Your analogy here is completely wrong. Your wife is concerned because both of you have a sign an agreement to live together. Whatever any does affects the other.
Ukraine as an independent state like Russian like France has every right to join whatever union or organization she deems fit. The citizens of Ukraine or Russia should determine her destiny through a fair poll.
