Russia will beef up security along its Western borders if Sweden and Finland join NATO and there would be no more talk of a nuclear-free Baltic, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia and former Russia President (2008-2012), Dmitry Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel on Thursday.

The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the North and Central European Plain.

Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917 and fought two wars against it during World War Two during which it lost some territory to Moscow.

Sweden has not fought a war for 200 years and post-war foreign policy has focused on supporting democracy internationally, multilateral dialogue and nuclear disarmament.
Simple as ABC you bring the enemy to my doorstep, you ll be the first to be taken out by my nukes .

Russia is a supper power just like U.S.. Can't U.S respect them by stopping this NATO expansion? What does US stand to gain if World war break out?There will be no winner in a war fought with nukes,why not avoid this with everything possible?

Fear of Russian aggression making these nations to join NATO. these smaller nations are hiding under NATO. I wonder they haven't done enough to build their militaries all these years.

Russia on the other hand is not doing anything to guarantee these nations of peaceful relationships.

We aren't waiting for WW3. We are waiting for Activision to make it's Call of Duty version of Russia/Ukraine war

If Sweden and Finland joins Nato, the security architecture of Northern Europe and by extension, the European continent will be gravely worsened. The relative peace these countries have enjoyed, especially Sweden with it's over two centuries neutrality that helped them evade Hitlers conquest in second wolrd war would be gone.

They will make themselves a target and an enemy of a country that they share land border with, and the first duck to be attacked if there is ever a conflict. With Nato, they will officially invite the US to manipulate their internal affairs, making them subservient to Washington and a member of the nato enemy bloc in Russia's eyes. Not a good idea.

Finland has a 1340km border with Russia, the longest of any eu member states, and it takes just two hours by train from Lahti, Finland to St Petersburg, Russia. For Sweden, the baltic island of Gotland is just so close to Russia that the idea of Nato stationing a carrier there is suicidal to Russia's security. The Nordix leaders should think this well.

US did not conquer Iraq in 4 days like you claimed, the war lasted over a month and it took several other months before their president was captured.
As at March 2003 during the Iraq invasion Iraq had nothing close to the 4th biggest army in terms of findings or personnel. It was in 1990 when Iraq increased their troops to over 900,000 thousand that the Iraq had the 4th largest army but as at the time of the invasion Iraq had least than 350,000 troops.
US wasn’t the only country that invaded Iraq though they lead the invasion Great Britain sent over 45,000 British soldiers, Poland and other countries sent troops.
Iraq didn’t have any military aid from any country like Ukraine is having now (over 2 billion dollars worth of military equipments have been sent to Ukraine so far, alongside intelligence) Iraq fought the US and all her Allies alone.

So when next you come public to compare the US led invasion of iraq with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine get your facts right. They’re very widely read people on Nairaland that are very knowledgeable.

Those smaller countries are d ones running to NATO for protection cos they are scared of Russia. Russia isn't helping matters by its constant threats to those smaller nations. Even if d US is instigating things, nothing stops Russia from trying to assure it's neighbors of peace

The war will escalate! The more Russia recovers its economy and continues its assault on Ukraine, the higher the chances of fighting directly with NATO (who doesn't seem to be afraid of a nuclear again as they keep supplying Ukraine with more advanced weapons). Russia will prevail, Putin must fall.

A week is too long.. More like in 3days .. The Russian army would have given up within the first 24hrs of war..

It is nukes that is saving Russian .. Without those nukes , Russian army is as good as the Nigerian Army

Bring Finland to NATO and make NATO countries increase their spending and for bases to be built in eastern Europe, even Germany with its defensive constitution has also increase its defence spending..

Russia's sabre rattling and nuclear threats have become tedious in recent times. If the NATO countries combine to use their arsenals on Russia,the outcomes would better be imagined.
Well,some have argued that the West expansion towards Russia is responsible for the present crisis. One can't blame the West.Russia too was planning to expand westwards with its pondering communist ideology. The 1962 Cuban Nuclear issue,for instance,when the USSR placed nukes,I think some 70 nautical miles of the US. The USSR clearly aroused the anger of the US by invading its sphere of influence.
In this case,things have changed a great deal. Finland and Sweden are independent states,just as Ukraine. Madman Putin cannot dictate their diplomatic or foreign policy for them. If they suddenly get a sense of fear- an existential one- from Russia,they've got the right to aspire to NATO membership.
* Russia should remember the US too has nuclear submarines in the Indian Ocean,covering Soviet cities.
