As digital agency, our advise will be web design. Not adhering to this is reason many wanting to get into tech don't make. Web design is basically about building modern and responsive websites for businesses. Our reason are as follows :

1. Web design is a foundation and avenue to try several other areas in tech, you can hence decide based on your strength and interest. In a typical web design project, you will do such things as search engine optimization, that is, designing website so it's been discovered on search engine, this entails a lot, you can later decide if digital marketing is something you will specialize. Web design design also involves graphice design at some point, you tend decide if to go into full graphics design. Web design at some time also involve playing with lines of codes to achieve some things. You can decide if to go into web development and coding indept if you fancy it. As you can see, you are exposed to several aspect of tech to try your hands and strength on.

2. You don't get overwhelmed easily: Taking a deep dive into programming as most newbie most time make them discouraged. Some concepts are better understood over time and especially when confronted with such problem, when you see see the solution, you understand better.

3. Easy to learn: web design is click and drop, most of its core skills can be learned in no time.

4. Make money easily: website is something every business needs, very few business are online currently. Helping businesses get online will solve problems and fetch you money but not as compared to when you have an app that does a specific job. Once you have mastered your craft. You can get a business online in 24hours which is very unlikely to complete a web development project in a week on your own.

5. You can build websites on your own: unlike web development, you need a team to come up with good app that will fetch you money. As a beginner, you may not have this funds to hire collaborators.

Final note - start from web design, explore other options to decide which really fits you. You will find your next specialization easier to learn compared to when hearing concepts for the first and and you feel overwhelmed and probably quit

Both are industry worthy. Complimentary skills/service. When you learn any of them well, you can earn a fortune from em.

You need to also understand that, the main thing you should be considering is either to become a frontend developer or a backend. Because, a frontend web developer also fit run frontend for app vice versa. You get the gist?

My little cent; either one you decide to learn can change your life. Considering Web 3.0; Blockchain Technology is currently the drill.

I am a digital experience designer (anything product, designs and consumers) though. With heavy skills in frontend development.
