by Friday with a tip on Upwork jobs. I guess that is the biggest site for people.

Actually have written 12,000 words in one day, original content, not one word rewritten. And consistently, I do about 8k words per day. It's about working smart actually. As for quality, it's for an American company and audience. I rarely get my pieces sent back for any serious issues. On those rare occasions, it's mostly due to creative differences, and 80 percent of the time, I explain my point of view and the client retracts the complaint.

PS: I need fictional writers for kid stories at 8000 words per story. Will pay between N3 (24,000) and N5 (40,000) per story of 8k. Send a pm if interested.

Dvea:

Just one thing to say to you, anyone who expects a good writer to complete 5k words daily, knows nothing about good content. That's why people are seeking foreign jobs, cause no foreigner in their right minds will expect you to writer 5k words a day. 5K words daily equals bad writing, take it or leave it. In my five years of writing and in all the collaborations and projects I have done, the worst I have ever expected anyone or anyone has ever expected me to write a day is 3k words and not for a whole month. Do you get that people need to eat, sleep, and do other personal tasks. This is not even speaking of research, writers block, flow, writing, editing, the horrible power supply, and any other contingency that may arise.

I take you side that you cannot expect to start making millions from the get go especially with little experience. But I also say, its about knowing the right channel. I have done jobs where clients say experience doesn't matter just diligence and a sound command of English. So no it is not ludacris for people to start earning 5 naira on their first job. My sister's first job paid 3 naira, I gave her the connection but I began with 300 naira per 1k words. By the way all these are Nigerian contacts. The point is, your opinion is yours, and I respect that, but do not call it greed. Call it ambition and hope. It's all about what your destiny sets for you. Oh and one more thing 1.3 is really small with the economy, come on. It's bad enough that people still get paid that, let's not justify it by calling them greedy. That is a poverty mentality.

5,000 words a day, consistently, for several days? undecided

If it was that easy, you should have done it yourself,

I understand that many Nairaland writers don't deliver the quality you might desire, but less than #2 per word isn't something to brag about,

And who's the greedy person here?

Some employers get as much as $20 per 300word article and only pay a measly #500 to the writer who actually writes it, after lots of reviews and other whatnots,

I think this post is long overdue and I’m fully prepared to counter y’all emotional reactions with pure facts.

I see lots of threads advising writers to not accept “peanuts” for their work. Some of this people go ahead to brag how they are paid 100s of thousands for their work, and unfortunately they mislead a lot of budding writers, ending their career even before they start.

Firstly, do y’all bother to ask how long those collecting that huge pay has been working for? All of this people have years and years of writing experience under their belt, so of course their work attracts better pay. And if you check well this people started off with 1naira or even less. I for one did!

I see some amateur writers who think writing articles is all about changing a few words in the post they outrightly copied from google just to beat the plagiarism checker

Lol! I really pity the impatient and greedy folks who wants to be paid 10naira per word from the start. My brother/sister, you go old!!

Everyone are being advised to seek international gigs, but are they easy to come by? Especially for people with zero experience. In fact, many of those claiming they are paid higher, do so to reduce the labor force so they can have all the rejected 1.5 gigs to themselves, lol.

I currently have one greedy folk on my hands who believes 1.3per word is too small to do a good job, lol! So how will I be encouraged to pay you 5naira per word?

Y’all don’t want to start from the grassroots and because of that, you can never succeed as a writer; at least not in Nigeria.

God forbid I pay a writer I’m unsure of their skill higher than 1.5naira, take it or leave it. Y’all want to make 1million naira per month, I would advise you to try yahuu or richtuals!

A 1.5naira gig can pay you 150k monthly if you can complete 5000words every day fr 20days. Please I ask, which job in Nigeria currently pays up to that amount for the entire month?

Y’all have been shortsighted by greed and its disgusting to say the least. Keep searching for that million-dollar job, while your mates make a sustainable income while gathering experience and making connections that inherently gets them a better pay.

I'll drop my pen here and as for you https://www.nairaland.com/hayatulimisticor
I'll be the last person you scam, I swear on that!

Interesting post indeed.
But I see a lot of people reacting emotionally and in the process, miss the important facts carefully presented here.

The way the facts are presented in this post may leave a lot to be desired but they are hard facts all the same.
If I understand the post clearly, a newbie has to learn the ropes by starting small or picking up gigs with small pay and in the process, gain enough experience that will get him gigs with higher pay. That makes sense to me.

The truth is that not everyone who claims to be a writer is good at the art. To get better, you need to hone your skills daily through the small gigs that come your way rather than get distracted by those who give you misleading information about writing.

For newbies, if anyone tells you it's impossible to write high quality content of 5000 words a day, it's a lie.
On a good day, I write more than that but it depends on certain factors such as:

- Do you have all day to write or do you have limited time each day to write? For me, the nature of my job offers me a lot of time to write.

- Are you passionate about what you write or you just write for the sake of it?
For me, I write only Christian content and it's something I'm passionate about so it follows naturally that I never run out of ideas.
Instead of stretching yourself thin by writing on several niches, why not focus your energy on one in which you never lack ideas to write about?

-Do you write and edit at the same time or do you finish your writing before editing?
I find that correcting my work as I write causes me to lose concentration. I write as fast as I can so I don't interrupt the flow of ideas and only make correction when I'm done writing.

- Do you get distracted by other activities or not. When I sit down to write, nothing takes my attention from it until I'm done.

One very important point most writers miss is that until you play in the big leagues, you can't make a living by writing.
As an aspiring or newbie writer, don't expect to make it big within a short time. Get a job that pays the bills but gives you time to write.
Write for passion and not for money untill the passion brings in the big bucks. That way, you won't be discourage if the big bucks don't come when you expect.

This is my humble submission. I hope it helps someone determine what's best for them.

Lmao, that guy and posting fake reviews of himself. He made a big mistake back in 2020 by threatening me because of 500N. Still, He keeps begging for work.

He's in the category of Mdnice and Co. Bad NL writers with a lot of mouth.

My contribution to this topic. This country is tough, I've gone out and seen what job seekers face. If you get an opportunity for a remote job that pays grab it.

Don't let one inspire to perspire make you reject a possible catapult. It's none of your business what happens after you drop an article, you agreed to the terms, get your pay and get the hell out.

No one will pay you 200000N without knowing how to make ×10 of it back. Its that way in all industries, writing inclusive.

Very well said! A word they say is enough for the wise.
