What is freelancing and who is a freelancer? Freelancing means to work as an independent entity rather than be employed by someone else. A freelancer is a worker who is self-employed and makes money working with different clients. Most freelancers are remote workers so they are able to work with businesses from all over the world and this is what gives you leverage as a Nigerian freelancer. Okusfemxy: I made a profile on Fiverr and Upwork, but it’s almost 2 weeks now. I did not get any order. What are some suggestions? I analyzed more than 100 UpWork profiles and noticed that there are 5 common mistakes most of the freelancers make. Here are they: • Make sure your profile is 100% complete. If you don’t know where to start, your UpWork homepage will help you. On the right side of the page, you will see a percentage and guidance on what to add to your profile. • The most important thing you are ignoring is your profile picture. It’s the first impression the client gets from you • The next thing you need to work on, is the title and the description. Your title should be clear and only about one specialization. And the description should be to the point. Don’t write long introductory paragraphs. Speak about your experience and how you can help clients. Make sure you don’t have any grammar mistakes. While reviewing UpWork profiles, I noticed that lots of freelancers write a really long introduction or include motivational quotes. Some even have quite a different title that doesn’t match with the description. Be specific about what you do and how you represent it to the clients. • Make sure you have a good portfolio with eye-catching images. Your portfolio is important to the clients because they want to see if you have a previous experience similar to their project. • What you should be careful about is the Skills section. Go to your Profile Settings and make sure your Categories section is relevant to your profile title and the description. The clients are going to find you according to the skills you mention in your profile. Okusfemxy: How to scale up as a freelancer part 1 Today we are going to be talking about scaling your earings as a freelancer and if you are a freelancer who is earning Anything below $2000 per month then you'll want to pay close attention to what I am about to share with you. Let's begin When it comes to scaling there are two main ways to do this You either scale horizontally (increase the price of your product or service) Or vertically (sell more products or services on the back end) Both methods work superbly well for any business but as a freelancer one stands out and that should be your major route to scaling up. You see, as a freelancer, you run a service-based business, what this means is that you are selling your time to make money. So scaling vertically would work against you because there are only so many hours you can work in a day. And even if you decide to start an agency and outsource to other people You still will hit a cap because of client fulfillment on the backend. So while scaling vertically is super effective, for businesses like ours where we sell our time for money it isn't the route to go. This brings us to the main thing I want to talk about and start implementing immediately...... Scaling horizontally (simply by increasing your price) It's no surprise that there are freelancers who do exactly the same work but get paid a huge difference in money For example, Freelancer A writes a sales page for $500, and Freelancers B writes the exact same sales page for $3000 Most times Freelancer B gets to do less work, reviews and edits compared to freelancer A. While it takes freelancer A 6 jobs to make $3000 it takes B only one job. So if you are stuck in the Freelancer A position then what you want to do is to raise your prices. But oftentimes it's easier said than done. As someone who has taught thousands of freelancers to increase their price It usually boils down to GUTS (or how big your balls are) Sometimes there are a lot of things that precede price increase but if you are already good enough Then you just have to just raise your price. If you aren't u want to get good enough before you do this (most times people are good enough but imposter syndrome wouldn't let them be great) Remember you don’t have to be the best just good enough So here are some things you can do to increase your price Understand and be willing to lose a job because of the price When you mention your price sometimes you might meet resistance. You either stick to it or you bend over, whatever decision you make determines where you'll be for the next couple of weeks, months, or clients. Scaling as a freelancer is too big for me to cover in Just one write up, so let us talk more about this another time. And remember your future self and family are counting on you to be great.
