Tinubu berates presidential aspirants over defections, sells bid at National Assembly
Leke Baiyewu
17 March 2022

A former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said he is the most qualified aspirant to become the next President of Nigeria.

Tinubu also took a swipe at other presidential aspirants on the platform of the APC, who he said, have at one time or the other defected from one political party to the other, while he has remained consistent in rebuilding the parties he belonged.

Tinubu met with members of the APC caucuses in the Senate and the House of Representatives at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Wednesday.

Tinubu said, “I have discussed this aspect; my lifelong ambition with Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari, that after the end of his term, I want to step in his shoe and not step on his toes.

“He joyfully and enthusiastically responded to me and said, ‘Well, come out, let’s see you run and we will see how best you can promote your democratic credentials.’ I love that.

“I love the opportunity today to come and consult with you: if you want to call it consultation or any other name because of the Electoral Act and INEC.”

Tinubu also noted that he has been consistent in his political careers.

He said, “I am not here to be defensive; I am here with humility to say that I am one of the best products that you can sell. No other one in the race, hiding or open. I am the only one in the race, hiding or open, that is most competent, most qualified to be your President, come Year 2023.

“First of all, I am the only one who has been through the tutelage, the turns and bends of the National Assembly. Where is that other person? None! I am the only one among them who has been consistently in one party to the other, building bridges. They are full of divorcees; they are not stable; some of them are rolling stones.
“I have been through the National Assembly. I have been in the corporate world with a background in public sector accounts, finance and development. Where will they start from?”

Recalling his performance as Lagos State governor, the APC leader noted that he “inherited one of the first bad-managed states of this country,” which was then referred to as the third dirtiest and messed up city in Africa.

“I can look back now today; I am proud standing before you representing that state which is now a mega city with national budgets higher than triple (some) countries of West Africa,” he said.

Majority Leader of the House, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, who is the leader of the APC caucus, told the lawmakers that it was time for them to repay Tinubu for the benefits they had enjoyed from him politically.

Ado-Doguwa then moved the motion for Tinubu’s endorsement for President and it was unanimously adopted by members of the caucus.

Earlier in his welcome address, Gbajabiamila described the visit and the meeting as an “epic moment.” This is just as the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, noted that it was the first time that Tinubu or a presidential aspirant would be meeting with lawmakers since he joined the National Assembly in 2007.

Tinubu, in response to some issues raised by Wase concerning the crisis in the APC, said the ruling party is “doing well.”

Meanwhile, some members of the House in opposition parties were sighted at the meeting. They include Lynda Ikpeazu (Anambra State) of the Peoples Democratic Party and Leke Abejide (Kogi State) of the African Democratic Congress.

I like the fact that Tinubu is running solely on his Democratic credentials and his achievements while in office. No insults, no tribalism, no hatred. Just records of past achievements from solid corporate sector background to legislative experience, pro-democracy struggle and an enviable performance as governor of Lagos state. This is how it ought to be.

The others should come out and tell us what they turned their respective states to when they were governors or whatever. Tinubu has raised the bar and we must not lower it. Atiku, Peter Obi Pandora, Saraki etc should all come out and tell us what they’ve achieved in previous public and private sector positions.

Pettiness

You are the one who is petty and infantile fo boot. Obama, while running to be President, stated that "those who have no record to run on will want to make the other guy appear someone to run away from".

That is what you and others, like you, do. Tinubu is classily selling his own record of being steadfast, principled, a bridge-builder, a patient leader who abides with what he begins.

Most importantly, Tinubu makes it obvious he is someone who stay the course and true to what he believes in unlike others (like Umahi, Kalu, Atiku, Tambuwal, Saraki, Obi etal) who run around like charlatan ready to sell out cheaply for personal gains.

Atiku is the worst. Multiple Parties in his career and a permanent sojourner to Dubai, in non-election years, who abandons Nigerians to their fate when not demanding the Presidency.

His approach is "I am born to rule" rather than being a humble leader who understands he needs to convince Nigerians of his credentials to rule them.

Atiku automatically became the leader of the PDP, the Nigerian opposition Party, as their last Presidential candidate in 2019.

Yet after his loss he 'retired' to Dubai not cognisant of his responsibility to lead the PDP vibrantly, day in and day out, as the head of the opposition Party thay claims is ready to take charge of the centre.

What can such a fundamentally unprincipled man offer Nigerians for Igbos like you to be following him so passionately while hankering for the blood of the far more principled and ideologically sound BAT??

Tinubu also highlights his stunning transformation of Lagos no one can dispute. Can Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal, Kalu, Umahi or Obi sell themselves similarly? Mba. Not possible. A stone cannot give you water.

Exactly what I said above also. If you have a superior and. verifiable record to run on, then why would you need to run inferior opposition candidates down?

We leave that pettiness to those who have no record to support their candidacy for the office they are running for.

Atiku is the worst. PDP then ACN, then APC and now back to PDP. No guarantee he won't run to APGA or SDP after 2023.

Can Nigerians imagine someone running to be our President yet cannot commit to anything enduringly and steadfastly?

Indeed. With his political peers, Tinubu is unassailablly ahead. The whole crisis in the APC is because of what is written below that Buhari and his camp refuse to accept and are trying hard to circumvent.

They know APC primaries will be a walkover for Tinubu. A man most voting delegates cannot be bribed or intimidated to reject.

It speaks volume of Tinubu's character that after a 30 year political career in Nigeria, where politics is brutal and unforgiving, BAT remains wildly popular and passionately supported.

Majority Leader of the House, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, who is the leader of the APC caucus, told the lawmakers that it was time for them to repay Tinubu for the benefits they had enjoyed from him politically.

In a multi ethnic country like nigeria, for what actually is the turn of another southern tribe about the size of the yorubas, your people are celebrating and praising what appears to be a Grand act of tribal supremacism, tribal bigotism. Killing any chance this nation has at breeding citizens that are truly nationalistic or patriotic. Allowing these selfish and greedy politicians to set yoruba people up for legitimate generational hatred by other southern nigerian tribes while yet again doubling down on the already known belief that this country is more or less a jungle where nothing counts or matters.

We already know that having a Yoruba president does not and will not change the life of the average yoruba man, rather his friends and immediate family only enrich themselves. However we all as nigerians lose when we miss an opportunity to bring us together, an opportunity at nation building, at making steps towards true nationalism and having citizens that truly feel that they matter and we are going somewhere.

I hope learned and high IQ yorubas start speaking out now, silence is culpability. Truly no one nigerian tribe is better than the other. We are all fxcked within these walls. We have to be making steps towards the right direction, dont let these greedy politicians fool you by invoking tribal sentiments, we all know they honestly dont care about tribe, they are only after their selfish interest.

Atleast the hausas were honest and good enough to rotate the presidency down south. Nothing good can come off taking or bullying yourself off another tribes turn.

Modified Response:
To those quoting me and talking about mistakes of certain tribes of the past as a reason why we should respond with more mistakes please understand this: I am not from the South East and I am speaking as a Nigerian> And I want to tell you that the future of Nigerians and our well being is greater than any single person's Emotional Judgement or Ambition.

Life itself is supposed to be about positive Evolution, why should we allow a mistake to happen now simply because a similar mistake happened in the past. Where is the positive growth in that?

This country is supposed to be a working progress of a coalition of African tribes to build something that someday we can proud of. We may not have chosen to all be in this box but the reality is that we are, and we have gotten used to surviving on each others trust and co-operation. The way forward is not allowing selfish politicians to set us up to making a Fundamental mistake and setting us a generation backwards on this our Nigerian Project.

Regardless of what you have convinced yourself to belief, the average Nigerian Yoruba or not needs the support of every other nigerian tribe to thrive either as an employer or an employee. For almost 8years I have had a northerner as an investor in my company and also as my gateman - my life would change for the worse if either of them chooses to leave. Thanks to Nairaland and APC, bigots have become emboldened in this country in the last 10years. If APC believes they did not get enough support from the south East, sidelining the region as a response is the dumbest reaction, because the south east is part of nigeria. How can you then claim to be a national party if they are ok with sideling a region.

If you are not planning on running away from this country in the nearest future, if you want your children and grandchildren to not go through the same amount of poverty and suffering as our parents and this generation is going through then you have a civic duty to stand up now and speak your truth. We may not be able to control the stealing of every public official but something as basic as equity and fairness we should not be toying with so we can continue to hope and dream about the destination we want this country to get to and everyone watching from the outside can see that we are serious about becoming a great nation.

Abeg shut up. We should swing behind people who wish to reap where they have not sown?

Nigerians should blindly support the most unprincipled and hateful Nigerians who have shown time and time again, they hate the "Zoo" and remain ready to undermine her?

Or APC should give her ticket to a people who have given the Party only enmity, hate and rabid insults?

What some of you Igbos will never understand is that (1) respect is reciprocal and (2) hate begets hates. You don't respect other Nigerians but you demand respect from them. You hate other Nigwrians but demand they must love you.

You dishonor other Nigerians always yet insist they must honor you.

For your arguments to be valid, i.e Igbos deserve the Presidency, then you people will also have had to do your part by behaving in a way that will endear you to many and make them passionately supportive of your ambition and resistive of any attempt to deny you equity.

That you cannot see Igbo culpability in your current woes just shows Igbos remain a long way from being ready to earn the trust and support of other Nigerians.

Is it just to shout "na our turn" while your everyday conduct make other Nigerians really afraid to contemplate being led by an Igbo let alone support that ambition?

Lolz. I always remind people about the 1993 Presidential elections and the way Dr. Alex Ekueme (a man I respect immensely) contested against Obasanjo in the primaries despite other southerners agreeing to compensate the west for Abiola's ordeal. The wise can deduce what I mean.

I admire your writing skills man. I may disagree but I am not an idiot not to give thumbs up when it is due. Cheers!

Buhari's problem is not really age. It is about competence in economic matters and the managerial clout to surround yourself with the very best devoid of ethnic bigotry or nepotism.

Tinubu has proven to be above that in Lagos and it is a pity that the tribe he has embraced most in Lagos hate him the most. Life no balance!

You are very naive of the point you want to proof.
The last time a Northerner was in power, 2007_2010, the late president Umar Musa Yar Adua is from Kastina state while the present president, President Muhammad Buhari 2015- Till date is also from Kastina.
Are you aware north central and north east haven't tasted presidency since forth republic?
They maintain political maturity and forge ahead to achieve their goals in the nearest future by building bridges and others.
Unlike out south east neighbour who always play the victim card, with the mentality that's it's there turn without the necessary strategists other than blackmailing Yoruba and Asiwaju.
I wonder if power is given based on such principles.
Meanwhile, justify the above case study and explain how the hausas are honest while Yorubas are not.
