Accra remind of Kampala. Seems everywhere is just informal business in-front of formal business. Must be tough being a formal business with kiosks, street vendors and hawkers - paying zero rent and blocking your business - and outcompeting you. popizaino: 2 Likes |

While the informal economy can provide a temporary, imperfect social safety net, benefits of formalization are clear advantages for informal businesses to move out of operating in the shadow economy. https://blogs.worldbank.org/psd/out-shadows-unlocking-economic-potential-informal-businesses/?cid=SHR_BlogSiteTweetable_EN_EXT via @worldbank Just40: 4 Likes |

rvp2018:You should use that to help Kenyans so they can get out of poverty like Ghanaians have gotten out, by expanding their businesses with MASLOC loans. Help your informal workers formalize their trade and get out of poverty like how Ghana has helped it traders .. 3 Likes |

Tortured arguments. In kenya informal business are slowly giving way to formal. Informal retail and wholesales -Kiosks - giving way to supermarkets and malls. Now Kenya is second to South Africa in formalizing retail sector - Naivas just opened their 85th supermarket. Informal transport - Matatus or Trotros in kenya have been formaized into Saccos. Every Matatu in kenya must belong to SACCO, driver and conductor must wear their badge, and their uniform. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW7HkMuTkCY We now have problem with Okadas/boda-bodas/motorcyles - that we need to tackle. Ultimately progressive countries should find a balance - Rwanda has gone to extreme of almost making informal business illegal - Ghana is total chaos with every little space invaded by street vendors. rvp2018:if that was happening... Your poverty levels wouldn't have increased.. Stop making useless excuses and actually solve your problems. One thing must affect another positively. Your poverty levels are increasing because more and more Kenyans are being driven out of competition by monopolies from India who employ very little and pay them peanuts Here, all transport operators are part of labour unions who advocate for their well being and make massive money. Unlike the mess that your matatus create in Kenya, here trotros are more organized. 3 Likes |

Informal sector can never create any real wealth - it's create floating middle class - that is one COVID away poverty. This is what is happening in Kenya and many countries now. Real wealth will start when we transition the economy from informal to formal - so incomes are more predictable. Why would owned operated transporter belong to labour union - who is their employer? Will they ask the commuters to raise their money or you mean the transport conductors/drivers? As always you made tortured arguments like a mad man. Just40: 2 Likes |

rvp2018:20 million dollars is huge money for petty traders who take it to expand their businesses. For medium scale businesses, they are being offered between 10,000 dollars to 2 million dollars to purchase machinery from a 20 billion dollars fund to expand their businesses for export. Can Kenya do same for it massive informal traders and reduces the chaos and mess, all over Kenya and also reduce the 40% extreme poverty ? |

rvp2018:Yes they can People create sustainable businesses out of it and build house and own cars out of it. That's is good wealth. Maybe l, when your govt starts helping Kenyans instead of Indian monopolies, you will finally seen Kenyans rising out of extreme poverty and finding homes instead of being homeless or having dreams to marry Europeans. 1 Like |

The same informal sector can be formalized. Formalized mean if it's hawking - they need to be registered - it's need to be orderly - probably organized into cooperatives - wearing uniforms - it need to respect the right of business owners - you dont just come and set up infront of someone else shop - who is paying taxes. They can also agree with shop owners on time to operate - maybe from 5 pm - when they close shop - they come and set up in the streets. This what happens in most developed cities - street vendors are allowed to operate in late hours and weekends - then they fold their stuff and disappear in the morning- and then 8-5pm - you let formal business generate taxes. Otherwise you gotta Ghana like situation with formal sector totally non-existent - and cities look like cattle kraals. Your have almost zero tax collection outside minerals like Nigeria - because formal sector pay taxes - the street hawkers cannot. Just40: 1 Like |

rvp2018:are they school children to be wearing uniforms? People who have their own businesses and their petty shops or kiosks are empowered with business loans to expand by acquiring more goods or acquiring bigger shops to expand their trade. This is how come, market women have become very rich to even enter into real estate and taking their kids to ivy league schools. It is also part of the reason why our poverty levels are low and our slum dwellers are very low. I want to see this kind of progress in Kenya. So that Kenyan girls don't keep dreaming of marry Europeans before they can get out of poverty. We have a good 16 billion dollars tax collection excluding minerals whose income goes into their own funds. Despite the fact that you guys almost have twice our population, your tax collection is below ours. |
