Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are now everyday occurrences. Whether you’re a small non-profit or a huge multinational conglomerate, your online services—email, websites, anything that faces the internet—can be slowed or completely stopped by a DDoS attack. Moreover, DDoS attacks are sometimes used to distract your cybersecurity operations while other criminal activity, such as data theft or network infiltration, is underway.

If indeed Bet9ja was hacked as claimed, how were they able to get access to the landing page to inform their customers of being "a victim of a sophisticated cyber attack?

Something is definitely not right about this episode, Meanwhile, their website is still not accessible as at the time of this writing.

Maybe they wanted to tamper with customers winning tickets and blame the hackers.Or many customers have won money that will run them down and couldn't be able to pay the customers.

Anyone that even believed it in the first place is a f ool.
People should ask themselves what the hell Russian hackers would do with betnaija that even pays earnings in Naira.
The reason they used the phoney Russian hackers angle is because they know that will be difficult to prove otherwise.
If they had used a known foreign or Nigerian hacker, those could easily have come out to refute their claim.

They didn't say it was a Ddos

However this your observation surprised me too

Especially with them assuring customers that nothing happened to their funds that everything is ok

Even if their host server have been taken over, they should have updated server elsewhere

Maybe they will come up with a better explanation of what happened later

Op, since they are still the owner of the domain and can prove it. They can host another landing page and host it on another server than point the domain name to the IP address of that new server. When someone accesses the bet9ja domain, it will be redirected to that server. Btw, it could be a ransomware attack where everything have been encrypted by the hacker with a password until a fee is paid

It was actually a ransomware attack.

I believe an important database which host customers information has been encrypted by the hacker. Probably the web app authenticates customers when they login. And now the database is being encrypted.

I guess bet9ja do not want to restore from the last backup because there will be discrepancies on customers funds. Irrespective of how this is settled, it won't change the fact that when this is over some customers will complain that the amount they had in their account has changed.

Exactly, that's one of the possible scenerio.brst thing is for them to pay the ransom and improve on their cybersecurity. Other bet owners needs to improve on their security as well.. I have already removed ally card details from all these betting sites.forgot to remove the one of bet9ja.

If truly they are attacked as claimed, it's looking as if the damage is irredeemable. Also, if another new betting platform comes up within the coming weeks, then I'll go with your assertion because it might be a deliberate act from them

When things like this happen u tend to hear so many news bet9ja actually took down it's website when they notice the high odds and transfer of funds having issues 6.. odds will change to 12 odds and then when they win it's cause issues between workers and customers so many errors in the script and they suspected the it and decide to take down their server to trace the attacks so everything is fine bet9ja is mmm betting they are bigger than running away with customers money or funds

It's usually an indirect hack. Most sports betting organizations in Nigeria have technical partners abroad, a hack into the technical partner's systems result into a hack into the sports betting company's system as well.

They hack into a bank's system and move money; don't you think it's possible in this scenario too? Is it the management that handles the payouts when they move the bank's money?

What you have in your Bank account and Bet9ja account are virtual funds. I can move your money from both accounts if I get hold of your log in details and telephone number/email to obtain the final OTP.

One security feature Bet9ja has however put in place to forestall stealing of your funds is that I cannot move the money to my bank account if proper KYC has not been done and part of it is to have your Bet9ja account details tally with your Bank account details. So, Mr. Ben Smith cannot move money from his Bet9ja account to Mr. Don Morgan's bank account.

Bank money is in digits, as you're moving them is same as moving cash, but bet9ja money is not so. After moving it, someone in bet9ja must convert it to cash. Not anyone in another company like betking, but someone in another bank can easily convert money stolen from another bank to cash. Are you getting me?? Let's one is centralized the other is not. Only bet9ja can pay you your winnings from them.

OK, get it. That's why there are sometimes delay in authorizations.

Thought you could move directly from Bet9ja.

Is actually a loss for them if they shut down. Do you how much people loss in a day.

For me, I don't believe it. They just scammed their customers big time. That's all I can say.

We know how Nigeria works. Inside job. Even if they were hacked, na Dem still run their customers street.

That's how we roll in Nigeria.
