English might be our official language but it is not our native or indigenous language, this is why making mistakes is compulsory. But it is always good that when we notice some of our mistakes we tend to correct it so that it doesn't take place in the future. This is because when those people that originally own this language hear you say some of these things, they might think you are an uneducated person while you are. So to avoid this, it is best that you know the correct way some simples English words and phrases are used. So in this article, my main focus is on one phase which is commonly used in almost every part of the country and that is "I slept by 10pm". Most people think that this phase is right but it is completely wrong. For clarity, using "by" with time is not entirely wrong. It just doesn't have the same meaning as "at". "By" means "on or before"/"at or before". For example, the sentence "I will have slept off by 10PM" simply means I'd likely sleep off at 10PM or anytime before but not later than 10PM. Another good example is "be back by Monday". In this case, you can come back anytime before Monday or on Monday but not later. One thing to remember is that "by" is usually associated with the end of an activity, something that has ended or will have ended. "At", on the other hand, is used for a specific point in time. For example, "the bell rang at 12PM". 4 Likes |

Mandem111: There's nothing wrong with saying "I slept by 10pm" as long as we can define it. That's the Nigerian way of saying that same thing you're telling us. In the USA, they have so many of such phrases. Example:- Hey buddy = Hello my friend To hang tight = To wait patiently To ride shotgun = To ride in the front seat next to the driver The only reason you feel the Nigerian phrase is wrong is because we're slaves to the English language, and as such, we have been stopped from thinking out our thoughts organically. Indeed, that's what you're instituting here whether you understand it or not. But the purpose of language is to perpetually expand one's thought horizon without an elastic limit. Once this can't be done, once there's a ceiling to thought, once there's a preferred foreign alternative, once there's a foreign authority to defer to, we become intellectually enslaved and incapable of culturally inspired original thought. The grand result is that any time we want to know or do something for ourselves in Africa, we defer to foreign authority. This is the same thing foreign religions (Christianity and Islam) achieves in Africa but in a different way. And that's the WORST thing that could happen to a human being or a culture. My people perish for lack of knowledge..... 1 Like |
