Amarathripple0:I believe you have a valid point and it is not a coincidence that someone from the fraud team checked your profile around the same time. What he/she did, in my opinion, is to misuse your personal data, which has grave consequencies for John Lewis if proven. Your linkedIn profile may be public but that person did not know you were on linkedIn except if you had either applied for a Job with them or he used your data he accessed while working with John Lewis. You can contact them via their social media channels or do a post on linkedIn stating what happened and your observation and tag the person and John lewis. They will respond. 4 Likes |

Amarathripple0: Wow!!! No F way they did that! You definitely have a case for a complaint. I am actually seething reading this, makes me feel sick. You definitely need to take this further, I hope you have screenshot that name of the staff member that actually did that check on you. Once you use your Debit card that’s should have been the end of it, unless it’s your bank that didn’t allow the transaction to filter through. Goodluck mate but this is what we Africans go through here. It’s definitely not normal. 1 Like |

dustydee:Yes it is misuse of data because I have no record of me giving them my LinkedIn profile as I’ve never applied for a job with them. I’ve done tests on GDPR at my job and this is a clear breach. I’ve been advised to file a formal complaint on record with them which I’ve done and then report them to the appropriate bodies or speak to a lawyer if they fail to take action. I would rather do the former and some social media posts as you have mentioned. Thanks |

Ray7878:I took screenshots of the name and sent it to them. My bank approved the payment and John Lewis put it on pending in my account for about 24 hours. I’m glad that you understand how messed up this is because when I spoke to my family here, they said the exact same thing. That I have a serious case with the company. Thank you so much for your empathy. |

hustla: You didn't read the part where it was stated that perhaps it may be possible that it is within the scope of a fraud prevention to carry out extended checks on the purported purchaser including their online presence. For instance, the fraud investigator might have been trying to verify whether the person whose card was being used was actually in the UK. A check of their LinkedIn profile would be one way of checking to see if that was indeed the case, despite the fact that a name and address has been given. It could have been an impersonation. The point is that all departments have operating guidelines, and it may well be within the operating guidelines of that unit that they can use such means to verify whether this was a real transaction, or a fraudulent use of someone's card details, etc. 4 Likes |

Amarathripple0: This is a good course of action as they have the right to either offer a service or not but at the same time going through your SM profile to me seems a bit off. Its just an overzealous staff. John Lewis will have a complaints section which you should ideally go to in the first place before consumer rights protection group. |

Amarathripple0: I am glad you did took a screenshot. This is definitely discrimination based on your name. They know it, obviously they would try and ignore it or wish this goes away. If I was you I would continue and write in again, ask for the steps they have taken to investigate your allegations, and honestly if they ignore you then either write to their ceo (Dame Sharon white) who is a black woman herself and detail what you went through. Honestly this would end up in the papers if this happened to me. Enough of this sort of discrimination against Africans who have African names. 1 Like |

But on a serious note, it's a bit off to be profiled before selling something to you when your bank has approved the transaction. |
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by phyl123: 3:21pm On Apr 06, 2022 |
Ray7878: Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but anyone has got the right to go through your social media account, if you don’t want this you make it private. Big companies go through the Facebook account of potential employees to see if there’s anything that might adversely affect their brand. Such as derogatory comments against women, race , sexuality, religion etc. |

enesty: Aberystwyth is a small town on the coast. It is known for its university and student population. In the summer it has lots of visitors on holiday. Any jobs will be menial in shops or to do with the visitors. Also, the priority for jobs will always go to local people who can speak Welsh. Hope you have some good plans not coming just to hussle! |

phyl123: Then they should explain why a staff of John Lewis is going through the profile of a customer whose account was debited, and then have their order cancelled. Whether they have the right to go through it or not isn’t really relevant to be honest. |

I have a friend that take hom up to 400 quids a week as a student. You can send me PM if you encounter any challenge. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

onecoder:If you register your name (which is data by the way) and details on a company’s website and sign up as a user, and a staff member pulls that name and inserts it on a third-party social media app to look you up and you can clearly see that they went through your profile, then you can claim that there has been a breach. Yes, your social media page is public, but that information was not theirs to use for what appears to be personal purposes. Unless LinkedIn is one of their "products" and you consented to them going through your personal page on their terms and conditions, then yea, all is good, but in this case, John Lewis used my data on a platform they shouldn’t have. I hope this explains it so people can stop assuming that because it’s a social media page and that it’s public, they have a right to access it because that’s just a lack of awareness. And by the way, under GDPR data protection, it state that information is considered personal data whenever an individual can be identified, directly or indirectly, “by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological" |
