“Helping” is what Westerners pretend to do. But we know what their game plan actually is. It’s far from helping.

Westerners donate inconsequential amounts to fund things like “democracy”, “human rights”, “women empowerment”, “education”, “health”, “wars” etc. Things which have little impact to development, and are not sustainable (ie they don’t make money) so they’ll help Westerners create the myth of perpetual Africa aid.

The real deal in terms of economic development is industrialization, and not human rights, democracy, women empowerment, etc. Little things like those take care of themselves once there’s industrialization and the money is flowing in.

The West needs to be careful that, in seeking to cajole countries into joining its coalition against Russia, it doesn’t end up stoking anti-western attitudes

Liz Truss was in India today, her second visit since becoming foreign secretary six months ago. That she was back so soon is testimony not just to the importance that the government attaches to relations with India but concern at Delhi’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As the world’s largest democracy, India might have been expected to condemn Moscow’s egregious breach of the United Nations charter. Its decision to abstain in UN votes on the invasion and remain neutral on the war has alarmed the West. The fact that Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, was also in Delhi today, following a visit last week by Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, has raised fears of an emerging anti-western coalition.

Such an alliance may be unlikely. Nonetheless, India’s reluctance to take sides should perhaps not have come as a surprise. The country is dependent on Russia for most of its defence procurement. There is also a long-standing anti-western tradition that stems from past western support for Pakistan. That hostility has coloured media coverage since the start of the war. At the same time, Delhi clearly sees opportunities arising from the conflict. Not just a chance to buy Russian oil at discounted prices. But an opportunity to resolve local conflicts, including its border dispute with China.

Nor is India alone in refusing to take sides. Much of the Middle East has remained neutral, including Saudi Arabia and, to the surprise of many, the United Arab Emirates, formerly considered a reliable western ally. In Brazil, President Bolsonaro has refused to condemn Vladimir Putin. South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has similarly echoed Russia’s official position that it perceived a national existential threat from Nato. And while 28 African countries voted at the UN to condemn Russia’s invasion, it is striking that 17 abstained and eight recorded no vote. Of the 28, none have elaborated on their position but some have criticised the West for double standards.

The West’s failure so far to convince a broader coalition to take a moral stand against Russia reflects multiple factors. Some countries have commercial and security links with Russia that they want to preserve. Others, notably in the Middle East, are reluctant to be drawn into what they perceive to be a European conflict at a time when so many regional conflicts, including Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Libya, remain unresolved. But there’s little question that as in India, anti-western sentiment is also a factor. That has made public opinion in many countries susceptible to Russian propaganda and disinformation.

This is a challenge for the West, not least because in a protracted conflict, the reluctance of many countries to take its side risks making it easier for Russia to evade sanctions. Yet the West also needs to be careful that in seeking to cajole countries to take sides in the conflict, it does not stoke the anti-western attitudes that have so far kept them on the sidelines. In an increasingly multipolar world in which countries believe they have more strategic options, how the West goes about its task is extremely important. Lecturing countries on their responsibilities risks backfiring.
