Proper hygiene is nonexistent in Nigerian prisons. I'm even surprised that worse hasn't happened over the years.

God bless you. You have proper info.
The physical buildings used as prisons in this country needs to be demolished and new cells rebuild. Cells should have ACs, proper mattresses and bunks. water and proper toilets.

About prison authorities conniving with DPO to arrest people. Thats not true. And Prison authorities don't have the power over the cases of inmates, its the court that delays their cases. Keeping them in custody for too long. Prisons owns only the responsibility of presenting them to court.

About Feeding, until the FG stops contracting the inmates feeding to a contractor first before they supply to prisons. The inmates will never be fed well. The contract money should go directly to the Prison its meant for directly. Because these contractors take about 70% of the feeding money away and handover 30 back to the system. These 70% is in billions of naira.

Who are these contractors? They are your Obi, your red cap chief, your Obas and Oloyes, Your Emirs and Sarkins, the wife of your senators, the party chairs, the Ministers wife, business people in the society etc

Its a cankerworm, if we like shout from today till tomorrow, Prison is their pot of soup. They won't do anything about it.

Dismissive replies show how heartless some of you are and that you did not read the article. 1: Criminals do not deserve to die from disease, that was not their sentence nor what the punishment should be. 2: The article clearly states that many inmates are imprisoned there on false charges so prison officials can loot the allocations, so many are completely innocent

No 1 is very correct.

No 2 is very wrong.

Everything bad is just in the Northern Nigeria . They might even have a new strain of ebola eating them up down there and won't know it . Cause the rich don't treat the poor like human beings . And the poor don't see themselves as worth being treated as human beings . The poor feel the only things good for them are Sharia law, mosques, begging and slavery...

Below is a reminde Ron how bad it really is in NORTHERN NIGERIA

Halcyon123:
There is something called 'Matan Kule' down here in the north which i suspect she is and some marriages down here in the north is something else. Once you marry him,you become more of a slave than a wife to him. When it comes to s**,all you hear is 'bude',nothing to prepare you and the man has taken all manners of sex enhancement that can last him for long.
As a matan Kule, you are not allowed to go anywhere, even the market sef. There always someone on standby to do that. Gaskiya, some marriages down here in the north is a perfect example of living in bondage, whatever he says or does is right and you dare not oppose.

Quite true and talking of inmates been poor fed is never a surprise to me because here in Katsina how much has a free fed talk more of a prison? Katsina is one of the poorest states I have visited in this country 50% of the population are beggers, Katsina has one of the highest number of almajiri in Nigeria infact they are born beggers

"“Officers In Charge (of prisons) deliberately keep inmates’ numbers high so they can claim more money for their feeding,” a prison source said asking not to be named as he has no permission to talk to journalists. “In connivance with Police DPOs, they arrest vulnerable people, go to court, and remand them in custodial centres.”" Directly from the article

Yes, high lockup equals to high remunerations. There is nothing secretful about it, anyone who has little knowledge about the Prison will understand this. Its very simple. But, prison does not arrest, and only admit suspect sent to their facilities by the court.

The bolded is not true. There is nothing like connivance with the police. The Police does her job. Arrest suspects and charges them to court as the constitution empowers her to. If the police brings anyone to court and the court finds such a person guilty of any crime, the judgemebt is passed and the person is sent to prison.

And its not the police alone that prosecute and brings suspects to prison, EFCC, NSCDC,DSS,Military, even NCC-copyrights commission, NAFDAC etc, did the Prison authorities connive with all these agencies too?

So, where is the connivance? Let's assume there is a connivance, the lawyer of the said innocent person could have proved the suspects innocence, the court would have dismissed the case (No case to answer) and there would have been no witness or evidence to pin such a person to a crime.

We don't have the best justice system in this country, yes. But the number of people in the category you are trying to point at is one out of a thousand and in such situation, court will quickly dismiss the case.

Also, all these security agencies have a cat and rat relationship, the somehow check and balances each other, criminal connivance is not as easy as you think it can be.
