FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) — In the dusty California desert, U.S. Army trainers are already using lessons learned from Russia’s war against Ukraine as they prepare soldiers for future fights against a major adversary such as Russia or China. The role-players in this month’s exercise at the National Training Center speak Russian. The enemy force that controls the fictional town of Ujen is using a steady stream of social media posts to make false accusations against the American brigade preparing to attack. In the coming weeks, the planned training scenario for the next brigade coming in will focus on how to battle an enemy willing to destroy a city with rocket and missile fire in order to conquer it. If the images seem familiar, they are, playing out on televisions and websites worldwide right now as Russian forces pound Ukrainian cities with airstrikes, killing scores of civilians. The information war on social media has showcased impassioned nightly speeches by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as Russian efforts to accuse Ukraine’s forces of faking mass killings in towns such as Bucha — massacres that the West blames on Moscow’s troops. “I think right now the whole Army is really looking at what’s happening in Ukraine and trying to learn lessons,” said Army Secretary Christine Wormuth. Those lessons, she said, range from Russia’s equipment and logistics troubles to communications and use of the internet. “The Russia-Ukraine experience is a very powerful illustration for our Army of how important the information domain is going to be,” said Wormuth, who spent two days at the training center in the Mojave Desert watching an Army brigade wage war against the fictional “Denovian” forces. “We’ve been talking about that for about five years. But really seeing it and seeing the way Zelenskyy has been incredibly powerful. ... This is a world war that the actual world can see and watch in real time. ” At the center, the commander, Brig. Gen. Curt Taylor, and his staff have ripped pages out of the Russian playbook to ensure that U.S. soldiers are ready to fight and win against a sophisticated near-peer enemy. It’s a common tool. For example, his base and the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana both shifted to counterinsurgency training during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. And the military services have focused other training on how to fight in cold weather — mimicking conditions in Russia or North Korea. But these latest changes have happened quickly in the early months after Russia invaded Ukraine. About 4,500 soldiers from 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, are out in the vast desert training area at Fort Irwin, where they will spend two weeks fighting the NTC’s resident 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, which acts as the enemy military. Soldiers from the regiment — known as Blackhorse — are arrayed in and around Ujen, which also includes role-players acting as the locals. As the sun was rising earlier this past week, Army Col. Ian Palmer, the brigade commander, stood on Crash Hill, on the outskirts of the town, preparing his soldiers to launch an attack. Lines of tanks spread out in the distance. Heavy winds the night before hampered his progress, so the attack was a bit behind. He said the exercise is using more drones by the friendly and enemy forces, both for surveillance and attacks. So his forces are trying to use camouflage and tuck into the terrain to stay out of sight. “You know if you can be seen, you can be shot, where ever you are,” he said. Down in the makeshift town, the opposition forces are confident they can hold off Palmer’s brigade despite the size difference. The Denovians only have about 1,350 forces, but they are throwing everything they have at the brigade, from jamming and other electronic warfare to insurgency attacks and propaganda. The role-players have their phones ready to film and post quickly to social media. The Denovian forces want to portray the unit in the worst possible light, said Taylor, and constantly twist the narrative on social media so Palmer’s troops realize they are in a battle for the truth. That’s a challenge, he said, because “when I’ve got a bunch of casualties and I’m getting overrun on my left flank and my supply trains aren’t where they need to be and I can’t find the bulldozers, it’s hard to think about something that someone said about me on Twitter.” The training goal, said Taylor, is teaching the brigades that come in how to fuse all elements of their combat power into a coordinated assault. “Everyone can play an instrument, but it’s about making music — bringing it all together in a synchronized fashion. And what you saw today was the artillery was doing the artillery thing, the aviation was doing the aviation thing and the maneuver guys were doing the maneuver thing. But part of the delay in their assault on the town was they couldn’t synchronize those three,” he said. Again, they can look to Ukraine to see how Russia failed to do that in the early weeks of the war. U.S. leaders repeatedly noted that in Russia’s initial multipronged assault in Ukraine, commanders consistently failed to provide the airstrikes and support their ground troops needed to move into key cities such as Kyiv. That failure led to Russian troops bombing the cities from the outskirts, hitting hospitals, apartment buildings and other structures, and killing civilians. So when the next brigade arrives as the training center, Taylor said it will face an enemy on board with doing just that. “We will be very focused on how to fight against an adversary that is willing to destroy infrastructure because that’s how we think our adversaries will fight,” Taylor said. “We’ve got to be prepared for urban combat where we have an adversary that is indiscriminately firing artillery.” Wormuth, the Army secretary, said seeing the training also underscored other lessons the U.S. is taking from the war in Ukraine. “As we’re watching what’s happening to the Russians now, it’s informative for us to think about what is right, from a modernization standpoint,” she said, noting that some U.S. tanks are very heavy and the terrain in Europe is muddier, not like the hard-packed sand of the desert. The Army, she said, has to determine “what’s the right balance between the mobility of a tank, the survivability of a tank and the lethality of a tank? If you want to make it more mobile, you make it lighter, but that makes it less survivable. And so you have to decide where you’re going to take risks.” https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-us-army-training-54e76eba46f9bf79542dd3f872456e67 |

iHart:I'm telling you. There are some things I've learned in this war, which I think everyone should also take home. Long term threats can become a reality someday so, its pertinent that every nation prepares well ahead... e.g, boko haram insurgency as seen today. My inlaws fled Zaria early 80s for Lagos as a result of this islamist extremism. He said as far back as late 70s, they've been threatening to attack other places, including our military base and had been repelled a couple of times at Jaji. Nigerian government didn't prepare ahead, so unfortunate. There's a group called maitasins in borno who were also killing people with knife. They underestimated their activities, especially when same buhari was their governor. He couldn't do much to neutralise them. Now, they're disturbing Nigeria's peace. Nothing is sovereign anymore when it comes to war. Cameroon nearby, if she's got the guts can challenge and invade Nigeria anyday. Don't underestimate any country as you don't know how much they've prepared too. Communication in time of war is very important to troops. This is lacking in the Russian camp and it makes them more vulnerable to attacks 5 Likes 1 Share |

On USA and China or USA and France, or China and UK or USA and Germany...they both wouid fight a sophisticated war bro. They might not even leave their borders. Supersonic and High precision cruise missiles wouid be deployed such that, it wouldn't go off target. All targets would be aimed to street level without recording civilian casualties unlike seen in Ukraine today Whoever has the best anti missile attackers on their territories would win the war 1 Like |

Remember when the US troops retreated to the Kabul airport and the ISIS in Afghanistan carried out suicide bombing in the airport. Some US soldiers were killed. The US retaliated by mistakenly killed civilians. They thought they were ISIS members. Russia dey learn, when it comes to killing civilians. The US killed 300000 civilians in Iraq alone. 2 Likes |

Eriokanmi: This just shows you don’t understand warfare and your assumptions are based on information warfare in MSM. This is the biggest propaganda war in history and 80% of what is out there is pure propaganda. UK, France and Germany would get battered against this Ukrainian army. UK got embarrassed during the Falkland war by Argentina who didn’t even send its professional army - it mostly sent conscripts due to being wary of invasion by Chile. Yet it sank 4 of the Royal Navy’s best ships and the war lasted 2months on a tiny Island. Germany currently doesn’t even have a proper military. And France is just living off colonial glory. Admittedly, I did say Russia made 2 egregious mistakes: 1. It should have done more to prepare for information warfare and it left it too late. 2. It miscalculated from the beginning and thought Ukrainians would rather protect their country’s infrastructures than fight. And that’s understandable but Russian intelligence miscalculated how many hardened Nazis are in Ukrainian army and NATO’s influence in the country and their resolve to use the last Ukrainian as cannon fodder. I don’t think most of you are aware that Ukrainian fighting forces outnumber Russians by 3:1. Despite that Ukrainians are yet to make any offensive and that shows how superior the Russians are. US forces outnumber Afghan farmers by 5:1, yet they couldn’t win in that country. The Russians started with shock and awe to blitz Ukrainians and make them surrender to protect their cities - with VDV landing near Kyiv. And since that didn’t work - they have reverted to war of attrition and are doing exceedingly fine by methodologically smashing the Ukrainian to bits. Funnily enough, they’re not even fighting just Ukrainians - they’re also fighting NATO. Ukraine is littered with Special Forces from all NATO countries and their intelligence agencies including CIA and MI6. Also, this is the minimal civilian casualties you would get in a war of attrition. America killed more 10x more civilians in Libya than Russia has killed in Ukraine. America killed 20x more civilians in Fallujah in Iraq alone than Russia has killed thus far. America doesn’t care about civilian live - they kill everything moving. And precision bomb is a ruse - you can never get perfect coordinates with bombs. This is the biggest war since WW2 (Ukraine is the 2nd biggest country in Europe with the 2nd biggest military only 2nd to Russia in both cases). When you put it in that context - you’ll get a clearer picture. And Russia isn’t even fighting a full blown war with Ukraine - in a full blown war, it would have levelled Ukraine with its firepower. 11 Likes |

You don’t learn from other people’s wars by watching - you learn by fighting. Granted CIA and US Special Forces like Delta and SEALs are fighting in Ukraine. But that isn’t enough since infantry forces do most of the fighting during wars. The only country learning is Russia. Russian forces are making mistakes but they’re also learning on the fly and very fast whilst adapting their tactics. The Syrian war also helped them a great deal. America would get exposed if and when it decides a near-peer like Ukraine like it did in Vietnam or a peer with nuclear weapons 5 Likes |

AldrichAmes:If I remember well, we were comparing an apple with an apple in my precious post. Russia can't face Germany and not regret it, let alone face America. Did you know why America left Afghanistan, restored and supported taliban rule after their long stay to restore peace in that country? It's laughable when you misconstrued this move with defeat....really laughable. If the taliban led-govt falters in their promise of change, American forces will return. So far, they're behaving well. On the Ukrainian joint forces from NATO as you wrongly posited, NATO never sent a single soldier to fight in Ukraine, go and do your research again and i dont know where you're getting this false information from. How does supporting Ukraine with weapons by NATO equate sending military to Ukraine?NATO only sent troops to Eastern European Countries to secure their borders against Russian possible invasion, learning from Ukraine attack. Only a few countries have even agreed to support with weapon among nato countries so far. All those joining Ukraine to fight Russia were mercenaries( those independent and professional fighters who fight for a living and volunteers) Are you aware there are pro-russian Ukrainians and separatists too, who are joining forces with Russia to fight Ukraine? I wonder why you skipped this in your post. Their leader had even been captured by Ukraine as we speak, same way Russia captured a british mercenary( not a British force...there's a difference between the two) last week. So, you can't say all the formation of Russian fighers are only Russian army without the fusion or support of the separatists and Belarusian army. They're both using mercenaries to fight ( i mean Ukraine and Russia) . If all you said about Russian military might was the truth, why was putin advocating for fighters and volunteers from friendly nations? If what you're saying is correct about Russian army, why have they lost so much of their soldiers? This isn't propaganda but confirmed information by russians themselves, including their topmost generals who died in the ongoing offensive. Russia has been so much rated before this war by lots of people, including myself. So far with what I've seen, all I can say is, I'm so disappointed. They've lost much more heavy weapons and men ( as displayed openly in the media) than any other. The recent warship was a clear proof of their weakness, even though they refused to admit it was caused by Ukrainian missile. 1 Like |

Eriokanmi: You’re a funny guy who lacks rudimentary knowledge of military tactics, and warfare. Typical armchair guy spouting baseless propaganda. Germany in 2022 has no proper military and even Ukraine would run over Germany without breaking a sweat. Germany hasn’t done anything militarily since the end of WW2 when it was disarmed. Russia defeated Nazi Germany, the greatest military ever, alone. And it will destroy current Germany without breaking a sweat. Stop lying - America never supported Taliban after it invaded the country. It left a puppet pro-American president there with billions of dollars worth of weapons and the same government got overthrown within 24hrs hence America placed on embargo of Taliban. The US lost the Afghan war miserably and got chased out of there by farmers. There are NATO special forces and intelligence agencies all over Ukraine fighting. A lot of them have been killed and some of them have been captured. You think Boris Johnson would visit Kyiv without British forces on the ground? Mariupol is flowing with NATO forces and an American general was captured there. A lot of the captured would soon be shown after the war. I doubt Russia has lost more than 5k troops. But when you add the separatists - the number won’t be more than 7k. And most of the losses happened during the first 2wks when they stretched their line of defence despite not sending enough troops for a country as big as Ukraine. Most of those killed were killed in ambushes by special forces of Ukr and NATO countries. However, they have adjusted since then and aren’t taking any significant losses. Ukraine on the other hand has lost almost 30k troops - almost 5k In Mariupol alone and about 5k POWs. 80% of the kills during the war has been with artillery fire and 10% from air bombardment. Two areas where Russians are smashing Ukrainians to bits. All the other nonsense is propaganda trash. The US lost almost 60k troops (official US figures but real figures should be at least 3x that number) in Vietnam fighting militias despite using all chemical weapons in the world. Lost almost 30k troops in Iraq (official US figure but most US Iraq veteran claim the number should be 4x that official figure) fighting against farmers and militias. If it had been US vs Ukr with Russia helping Ukr with intelligence, endless weapons and special forces - they would’ve killed more than half of US troops. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Opolopoopolonio: Huge losses? NATO propaganda =/= Reality I’m yet to see 20 Russian soldiers killed at once throughout this war. But I have seen different piles of Ukrainian bodies in the hundreds in videos many times. Heck, I saw more videos of dead American soldiers during the Iraq war than I have seen of Russian soldiers during this war. And most of the dead Russians I’ve seen are the separatists and Russian military police - not Russian regular forces. Even Pentagon said Russia is yet to use more than 10% of its firepower (they stepped it up a few days ago by using one of their bombers). If they decide to use their real firepower - there will be no Ukraine by the end of the week. NATO is the biggest force in the world on paper but in actual combat - it’s yet to fight any country that can shoot back and yet to win a war since NATO is American war machine. So NATO knows its limits hence it’s scared of direct confrontations against Russia. And both Pentagon and NATO commanders have repeated this several times. In a nuclear war - Rus just need to drop EMP on all NATO countries and let its ICMBs go. It will also take nuclear hits but it’s more prepared for nuclear bombs than any country in the world. Almost all Rus houses have bunkers that can protect against nuclear Armageddon. LMAOOO at fighter jets. Ukraine had almost 150 fighter jets before the war. What happened to those is the fate of whatever jets NATO gives Ukr. 2 Likes |

Yet in the middle of it Russia have adjusted their objectives from removing Zelenskyy, de-militarizing Ukraine and de-nazifying the country to 'liberating' the Donbass region. Even the latest objective is taking forever to commence... They are still recovering from the nightmare of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Mariupol. If NATO were not helping Ukraine in the resistance, why did Russia have to wail hard in an official letter/memo to the US begging them to stop arming Ukraine as it is hindering peace talks Less than 2 weeks ago, Russia's foreign minister admitted that Russia has suffered huge losses in Ukraine. Pro-Putin looooonatics will never hear that one. What of the 8 generals and other top Russian officers - close to 20 of them that have lost their lives That one is propaganda too Have you observed that Russia has almost given up on ground battles with Ukraine Even taking out the brave Ukrainian forces still standing in Mariupol is such a nightmare for them that they are trying to use aerial power.
