Zelensky’s 3 Big Miscalculations by greymiles: 4:34am On Mar 15, 2022
When Russia's invasion began president Zelensky was defiant he promised to defend every inch of Ukraine’s territory, now he's open to concessions, he's open to abandoning his quest for NATO membership. So what exactly changed in 19 days? in simple words, Zelesky got a taste of reality. He made three strategic miscalculations
number 1
He overestimated western support

number 2
he oversold ukraine's importance to the
west and

number three
he misread putin's real intentions

we'll take them one by one
zelensky knew that Ukraine was no match for russia, it was evident for everyone watching the situation. The army, the finances, everything was tagged against him but zelensky thought he had a trump card “the west” and he had good reason to think so. Joe Biden refused to guarantee Ukraine’s neutrality, he refused to pull back from nato's eastern flank, instead he expanded military assistance, he flooded ukraine
with lethal weapons. Clearly Biden was invested in the fight, the question was how invested?
listen to what Zelensky said on the 1st of September last year weeks before the russian build up began
“i feel that president biden will not only do, i feel i heard that he personally supports ukraine on the issue of granting nato membership but it's hard for me to tell what the path is going to be like” this was september 2021
in fact let's go back further to april 2021 that was
russia's first military buildup back then Zelensky seemed very confident of america's support
listen to what he said “president Biden assured
me that ukraine will never be left alone against russian aggression. ukraine will never be left alone”
April 2021, that was Biden’s promise so naturally zelensky hoped for big things he thought the military aid was just the start that more would come, more help but he was wrong... military aid was nato's maximum limit. they refused to go beyond that, no soldiers on the ground, no no-fly zones, nothing that would pit them against russia same with sanctions it's day 19 of the invasion and europe is still buying russian oil and gas, the fact is the west led ukraine on, they refused to compromise, they promised all the support but when the time came, nato stood back and watched!.

miscalculation number two
zelensky, overestimated ukraine's importance to
the west, it was evident in his words, he called Ukraine “the shield of europe”.
listen to this:
“Ukraine for eight years, Ukraine has been a shield for eight years, Ukraine has been holding back one of the greatest armies in the world which stands along our borders not the borders of the european union and the missile systems flew to Mariupol, not to european cities”. These events confirm that comprehensive security in europe is impossible if Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is not restored. again he was wrong. Ukraine was expendable for the west, they were not serious about the nato membership, they were not serious about the sanctions, for them Ukraine was just a useful tool. Something to irritate Vladimir Putin. that's all!
But that useful tool had an expiry date, it was February 24th when russia invaded and this has happened before. Think back to afghanistan in the 1980s, america funded the Mujahideen to fight the soviet army. Was it because afghanistan was strategically important for the west? No, it wasn't. The sole objective was to give the Soviets a bloody nose. Afghanistan was also a useful tool for the americans same with Georgia, america armed them in the late 2000s, they trained Georgian soldiers, they promised NATO membership in the future but when war broke out NATO recoiled. Zelensky made that very same mistake. He believed that ukraine was a key strategic asset for NATO, he was wrong. For nato, Ukraine was just another pawn!

miscalculation number three
Zelensky failed to read putin's mind. On this you cannot really blame him. Until the last moment, nobody thought there would be a war. There would be threats, some saber rattling perhaps but eventually russia would pull back. That was a conventional wisdom. Even as late as January 28 Zelensky did not buy the war hysteria.
this is what he said:
“the feeling from the media is that we have a war we have troops on the roads, we have mobilization, we do not need this panic. In hindsight should he have prepared better? Should he have considered Putin’s proposals more m seriously, perhaps he should but put yourself in Zelensky’s boots... You have the world's most powerful military alliance promising support, you have lethal weapons pouring in every day, you have promises of unprecedented sanctions on russia. It is not surprising that zelensky decided to fight. The West promised him sovereignty but they refused to fight for it and history will judge him for that.

All this twitter fanfare, all this youtube glory will disappear, what will remain is this... Ukraine is making the same compromises that Russia first demanded, in fact more than that. Russia was only demanding neutrality then, no joining the NATO that's what they wanted now they want Zelensky to recognize Donbas and Crimea. The difference is hundreds of innocent ukrainians are now dead!

My question for US and US fans is that, does US want to use Ukraine as a pawn to punish Russia for their numerous activities against US rule. especially for Russia interfering in US elections thereby turning Ukraine to another Afghanistan
Or
Does US want to profitize on this war
Or
Really want to help

You don't seem to understand anything, what do you expect USA to do?
Send it's foot soldiers there? NATO did not abandon him, they are trying to avoid a direct involvement because it will be breaking their code and ethics.
NATO is defensive treaty that binds its members to defend one another when attacked. Ukraine is not in NATO, so the organization cannot intercede directly.

I guess if your country was to attacked you will surrender as fast as possible so as not to get killed, you either die fighting or die a coward.
At least he fought for his nation unlike the Africans who sold their fellow brothers out for mirror and rest.
Close your eye in shame.

Nuclear weapons or not, Russia cannot face The US in combat! War is not fought and won the way it used to be fought in the past. It is won strategically.
While Russia may seem to be winning this war in Ukraine, they are losing back home. It's a no-win situation for them and the United States achieved this without firing a single weapon.
Obviously, Ukraine was used as a puppet to get to them. You see how Russians are always portrayed as the bad guys in movies, now it's obvious to the whole world.

Once the war is over , they will find a way out of the sections

Mac-donalds left Russian, now Russian billionaire buys it off from government cuz government seized 800 mac-donalds outlet in Russia

They removed mac_d
Now it's onalds they have reopend national wide

Now Russian will start producing most of the things that was sanctioned by them selves cuz they have the population.

The only issues is that USA is stopping China from helping Russian banks with a one payment solution
But Russia too has fallen back to crypto stable coins and are building a payment solution backed by crypto

Whether they build a payment system around crypto or not, the question is, who are they going to do business with? China? Syria? Belarus?

Support or no, he is an exemplary President. He took the oath of office to defend and stand by his country, and he's keeping his word. That concept is strange to an average African, so I understand where the OP is coming from.

”Support or no”
He’s an exemplary president...
Who did he make examples out of? His own citizens that he vowed to defend?
Who is now begging to stay neutral now? Is he tired of being and exemplary president?

They don’t want to break their code and ethics but they gave him a go ahead to threaten his own code and ethics which was clearly stated in the Minsk agreement.
Well, I don’t blame US, I blame the president that offered his country to be used as a war zone

One thing is for sure, even if Russia wins and maybe impose another president, America and the west will sponsor rebel groups to fight back just like they did in Afghanistan by training Osama bin laden and co.
And if Ukraine wins also, Russia will also sponsor separatist groups in return
And the Ukraine May never be the same again and who is to thank for that? Mr Zelensky who offered is land so that the west and East can test who strong pass

By standing by the Minsk agreement which stated that Ukraine stays neutral would have saved thousands of Ukrainians life
But someone choose to prove stubborn and now he’s in a bunker begging for the terms he once touted
Switzerland that choose neutrality doesn’t means Swiss are weak and look at how progressive the country is
There’s no greater peace than minding your own problem

Sanctions doesn't stop them from doing business with China cuz China haven't sanctioned them yet

America only wants China not to give there banks to Russians to surpoort them

Not to stop selling to Russians

Now the new deal is china moving into Russian to own banks ....

So you see they will still survive

The only way to stop Russia is when you stop buying their gas and oil them Russia is gone but EU can't cuz they are breathing Russian gas and oil like air

France major oil company are still in Russia even till now

Russia supplies every energy you see is almost half of the EU country

Iran has been under sanctions but they keep making money to run there country and sending two military rockets into space even when under sanctions...

Isreal never condemn Russia cuz most Russian are Jews by birth even Roman abramovich and Putin's ex wife ....

Not necessarily who they will do business with, it’s about opening the eyes of everyone that the world doesn’t evolve around US alone... now alternatives are springing up, UAE and Saudi are declining calls from the mighty US, Pakistani president is blasting America with confidence, America is running to Venezuela for oil,... lots like that

And you think it's a good thing that the Chinese move in anywhere to own a major stake in a country's financial sector? Ask Romanians, Hungarian and even In Nigeria here how that is working out for them, the Chinese are the new world slave masters. I don't see the situation being different if they lay in bed with the Russians.

Already, thousands of Russians have lost their source of income due to the mass exit of European and US companies, let's not be blind to the fact that apart from a large Landmass and oil which is controlled by the oligarchs, Russians don't have any tangible to boast of. How are their citizens going to benefit and progress if they are sold out to the Chinese?

You can't even compare the sanctions on Iran Vs the sanctions on Russia. If only the UK and US place sanctions on you, there is a big chance for survival, but 80% of Europe which are your neighbors sanctions you and you place your hope on the Chinese? It's a pitiable situation.

If you'd rather do business with an American, not with the Chinese or Russians, then why do you condemn America so badly?

Double standards
You can’t force your standards on everyone
Cuz I prefer them doesn’t mean everyone “Must”

China are the third world countries that has nothing to offer but Russia has a lot to offer China in a thread deal.

Secondly you saying apart from land mass and oil Russia has nothing , remember, after usa, Russia is the largest producer of arms in the world e.g AK 47 and other war ammunitions

What does Saudi Arabia has if not only oil ?

Russia power plants powers the whole of Germany and Germany can’t cut the deal with Russians now or they will be crippled

Only Russia and USA gives the whole world internet connectivity in the space station which American doesn’t want to sanction them too in that aspect .

You may argue Elon musk spaceX is there but he is just a private individual and you can’t give him such monopoly that’s why NASA preferred dealing with Russian in the space station than dealing with Elon musk

People are stranded in space cuz Russian rocket doesn’t want to carry Americans back to earth ...

NASA is exempting them selves from this sanctions cuz they know what Russian means to the world in space station

Sanctions will come hard on Russia but they will find a way around it once the war is over

Comradewhy:

Was NATO playing defensive role in Libya? If they can break the code and ethics in Libya. Why can't they do the same in Ukraine? They follow the rules when it favours them and violate it when it does not favour them. Double standard!!!!!

To the rest of the world, the West is no longer a safe heaven for your foreign reserve. If they can freeze Russia foreign reserve. They can freeze any other country's foreign reserve.

Non-Western countries will have no choice than to review their dependency on the West.
