My vertical yam farm.
1st pix- When I was mixing soil with manure.

2nd pix- When I was transplanting from the nursery.

This is just a practical of vertical yam farm in my compound as I have 2,200 heaps of yam at farm that I planted almost the same time with this. Those ones have not sprouted as they didn't enjoy watering as I water these at home.

Why is that you are using bag that is cement bag to grow yam in your compound?

Why this concept when there are ground or soil to grow it in the first instance in your compound?

The way I'm seeing it, the tubers may not likely be that big and secondly, If the tubers are not well covered with sand/ground during production, it will affects the quality of the yam. .
I'm seriously interested with the outcome.
Kudos.

I see this as a waste of time in planting seedlings, why not dig the soil?
Did you ever considered the bearing, expansion and yielding process? those cement bags might tear (burst) out and efforts will be a wasted one

Well, let's wait and see the outcome.

I planted mine last two weeks but I didn't mix the soil with manure. However, I added leaves as compost. I intend to add the manure and fertilizer later.
Thanks for this update.
Kudos!

You are planting yam in sack.. A whole yam that likes stretching itself.

And people are actually commenting 'nice one'.
Nawa o, no wonder I am seeing stunted growth.
Yam doesn't leaves with such short tendrils, it will shoot its stem to the highest height of the stake before it even consider leaves.

You may end up harvesting potato sized yam. You can still transplant them now before you end up wasting your time.
Like others have said, keep us updated whrn you harvest.

Nigerians !

You just had to bring negativity

Hello you and Raph82, I support PStacks’s point and it’s not about negativity.

@OP, while we are being innovative, let us try as much as possible to do what is safe (healthwise, etc.) and ethical. Cement is hazardous and the bags are plastic bags; growing yams in those bags means the crop will be exposed to various toxins, and by extension, the people who consume them (even you, the farmer, you are exposing yourself as you handle those bags). Cancers, lungs and kidney diseases and others are prevalent nowadays because of harmful practices that we indulge in, sometimes unintentionally. If we had a functioning standards and control agency, they would study methods like this and put out advisories so that people like you will be more informed. Kindly ask questions from scientific and medical experts and study research - I know there are people who are already engaged in methods like this and even others, but let us begin to educate ourselves please and do the right thing for our sake and for posterity since we do not have a functioning government.

Have you seen how leaves are preserved in the market or wonder how the market women keep selling fresh leaves for one whole week or how they ripen their fruits

If you have tried farming at least once , you would know all farmers avoid cement or anything related to it as it is detrimental to the soil itself

If we keep on complaining about everything then flies won’t be perching on the foods displayed in the market, note that every farmer wants to maximize yield at harvest, no farmer will allow cement close to their produce.

My brother, thank you for your concern and contribution, that bag does not look like it's not washed, we know how a bag of cement that's not washed will look like. Talking about planting in sack bags, I don't think it's having the kind of dangerous picture you painted when it comes to using it to plant. I understand we don't have quality control measures here, but they do in America, and they permit the use of sack bags for planting. All the vertical farming and soilless farming being practised in advanced countries, they use plastics in planting, plant roots extract the needed nutrients from the nutrient solution contained in a plastic, this one appears to be more dangerous to me than sack farming, yet it is certified safe. In sack farming, there is soil medium around the plant, the sack is not even touching the plant. At times when you are tilling the soil, you'll come across many buried nylons, polythene bags, plastics and so on, yet we plant in the ground and eat the crops that come out of it, Sack farming was approved by FAO itself, you can check it out.

On a second thought, I'm very sure before indulging in any business, one must be done a remarkable survey on what he's going into, I don't think anyone would carry out this method if someone somewhere have not tried it before...!!

If he plants on the ground, the land will be tilled, and the number of stands that little space will contain will not be worth the energy and time put into this. Sack farming has its advantages.
- No competition among plants for soil nutrients, water, light etc. Each plant has its own space to thrive.
- It is easier to control weed and carry out other management practices such as mulching, manure or fertilizer application and so on in sack farming than planting on bare ground
- There's no limitation to farming with this method, as it is possible to farm even in urban centers, on concrete floor space and so on. You can't till the concrete floor of your compound to plant yam, but with sack farming, you are good to go.
- With sack farming within your neighbourhood, there's no fear of attack either by herdsmen or bandits, at this time that everyone is scared to go out into the bush to farm, this is your best bet.

Same question actually occurred to me. Thanks for your very thorough clarifications. cheesy

To a large extent, it won't limit the size of the tuber, this has been experimented many times, and results have confirmed that. Though other factors may determine what the size of the tuber will be at harvest, such as;
- The size and quality of the planting seed
- The type of soil loaded into the sac bag (yam has it's preferable soil to thrive well, sandy-loam/ loamy soil is the best). The soil must be loose enough to give room for the tuber to enlarge and grow.
- Right nutrient needed for growth by the plant.

It's not vertical farming, there's difference between vertical farming and sac farming. We learn everyday, and no knowledge is a waste.
