Germany seals gas deal with Qatar to reduce dependence on Russia

Germany has sought to reduce its energy dependence on Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine.

Germany and Qatar have reached a long-term energy partnership, a German official has said, as Europe’s biggest economy seeks to become less dependent on Russian energy sources.

Russia is the largest supplier of gas to Germany and German economy minister Robert Habeck has launched several initiatives to lessen Germany’s energy dependence on Russia since it invaded its neighbour Ukraine.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Habeck on Sunday and the two discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in the energy sector, the Emiri court said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the German economics ministry in Berlin confirmed on Sunday that a deal had been clinched.

“The companies that have come to Qatar with (Habeck) will now enter into contract negotiations with the Qatari side,” the spokesperson said.

In a statement, Qatar said that for years it had sought to supply Germany but discussions never led to concrete agreements.

Qatar said it agreed with Germany that “their respective commercial entities would re-engage and progress discussions on long term LNG supplies”.

Habeck also met Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi in Doha, where they discussed energy relations and cooperation between Qatar, one of the world’s top natural gas exporters, and Germany, and ways to enhance them, according to a statement from al-Kaabi.

In late February, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the construction of two new terminals for liquefied natural gas in response to what some critics said was Germany’s over-reliance on Russian gas. The terminals are to be located in Brunsbuttel and Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany put on hold the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project designed to bring Russian natural gas directly to Germany via the Baltic Sea.

Germany intends to phase out its nuclear power production by the end of this year, leaving observers questioning how Europe’s biggest economy will fulfill all of its energy needs.

The way Russian economy will crumble in the nearest future will put them at the top of the poorest countries. Except the sanctions are revoked.

Winning the war is not all about killings and bombings...

That may not always be the case. Infact, it can make them become very self sufficient in the long run because they have both the brains and the technology. It is not every country you can stiffen with sanctions. Other countries are watching... Everyone will soon start finding a way to wean their economy from the west. New alliances are coming

The West is the biggest trade partner of both China, India and Russia. You don’t understand the buying power of the West hence your narrative.
Russia losing Germany alone will highly impact its GDP now add Belgium, UK, Netherlands and Poland to the mix. Oil and gas accounts for 60% of Russian revenue from exports. Go figure.
China is wary of joining forces or providing logistical support to Russia for one reason, trade partnership with the West.

If Qatar and Germany are able to pull it off (considering the distance between them), have you asked yourself how much the price would skyrocket for Germany?

You people will just sit down in the corner of your house and be analysing . China is weary because of the west ? So you think they can just cut off the oil and gas like that without the west suffering massive inflation? Maybe you should go and see the protest in Spain yesterday about high inflation and cost of fuel. Two people died in Sri Lanka on the queue for fuel. The war is just one month and america is suffering the highest inflation in 30yrs. Just be watching CNN and be giving beer parlour analysis. China won't blink eye to take sides with Russia when it gets to the stage. Finally, even the small Iran that was sanctioned by USA is being cajoled to take back another deal for lifting the sanction. Stay there and be reading only BBC

Even a 10years old child knows that there will be temporal discomfort for a greater good. Did you see the approval ratings despite the increased gas prices? People are more than happy to pay more to Bleep off Russian gas. Who cares about Sri Lanka? Lol
Germany just signed a gas deal with Qatar, expect more to come in the following months but one thing is certain, the Ruble and Russian economy will finished.

What you fail to realise is that it is always the two sides of a coin. Same way India is planning to buy Russian oil. Same way Russians will suffer temporal discomforts for self sufficiency later. It happened in Japan after world war. Same with Germany. Both became leaders at the turn of the century for technological innovation. The approval rate is only high in the west. Most other countries are evenly divided about the war. Finally, once inflation sets in, protests and disapproval will eventually come from the west . It is always like that. They supported Vietnam at first, when it dragged.. they started protesting against it. Same with Korea war. Same reason Biden ran away from Afghanistan and gifted war machines to talibans. Wars are popular initially, people get tired in the long run. In the end, the world will move on.... rather than Russia, it is Ukraine that will suffer the most . They are not wise

You just deviated from the point he made and went off-point all through.

How would China not blink to take side with Russia?

The West and Russia, who is a more important trade partner to China?

Use your brain if you have one.

So why did china tell USA yesterday they are yet to send ammunitions to Russia but they are not ruling it out in the future? Just Google the comment of Chinese ambassador to USA yesterday. China has been conducting military exercise with Russia for decades. And why should China support the west? ...when they have the west stoking TAIWAN AGAINST THEM. The same thing that Russia is doing , China did it politically in Hong Kong. They changed the regime to someone that is more friendly to china. The west started banning Hong Kong, gave Hong Kong citizens free visa to UK, encouraged them to protest. This is less than two years ago. So you think China is dumb? Support the west so they can do same thing to them when they are done with Russia? Finally, Trump fought a trade war with china already. Australia, Canada is perpetually banning Chinese products, invoking trade barriers... you think because everyone is talking about Russia now, china has forgotten or what? China won't blink eye to support Russia. They have more to gain from supporting Russia than the west
